Staff Education Program On Medication Reconciliation In Primary Care, Virginia Ann Bloomer Aug 2025

Staff Education Program On Medication Reconciliation In Primary Care, Virginia Ann Bloomer

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Medication errors represent a persistent threat to patient safety, particularly during transitions of care in outpatient settings. Despite recognition of the problem, standardized medication reconciliation practices among primary care physicians and nurse practitioners (NPs) remain inconsistent, hindered by varied workflows, unclear responsibilities, and knowledge gaps. To address these issues, a staff education program focusing on medication reconciliation was introduced to seven NPs and three physicians in a primary care clinic. Pre- and post-intervention surveys measured participants’ knowledge and confidence in conducting medication reconciliation and documenting medications in electronic medical records. The average test score improved from 68% to 92%, demonstrating …

The Lived Experience Of Bariatric Patients During The Pre-Surgical Evaluation, Nathan Paul Wharton Aug 2025

The Lived Experience Of Bariatric Patients During The Pre-Surgical Evaluation, Nathan Paul Wharton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Patients undergoing bariatric surgery have no standard of care for the pre-surgical evaluation process (PSE). Often, these patients look at the PSE as just another hurdle to jump through before reaching surgery. The PSE, however, offers an opportunity for mental health professionals to prepare the patient for the challenging lifestyle changes necessary for weight loss maintenance in the long term. The problem being studied is whether patients feel they are prepared for the unique mental health challenges, eating disorder challenges, and strict lifestyle changes during the PSE. The study followed a qualitative interpretative phenomenological analysis approach to explore the lived …

Predation By The Brown Vine Snake, Oxybelis Koehleri, On The Autotomized Tail Of An Escaping Common Anole, Anolis Humilis, Jose M. Mora, Myzell Kenneth Amaro

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

During a natural history hike at La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica, we observed a Brown Vine Snake, Oxybelis koehleri, consuming the autotomized tail of a Common Humble Anole, Anolis humilis, which had escaped predation. This event represents a rare documented instance of a vine snake feeding exclusively on a detached lizard tail. Tail autotomy is a widespread anti-predator strategy among lizards, with the shed tail continuing to writhe post-detachment, potentially attracting predators. Lizard tails are lipid-rich and offer a convenient energy source, especially in resource-scarce environments. Although such behavior has been noted in other reptiles, it is seldom …

Vitamin D Deficiency And Its Role In Pathologies Of Oxidative Stress: A Literature Review, Philippe Dentino, Johanna Mora, Li Zuo Aug 2025

Vitamin D Deficiency And Its Role In Pathologies Of Oxidative Stress: A Literature Review, Philippe Dentino, Johanna Mora, Li Zuo

School of Medicine Publications

Vitamin D (VD) is a key mineral providing critical modulation of reduction-oxidation homeostasis within biological systems. VD and the VD receptor coordinate essential cellular activities, including mitochondrial electron transport, respiration, antioxidation, gene regulation, and calcium transportation. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), a natural by-product of cellular metabolism, play a prominent role in the mechanisms of biological antioxidant systems and form the basis of antioxidant therapies. However, ROS may also perpetuate pathological processes when produced in excess secondary to inflammatory pathways. Aging processes within cells rely on this reduction-oxidation homeostasis. Thus, the interaction with VD, its receptor, mitochondria, and oxidative stress forms …
