School of Medicine Publications
Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is a rare disorder caused by the deposition of abnormal proteins called amyloid in the myocardium, leading to dysfunction. The 2 most common forms of amyloidosis are AL (light chain) and ATTR (transthyretin). Diagnosing amyloidosis is challenging, especially in its early stages, due to its nonspecific symptoms and overlap with other conditions. Recent studies suggest that the incidence of wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis is rising, likely due to improved diagnostic techniques and an aging population. We present the case of a 72-year-old male with lower extremity edema, progressive shortness of breath, and worsening renal function. He had a …

Topic importance: Invasive candidiasis (IC) is a common complication in patients in ICUs. IC can be divided into bloodstream infections (candidemia) and deep-seated infections. Candida infections are associated with high mortality and longer hospital stays. Moreover, the emergence of Candida auris and other species prone to cause ICU outbreaks highlights the importance of this pathogen.
Review findings: Candidemia represents about 20% of bloodstream infections in ICU patients, whereas intraabdominal candidiasis, the most common form of deep-seated infection, predominantly affects surgical ICU patients. Regarding species distribution, Candida albicans is the most common species; however, non-albicans species have become more prevalent in …

Valorization Of Palm Oil Wastes Into Oyster Mushrooms (Pleurotus Hk-37) And Biogas Production, Aneth B. David, Anthony M. Mshandete
Tanzania Journal of Science
The study explored the potential of co-production of oyster mushroom Pleurotus HK-37 and biogas from palm oil waste fractions to add value and mitigate environmental impact. Nine different blends of waste fractions were subjected to mushroom production. The highest mushroom yield and biological efficiency were obtained from a blend that combined equal amounts of palm mesocarp fiber (PMF) and empty fruit bunch (EFB) waste fractions supplemented with 1% palm oil mill effluent (POME) and sediments (SD). The spent mushroom substrates (SMS) were used in biogas production, compared to fresh waste blends, biogas volume was higher across all but two treatments. …
