A Qualitative Study About Healthcare Practices For Rural Guatemalan Women, Linda Johanson Sep 2025

A Qualitative Study About Healthcare Practices For Rural Guatemalan Women, Linda Johanson

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

The purpose for this qualitative study to assess the healthcare practices of women in rural Guatemala. Understanding how women there approach health would provide useful information for nurses involved in development of culturally sensitive sustainable healthcare programs in Guatemala, and in providing culturally sensitive care to Guatemalan patients who are living outside of their country.

Studies have confirmed many challenges that rural Guatemalan experience with respect to health care services. Medical equipment and medications are notably scarce for pediatric patients (Hughes et al., 2022), and availability of access to care for adolescents is also deficient (Hassan et al., 2020). Attempts …

Enriching Nutritional Status In The Intensive Care Unit Through Early Enteral Nutrition, Rizaldy Icawat Bandola Sep 2025

Enriching Nutritional Status In The Intensive Care Unit Through Early Enteral Nutrition, Rizaldy Icawat Bandola

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: The ASPEN recommended initiating enteral nutrition within 24-48 hours of hospital admission to benefit the patient’s outcome.

Problem: Evidence shows the decline in nutritional status for critically ill populations over the week. The unfamiliar impact of nutrition on patient outcomes causes undertreated nutrition risks among patients, increasing the prevalence of hospital-acquired malnutrition.

Methods: The setting is a 20-bed MSICU, accommodating adult patients aged >18 years with medical and surgical critically ill conditions. The project used the Knowledge-To-Action framework. The project measures the hours from MSICU admission or intubation to enteral feeding administration over the 8-week timeframe.

Intervention: The evidence-based …

Creating The Thomas Mcrae Sanitorium For Negros: Race, Contagion, And Space In Jim Crow Arkansas, Shauna Gibbons

The Ozark Historical Review

The Thomas McRae Memorial Sanatorium for Negroes, located in Alexander, Arkansas, opened its doors in 1931 as the only resource for the entire state’s population of consumptive African Americans. It was touted as one of the best of its kind under the supervision of Dr Hugh A. Browne. But its “kind” was a facility intended for individuals whom whites in the medical and political establishment viewed not only as second class citizens but as biologically and medically different.

Life-History Stage-Dependent Effects Of Food Supplementation On Gut Microbiome Diversity In Sialia Sialis (Eastern Bluebird), Marcella D. Baiz, Allison Cornell

Biology Faculty Publications

Diet can be an important health factor that links fitness to an individual’s ecology. The gut microbiome responds to diet changes and plays an important role in host physiology. Dietary interventions are known to impact gut microbiome composition, but long-term effects and to what extent these impacts vary among individuals at different life-history stages are unclear. To address this question, we performed a supplemental feeding experiment by providing live mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) to Sialia sialis (Eastern Bluebird) during the chick-rearing period. We produced 16S metabarcoding data to quantify gut microbiome diversity from fecal samples of adults and nestlings …

Biting The Hands That Feed Us: Immigration Policy, Enforcement, And The Structural Vulnerability Of Agricultural Labor, Claire Kelly

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

The United States agricultural sector heavily relies on migrant labor, with undocumented workers composing a substantial share of the workforce. As the Trump Administration initiates its mass deportation policy, this article examines the far-reaching economic and legal consequences that such actions would impose on American agriculture. Mass deportation not only threatens to destabilize food production and inflate food prices, but it also exposes the longstanding legal neglect of farmworkers, whose labor protections remain fragile or non-existent under current U.S. law. This article analyzes the exploitation of agricultural workers embedded in the United States’ history, critiques the inadequacies of current programs …

Examining The Role Of The M1 Motif Of Abcr1 Srna In Agrobacterium Tumefaciens, Daniel Arango-Cardona

Theses and Dissertations

Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a gram-negative alphaproteobacterium that is one of the causative agents of crown gall tumors on plants. Its ability to transform plants using its T-DNA has been studied to improve plant-mediated transformation. sRNAs are small regulatory RNAs that play a role in gene expression in a variety of organisms and bind to target proteins or mRNAs. A. tumefaciens contains two sibling sRNAs, called AbcR1 and AbcR2, which are conserved among alphaproteobacteria. A. tumefaciens AbcR1 and AbcR2 are closely related, exhibiting 69% sequence identity, similar secondary and tertiary structure, and a conserved motif, M2, believed to direct target interactions. …

Chp1 Promotes Lipid Droplet Growth And Regulates The Localization Of Key Enzymes For Triacylglycerol Synthesis, Guang Yang, Ximing Du, Dougall Norris, Armella Zadoorian, Yuyuan Zheng, Mingming Gao, Andrew J Brown, Shane T Grey, Chun Zhou, Hongyuan Yang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The glycerol-3-phosphate (G-3-P) pathway is central to the synthesis of triacylglycerols (TAGs) and glycerophospholipids, essential for membrane biogenesis and lipid storage. The first and rate-limiting step in this pathway is catalyzed by glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferases (GPATs), with microsomal GPAT3 and GPAT4 being evolutionarily conserved and predominant in most tissues. While previous studies have implicated Calcineurin B homologous protein 1 (CHP1) as a cofactor for GPAT4, the broader role of CHP1 in regulating microsomal GPATs and TAG biosynthesis remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that CHP1 is a critical regulator of both GPAT3 and GPAT4, essential for their stability, enzymatic activity, and lipid …
