Innovation, Circular Economy Practices And Organisational Settings: Empirical Evidence From Italy, Davide Antonioli, Claudia Ghisetti, Stefano Pareglio, Marco Quatrosi Feb 2022

Innovation, Circular Economy Practices And Organisational Settings: Empirical Evidence From Italy, Davide Antonioli, Claudia Ghisetti, Stefano Pareglio, Marco Quatrosi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper builds on the available knowledge on what drives firms’ production choices towards circular economy practices to shed new light on a so far quite neglected dimension: the role of organizational settings. Being the transition to a more circular economy systemic in nature, it draws not only on technological but also on organizational changes and new set-ups. Coherently, the paper investigates how certain organizational settings (such as practices of communication to employees on critical aspects of the life of the company, the implementation of new performance evaluation mechanisms and incentive-based payment methods and the implementation of changes in recruitment …

Race, Repair, And Youth Participatory Action Research In One Rural School, Carol Thompson, Felicia Crockett Feb 2022

Race, Repair, And Youth Participatory Action Research In One Rural School, Carol Thompson, Felicia Crockett

The Rural Educator

This qualitative study examines the progress of a rural New Jersey school in addressing longstanding racial conflict after implementing a Youth Participatory Action Research project two years prior. Here we take up the thread as students continued to develop activities meant to increase awareness of ongoing issues, and as adults used professional development time to model best practices in managing racialized interactions. Eight teachers and staff not originally involved and nine students who had been directly involved were interviewed and a student focus group conducted. All participants agreed that progress had been made though issues around curriculum and discipline remained. …

Adoption Of Eco And Circular Economy-Innovation In Italy: Exploring Different Firm Profiles, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Francesco Nicolli, Stefano Pareglio, Marco Quatrosi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Applying clustering techniques, this paper identifies homogeneous groups of enterprises within the heterogeneous landscape of the italian manufacturing tissue. The algorithm will be fed with data from a survey on a cross-section of SMEs in 2019. The set of questions span from economic and financial performances to innovation adoption (product, process, organization), to circular economy implementation and environmental protection. Clustering has been chosen to identify groups of firms with respect to multiple and diverse characteristics without any preexisting hypothesis on a possible relationship among the variables. Results will group profiles of enterprises considering the information on multi-dimensional aspects of a …

The Economic Returns Of Circular Economy Practices, Davide Antonioli, Claudia Ghisetti, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Francesco Nicolli

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Assessing the economic consequences of sustainable production choices aimed at reducing environmental negative externalities is crucial for policy making, in light of the increasing interest and awareness experienced in the recent EU policy packages (Circular Economy package; European Green Deal and Recovery Fund to support sustainable transition). This assessment is one of the goal of the current work, which tries to provide new empirical evidence on the economic returns of such choices, drawing on previous literature on the underlying determinants of greener production choices, which are stated to differ from standard technological innovations as they are subject to a knowledge …

Applying Evidence-Based Intervention (Ebi) Mapping To Identify The Components And Logic Of Colorectal Cancer Screening Interventions, Jacob Szeszulski, Derek W Craig, Timothy J Walker, Maya Foster, Patricia Dolan Mullen, Maria E Fernandez Feb 2022

Applying Evidence-Based Intervention (Ebi) Mapping To Identify The Components And Logic Of Colorectal Cancer Screening Interventions, Jacob Szeszulski, Derek W Craig, Timothy J Walker, Maya Foster, Patricia Dolan Mullen, Maria E Fernandez

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Implementation of evidence-based interventions (EBIs) can help to increase colorectal cancer screening (CRCS). Potential users of CRCS EBIs are often unclear about the specific features, logic, and core elements of existing EBIs, making it challenging to use or adapt them. We used EBI Mapping, a systematic process developed from Intervention Mapping that identifies an EBI's components and logic, to characterize existing CRCS EBIs from the National Cancer Institute's Evidence-Based Cancer Control Programs website. The resulting information can facilitate intervention adoption, adaptation, and/or implementation. Two trained coders independently coded intervention materials to describe intervention components and logic (n = 20). We …

Educational Leadership Preparation And Professional Roles: Are We Serving The Needs Of Leadership Roles Along The Leadership Continuum?, Daniel W. Eadens, Marjorie Ceballos

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

As the complexity of school and district contexts continue to evolve, there is a need to prepare leaders at various points along the leadership continuum. Through this survey research, we analyzed student perceptions of program effectiveness (N = 408) from 2013 to 2020 in one educational leadership program through the lens of student professional roles (e.g., teachers, instructional coaches, central office personnel). Results varied with instructional coaches demonstrating higher perceptions of effectiveness and central office personnel lower perceptions. Findings from this study could serve as the impetus for further research as educational leadership programs serve diverse educational leadership roles.

