Nicaragua: United States Assistance To The Nicaraguan Human Rights Association And The Nicaraguan Resistance, Suzanne B. Goldberg, Lee Crawford, Kevin Reed, John Tennant

Faculty Scholarship

The question of providing aid to the Nicaraguan Resistance has been significant to United States human rights policy throughout the Reagan Administration. Although events have changed repeatedly during the winter of 1988, including a truce between the Nicaraguan Government and the Resistance and a Congressional decision not to provide military aid to the Resistance, the underlying policy issues remain constant. The Harvard Human Rights Yearbook presents two notes, infra, discussing the Military Construction Appropriations Act of 1987, which granted $100 million in aid to the Nicaraguan Resistance. The first note discusses the Nicaraguan Human Rights Association (Asociacidn Nicaraguense Pro-Derechos Humanos …

Work Energy And The Character Of Organizations: An Orgonomic Framework For Organization Development, Martin D. Goldberg Jan 1988

Work Energy And The Character Of Organizations: An Orgonomic Framework For Organization Development, Martin D. Goldberg

Theses and Dissertations

To date, the field of organization development (OD) has lacked the kind of unifying approach to theory and practice that would enable it to be considered a discipline. The present study, in conception and methodology, commences building a unified framework for OD based on the work of psychiatrist and natural scientist Wilhelm Reich (1897-1957). By conceptually merging the field of OD with the science of orgonomy, that body of knowledge based on Reich's discoveries, this project lays the foundations for a comprehensive theory that can lead to greater understanding of the nature, development, and functioning of organizations, a theory with …

The Emergence Of The Middle School In Independent Education, Lawrence S. Sykoff Edd Jan 1988

The Emergence Of The Middle School In Independent Education, Lawrence S. Sykoff Edd

Dissertations

Independent schools across the nation have adopted the middle school concept. The critical element in the evolution of the middle school in independent education is that the unique and marked changes in the overall intellectual and psycho-social development of adolescents have been systematically identified and integrated into a multi-divisional (K-12) structure. The literature and statistical information documenting the emergence of the middle school in independent education has been minimal. While contemporary research on public middle schools is extensive, very little data collection or theoretical models have been accumulated about the middle school movement in the private sector. The present study …

Some Reasons Why New Technologies Are Not Always Successful - Specifically Directed Toward Cim, Shuk Fong Lai

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

To keep the competitive edge, many companies constantly implement new technologies. However, the implementation of these new technologies are not always successful. Why?

Problems with implementation of new technologies can be either technical or managerial. This paper presents research limited to management problems and suggests the necessary changes. It also outlines the important factors in the decision-making process and the criteria for a successful implementation of a Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) system. Many experts believe that CIM is the ultimate solution to slow and reverse the decline of the U.S. global manufacturing market. However, some companies that have implemented CIM …

Book Review: Manfred, F.R., Kets De Vries, And Danny Miller. 1985. The Neurotic Organization, Antonio R. Arevalo Jr.

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Such a quest for excellence almost always involves the arduous task of managing the premier asset of any organization: the human resources. And because Man, as compared to other resources, is much more complex and dynamic to handle, let alone understand, not any organization has been that successful in affecting, as one had coined it, a truly "Human Organization for Peak Performance." Thus, the search for new and better ways of improving the organization's overall performance continues to be attended to with ever-increasing zeal.

Analyzing The Shape Of Organizational Adaptability In Response To Environmental Jolts, David W. Britt

Clinical Sociology Review

Examining how organizational systems have responded to external jolts (threats, crises, etc.) is a useful precursor to large-scale organizational development projects. The shape of adaptability is introduced as a sensitizing concept for facilitating such analyses. The suggested elements of shape consist of three critical performance levels ([1] at the time of the jolt; [2] at the lowest point after any fall off in performance; and [3] its recovery level), and three time periods ([1] how long the organization is able to resist a fall off in performance [Resistance]; [2] how long it takes the organization to recover to its original …

Organizational Stress Management And Resulting Role Implications For The Organizational Health Promotion Professional, Laurinda K. Young

Graduate Research Papers

Organizational stress significantly impacts on U.S. businesses and has been identified as being responsible for a high percentage of employee absenteeism, turnover, health claims, decreased productivity and low morale. Estimates of the direct and indirect costs of stressrelated dysfunction within this sector are between $100 and $150 billion per year. Organizations are increasingly concerned about the impact of stress on individual and corporate health and are implementing a wide variety of stress management programs. At this point, however, few companies are able to demonstrate that stress management programs are effective.

The purpose of this paper was to review and synthesize …
