Generative Artificial Intelligence And Collaboration: Exploring Religious Human-Machine Communication And Tensions In Leadership Practices, Pauline Hope Cheong, Liming Liu
Generative Artificial Intelligence And Collaboration: Exploring Religious Human-Machine Communication And Tensions In Leadership Practices, Pauline Hope Cheong, Liming Liu
Human-Machine Communication
The adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) applications has bolstered efforts toward human-machine collaboration. Given the lag in research on AI and religion, this study examines how pastors engage GAI to develop religious human-machine communication practices that constitute their leadership. Findings from in-depth interviews with pastors in the U.S. reveal that they view GAI as an idea generator, research assistant, co-author and translator. Clergy enact multiple ways to incorporate GAI communication in religious education and to enhance sermonic performances. Concurrently, pastors perceive tensions between innovation and established rites, as they contend with the authenticity and spiritual depth of GAI content …

Futuring Design Education Better: Practice, Experience, And Context, Andrew Whitcomb
Futuring Design Education Better: Practice, Experience, And Context, Andrew Whitcomb
Learn X Design Conference Series
Design education has a responsibility to continuously reconsider its purpose toward students and society. Yet, despite ongoing discussions about what futures for design education should contain, we have little scholarship on how futuring happens in the present. Without addressing the context of sociotechnical institutions, we run the risk of developing design education futures that perpetuate unsustainable ways of knowing, being, and making. This paper aims to enrich conversations about design education futures by accounting for and critically reflecting on the experience of practicing as a design educator-researcher in a large public research university in the United States. Drawing inspiration from …
From Diamonds To Braids: New Metaphors For Teaching Transformative Design, Melanie Kahl
From Diamonds To Braids: New Metaphors For Teaching Transformative Design, Melanie Kahl
Learn X Design Conference Series
Drawing from my experience as a hybrid practitioner-educator, this pedagogical statement examines how we teach the invisible dimensions of transformative design. While traditional design process diagrams and metaphors—from squiggles to diamonds—effectively structure design activities, they fall short in teaching students how to facilitate transformative design processes. I propose braiding as a complementary cross-cultural metaphor that illuminates the concurrent processes woven through design work. I define four fundamental strands that expert practitioners weave into complex design processes: learning (growing capacity), narrative (weaving stories), relationships (growing connections and trust), and change (rehearsing transformation). This framework emerged from my practice of teaching students …