“Why Don’T You Hear Us?”: Interview Narratives Of Disabled Working Women In Private Small Business Firms In India, Deepanjana Varshney Feb 2022

“Why Don’T You Hear Us?”: Interview Narratives Of Disabled Working Women In Private Small Business Firms In India, Deepanjana Varshney

Journal of International Women's Studies

This research explores the perception of disabled working women in small organizations in India's private sector. A meticulous study of past research revealed a paucity of research for working women with disabilities (WWD), especially in small enterprises in the Indian context. There are misconceptions and barriers associated with women with disabilities across the world. Past research demonstrates negative attitudes and related stereotyping notions regarding disabled working women. In sum, they are considered weak, incapable, and dependent on others. There has been insufficient research on employee disability, but there is limited research on the feelings and experiences of disabled working women, …

Microfinance And The Role Of Accounting In Supporting Family-Resilience-Based Women’S Empowerment, Desi Adhariani Feb 2022

Microfinance And The Role Of Accounting In Supporting Family-Resilience-Based Women’S Empowerment, Desi Adhariani

The Qualitative Report

This action research aims to explore the issues of microfinance and women’s empowerment in urban Indonesia, and the role of accounting on the issues. Drawing on critical accounting theory, this study employs feminism and empowerment theory based on Foucault’s work to investigate the activities of female micro-entrepreneurs who are members of a Sharia cooperative. The study was conducted using an action research method for eight months with observation and interviews with 40 female micro-entrepreneurs. It is found that the lending scheme applied in the cooperative follows the principle of family resilience. In this context, the empowerment is not aimed at …

Holding Space For Voice: Using Powerful Questions And Appreciative Inquiry Conversations To Understand Values And Needs, Annie Bélanger, Preethi Gorecki Feb 2022

Holding Space For Voice: Using Powerful Questions And Appreciative Inquiry Conversations To Understand Values And Needs, Annie Bélanger, Preethi Gorecki

Presentations

Change management is often process-centered instead of people-centered. People are centered when we focus on what is good. Appreciative Inquiry’s strengths-based, positive approach to organizational change allows leaders and facilitators to re-center individuals’ voices.

Appreciative Inquiry helps people move toward a shared vision for the future by engaging others in considering what is good, what could be, what should be, and how to co-create the future. It can foster equitable processes that decenter whiteness and deficit-mindset. Powerful conversations connect thoughts and feelings, result in new ideas, develop new perspectives and understandings, and have an increased potential for action. Developing conversations …

A Quantitative Study Examining Intentional Teaching Of Social Emotional Skills, Christina Scrivner Huse Feb 2022

A Quantitative Study Examining Intentional Teaching Of Social Emotional Skills, Christina Scrivner Huse

Dissertations

In a world where children are likely to experience early-life trauma, relationships matter, and trust is a key in forming healthy working relationships. Intentionally teaching adults and teachers how to evoke calmness in ourselves and breathe to handle negative situations, trusted educators can then teach children to do the same. It is important that educational leaders, and other stakeholders, explore what works best to help children overcome trauma and become resilient and productive adults. This study examined the relationship between social, emotional, and behavioral skills of students entering kindergarten who have been intentionally taught skills needed for resiliency by highly …

Other QIC-WD Products

What is ARC and why was it selected?

ARC stands for availability, responsiveness, and continuity and is an organizational change process. It is aimed at improving the organizational culture and climate and the availability, responsiveness, and continuity of services provision in human service organizations. ARC involves three primary strategies:

  1. embedding five core principles of effective organizations into all aspects of organizational functioning;

  3. building mental models and shared beliefs that support the successful application of ARC principles …

Midwest University Coach Perspectives On Student-Athlete Recruitment During Unprecedented Disruption, Jonah Bradley Feb 2022

Midwest University Coach Perspectives On Student-Athlete Recruitment During Unprecedented Disruption, Jonah Bradley

Leadership Education Capstones

One significant result of the pandemic was the cancellation of athletic events, games, and tournaments across various sports. This disruption forced coaches to develop new ways to communicate with recruits, attract student-athletes to campuses, and started a new era in athletic recruitment. The significant importance of recruitment on college athletic operations, especially in building competitive programs, is one of the most overwhelming challenges. Understanding coach responses to student-athlete recruitment during a crisis may offer tactics for improvement in recruitment practices.

