The Springs Bulletin - December 1983, Springs Cotton Mills

The Springs Bulletin 1980-1983

The Springs Cotton Mill originated with the establishment of the Fort Mill Manufacturing Co., which opened its first plant in Fort Mill, SC, in 1888. Over time, the company expanded, opening additional plants in Lancaster, Chester, and Kershaw, SC. At its peak, Springs was the largest industrial employer in South Carolina. In 2001, Springs began a partnership with the Brazil-based company Coteminas, and in 2005, the two companies merged to form Springs Global. By 2007, Springs had ceased all manufacturing operations in South Carolina. The Springs Bulletin was a newspaper for Springs employees, providing updates on the company's plants, departments, …

Input Frequency And Perceived Impact Of An Interactive Newsletter In A Small Organization, Patricia Calle

Masters Theses

A newsletter, based on the results of two tailor-made self-report questionnaires, was implemented in a vegetable by-product manufacturing company with 83 employees. Need for improvement was detected in the formal communication of organizational policies, projects, goals and events for downward and upward communication relative to performance feedback, non-monetary performance incentives, and response to job-related and personal requests. The newsletter was aimed at facilitating the supply of verbal incentives, performance feedback, formal and informal organizational information and participation in different areas. Prompting procedures were designed to encourage employees' participation in the newsletter. Newsletter impact was analyzed in terms of pre- and …

Rearrangement Of The Keratin Cytoskeleton After Combined Treatment With Microtubule And Microfilament Inhibitors, Loren W. Knapp, W. Michael O'Guin, Roger H. Sawyer Dec 1983

Rearrangement Of The Keratin Cytoskeleton After Combined Treatment With Microtubule And Microfilament Inhibitors, Loren W. Knapp, W. Michael O'Guin, Roger H. Sawyer

Faculty Publications

In addition to containing microtubule and microfilament systems, vertebrate epithelial cells contain an elaborate keratin intermediate-filament cytoskeleton. Little is known about its structural organization or function. Using indirect immunofluorescence microscopy with an antikeratin antiserum probe, we found that destabilization of microtubules and microfilaments with cytostatic drugs induces significant alterations in the cytoskeletal organizationof keratin filaments in HeLa and fetal mouse epidermal cells. Keratin filament organizationwas observed to undergo a rapid (1-2 h) transition from a uniform distribution to an open lattice of keratin fibers stabilized by membrane-associated focal centers . Since addition of any one drug alone did not elicit …

Decreeing Organizational Change: Judicial Supervision Of Public Institutions, Donald L. Horowitz Dec 1983

Decreeing Organizational Change: Judicial Supervision Of Public Institutions, Donald L. Horowitz

Duke Law Journal

In the last fifteen years or so, courts have issued a small but significant number of decrees requiring that governmental bodies reorganize themselves so that their behavior will comport with certain legal standards. Such decrees, addressed to school systems, prison and mental hospital officials, welfare administrators, and public housing authorities, insert trial courts in the ongoing business of public administration. In this article, Professor Horowitz traces the origins, characteristics, and consequences of organizational change decrees. He finds their roots in an unusually fluid and indeterminate system of procedural forms and legal rules, a system hospitable to the impact of changing …

Utilization Of Research In Combating Violence In Alaska: An Ecological Perspective, Johnson W. N/A

Conference papers

Research diffusion and use has increasingly become an interest of social scientists and policymakers. This interest on the part of policymakers is evidenced by the results of this study. In particular, high level administrators in 268 human service agencies of Alaska reported moderate to high use of statistics, evaluation studies and other social science research in making pol icy decisions about combating violence. Findings are also presented that point to specific facilitators and inhibitors of research use. The conclusions and policy implications highlight how the results of this research utilization study can direct the formulation of a research and development …

Two Apparently Effective Strategies For Increasing Employee Compliance, Ann M. Backe Aug 1983

Two Apparently Effective Strategies For Increasing Employee Compliance, Ann M. Backe

Masters Theses

The present study investigated the controlling aspects of employee participation on compliance to store procedures through the use of a total participative group and a group trained in the technical and beneficial aspects of the procedures. Five grocery store cashiers comprised the Participative Group and six cashiers comprised the Value- and Skill- Trained (VST) Group. The researcher conducted one meeting with the members of the Participative Group to design procedures to decrease the number of checks returned to the stores because of non-sufficient funds. Following the development of the new procedures, the Participative Group received technical training on the procedures. …

Theory Z And Administrative Management, Judy Cureton, Bob Cureton Aug 1983

Theory Z And Administrative Management, Judy Cureton, Bob Cureton

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Focused on communication departments in higher education, this article considers Theory Z as a framework for administrative management during periods of limited resources. It describes Theory Z as an approach grounded in participatory decision making, egalitarian relationships, delegation, shared philosophy, and attention to human resources. The discussion links these principles to communication administration by emphasizing consensus, quality circles, departmental self study, consumer definitions of program quality, and long range planning. It also addresses hiring, evaluation, rewards, recognition, and the influence of individual interests on departmental objectives. The article closes by discussing trust, subtlety, and intimacy as interpersonal foundations for management, …

Effects Of Positive, Negative And Balanced Emphases On Perceived Effectiveness Of Performance Appraisal, Joseph Andrew Hammond Aug 1983

Effects Of Positive, Negative And Balanced Emphases On Perceived Effectiveness Of Performance Appraisal, Joseph Andrew Hammond

Masters Theses

The central theme of the research is the experimental manipulation of three different appraisal processes, namely positive, negative, and balanced appraisals to determine which evaluation tool would be perceived as most useful in motivating and stimulating employees to improve on their performance. Subjects were randomly assigned to groups and presented with scripts exemplifying three appraisal approaches and asked to evaluate the perceived effectiveness of each approach in producing a desired performance outcome. The results showed significant differences between the balanced approach and the other two approaches. However, there was no significant difference between the means of the positive versus negative …

The Relationship That Teachers' Concerns And Their Perceptions Of Organizational Climate Have With Innovation Maintenance, Frederic Wayne De Vall Aug 1983

The Relationship That Teachers' Concerns And Their Perceptions Of Organizational Climate Have With Innovation Maintenance, Frederic Wayne De Vall

Dissertations

The main purpose of this study was to determine what some of the factors are that have an affect upon the maintenance of an innovation. Many educational change models focus upon the initiation and implementation of educational innovations in schools. This study tested some of the factors identified, from the literature review as affecting innovation maintenance, upon one innovation which is being used by teachers in several school districts. The first factor centered upon the concerns teachers have about an innovation they use in their classrooms. The second factor centered upon teachers' perceptions of the organizational climate that exists which …

Burnout And The Reading Teacher, James C. Sadler, James W. Cunningham Jul 1983

Burnout And The Reading Teacher, James C. Sadler, James W. Cunningham

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

It's the end of the school day on Friday and most of the teachers are congregating in the lounge and classrooms, happily anticipating the weekend. Carole, however, walks straight to the parking lot without pausing to speak to colleagues as she did in former years. Today she informed the principal that she would not be renewing her contract as a remedial reading teacher and, although saddened by her decision, she also feels relief that months of increasing frustration and self-doubt have reached a conclusion.

Part of the tragedy of this hypothetical but all too familiar example of Carole is her …
