What Kind Of Sociology Is Useful To Social Workers?, Alfred Mcclung Lee Sep 1976

What Kind Of Sociology Is Useful To Social Workers?, Alfred Mcclung Lee

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Both social workers and sociologists have been trying desperately for more than a century to live down their miscellaneous ancestry. Both are still embarrassed that their disciplines are rooted historically in the work of oldtime clergy, police, utopian philosophers, sentimentalists, reactionary manipulators, and radical thinkers and agitators. Nevertheless it was from those men's and women's concerns, their perceptions of social problems, their efforts at social amelioration and reform or revolution, and their inter-cult conflicts that the two corps of modern professionals sprang.

An Evaluation Of Transactional Analysis As A Strategy Of Organization Development, Gilbert Frank Nykodym Ii Aug 1976

An Evaluation Of Transactional Analysis As A Strategy Of Organization Development, Gilbert Frank Nykodym Ii

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Introduction

Organizational Development (OD) and Transactional Analysis embrace a humanistic philosophy of organizational life. Connor noted: "Commitment to traditional humanistic concerns of individual growth, development, dignity, worth, and meaning is expressed in all OD literature (1975, p. 349)." Transactional Analysis (TA) takes an identical position.

We are living in the Age of Aquarius. Knowledge is no longer coveted by the chosen few who call themselves experts. Anyone who can read can gain expertise. It is fitting and appropriate at this time in human history that a model for behavior and human interaction (TA) has come along that can be used …

The International Role Of "Domestic" Bureaucracy, Raymond F. Hopkins Jul 1976

The International Role Of "Domestic" Bureaucracy, Raymond F. Hopkins

Political Science Faculty Works

Many agencies of the United States Government with nominally "domestic" mandates play important roles in international affairs, and collaborate extensively with other governments and international organizations in the performance of their tasks. In some areas, these agencies rather than intergovernmental organizations play key management roles. Data gathered from a variety of sources indicate the extensiveness of this involvement, and suggest that it continues to expand, although not in linear fashion. Certain trends in governmental reorganization, such as those in the Agriculture Department, suggest similar patterns to those observed in business firms as they become more heavily involved abroad. More attention …

The Development Of Administrative Policy On The Utilization Of Policewomen To Their Fullest Potential: An Assessment Of The Albuquerque Police Department, Gunther A. Haselbauer Apr 1976

The Development Of Administrative Policy On The Utilization Of Policewomen To Their Fullest Potential: An Assessment Of The Albuquerque Police Department, Gunther A. Haselbauer

Public Administration ETDs

The Criminal Justice System of this nation has, since its beginning, always attracted considerable commentary from the news media and the citizenry. This is primarily true because the police, courts and the corrections departments invariably touch our lives in more ways than one.

In surveying the more recent and controversial developments in law enforcement, I have found police administrators nationwide all have a similar issue to resolve – the question of women in policing. However, in the context of formulating organizational change, they have found little empirical data dealing with this issue, and this is due to the scarcity or …

Directions For Change In Police Organizations, John E. Angell Apr 1976

Directions For Change In Police Organizations, John E. Angell

Conference papers

Three situations serve to hamper police effectiveness under traditional police organizational arrangements First, police operations are based on an assumption that police are primarily in the "criminal apprehension" business. This concept of the police role serves to constrain many police activities that offer potential for satisfying client needs and contributing to crime prevention. Second, police managers rely almost exclusively on the tenets of Bureaucratic Theory, as promulgated by Max Weber (1947), for arranging and managing police organizations. This reliance contributes to problems in the police and community relationship, coordination and direction of police operations, and (3) motivation of police employees. …