A Dynamic System Of Job Performance With Goals And Leadership Changes As Shocks, Christopher R. Dishop, Valerie Good Feb 2022

A Dynamic System Of Job Performance With Goals And Leadership Changes As Shocks, Christopher R. Dishop, Valerie Good

Peer Reviewed Articles

Two consistent predictors of salesperson job performance include goals and leadership. Much of the research related to these domains, however, has two limitations. First, it is removed from an understanding of how effects operate when performance is viewed as a dynamic system, or a construct with inherent feedback loops and a tendency to ebb and flow over time. Second, it focuses on leadership behaviors rather than leadership changes (i.e., experiencing a change in one’s supervisor), even though employees in today’s workforce often experience the event of having a leader replaced. We extend this literature by establishing and testing a theory …

Risky Business? Shareholder Value Effects Of Service Provision, Antonios Karatzas, George Daskalakis, Marko Bastl, Mark Johnson

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Business model innovation by manufacturing firms, through the addition of services to the core product offerings, has been steadily on the rise. However, this can pose risks for the firms’ long-term viability and profitability. Here, we examine the short-term financial effects of the sale of different product-service combinations. We use the event study methodology to investigate the stock market reaction to 1025 new contract announcements by 41 large manufacturers from 1987 to 2016.679 of these announcements involve the sale of standalone products, while the remaining 346 are product-service deals which we classify as low-, medium- or high-risk depending on whether …

Climate change is the defining issue of our time. Taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts (Sustainable Development Goal 13) is one of the most wicked problems governments, companies, and civil society have ever had to solve (Reinecke & Ansari, 2016). The path to solving the climate crisis is reasonably well defined but the road ahead is treacherous. We need to decarbonize the economy so that we can decouple growth from carbon emissions. This requires massive investments in clean energy, a radical rethink of the food production system, and innovations in aviation and primary extractive industries to …

Over the years, ongoing conversations in Academy of Management Journal—and the broader management literature—have emphasized the value of research that bridges the macro and micro domains (Hitt, Beamish, Jackson, & Mathieu, 2007; Molloy, Ployhart, & Wright, 2011; Morgeson & Hofmann, 1999; Paruchuri, Perry-Smith, Chattopadhyay, & Shaw, 2018). Calls for cross-boundary work typically argue that bridging these two domains is required to understand and solve the complex management issues that societies face (George, Howard-Grenville, Joshi, & Tihanyi, 2016; House, Rousseau, & Thomas-Hunt, 1995; Kozlowski & Klein, 2000). Responses to the organizational challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, or to societal problems …

Human activity needs to become sustainable, and businesses have a massive role to play in it. Important progress has occurred. The Coronavirus pandemic has reinforced the importance of sustainability and resilience. Businesses have become champions of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), both by integrating them into their core activities and by developing strategies and metrics to achieve them. Despite this progress, more must be done to achieve sustainability targets on a timetable that is relevant. While the narratives of businesses are often exciting, their follow-through with implementation remains limited. So too is information on successful practices, conceptual knowledge …

Recognizing that university statements about equity, diversity, and inclusion are often cosmetic, performative, or at best, aspirational, rather than indicative of on-campus realities, this project analyzes interpretations of student identity and diversity through publicly available materials. The primary purpose of this research was to investigate how university messages about equity, diversity, and inclusion, available through public websites, are interpreted by faculty and students. Using a students-as-partners approach, we identified and analyzed themes based on our own perceptions and understandings of each of five university websites University of Calgary (Canada), University of Alabama (USA), Deakin University (Australia), University of Exeter (UK), …

The Experiences Of Undergraduate Black Gay Men Who Use Hookup And Dating Apps While Attending A Predominantly White Institution, Tevis Denzell Bryant

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of undergraduate Black gay men who use hook up and dating apps while attending predominantly White colleges and universities. In using intersectionality as my theoretical framework, I was able to discover the essence of the experiences that Black gay men face while using these platforms. Intersectionality assisted the study in identifying the systems of privilege and oppression that are present for Black gay men, specifically when attempting to date within the LGBTQ+ community (Cho et al., 2013; Collins, 2015; Garcia & Ortiz, 2013). Through this framework I additionally began to …
