Mapping The Milk: Integrating Donor Human Milk Into Infant Nutrition Systems, Delaney Hartmann Jan 2022

Mapping The Milk: Integrating Donor Human Milk Into Infant Nutrition Systems, Delaney Hartmann

Scripps Senior Theses

A human milk diet is an important part of the health and survival of all infants. A human milk diet is especially crucial for the most vulnerable preterm infants as it promotes a healthy gut and protects from Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC). However, many preterm infants are unable to consume their mother’s own milk due to breastfeeding challenges resulting from early delivery. Therefore, nutritional supplementation is often necessary for preterm infants and donor human milk (DHM) is highly superior to baby formula. DHM in the United States is processed at the 29 not-for-profit Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) …

Food sovereignty emphasizes the rights of people to have control over their food system. Relocalizing food production and limiting dependence on global industrial supply chains is necessary to increase food sovereignty in regions dominated by conventional food systems. In the US, the New England region aims to relocalize production by producing 50 percent of food consumed in the region by the year 2060. Rhode Island can contribute to this goal by expanding production and strengthening local food systems, thus serving as a model for New England and other urbanizing regions globally. For this study, a site suitability analysis was performed …

Home Grown: An Experimental Analysis Of Home-Methods Of Mold Removal On Textile Substrates, Paige Bailey Jan 2022

Home Grown: An Experimental Analysis Of Home-Methods Of Mold Removal On Textile Substrates, Paige Bailey

Open Access Master's Theses

When seeking information on how to clean away mold from clothing and textiles, searching the internet can lead to an overwhelming amount of confusing and vague information. A lack of reputable references and consistent measurements across methodologies makes attempting to clean textiles, valuable or not, potentially damaging to the textile itself. As such, the objective of this experiment was to select a handful of these cleaning methods and test them with the expectation that the results will contribute to reliable information on what methods could possibly work for certain textiles. It is the hope that this information will be made …

Black youth with high body weights (BYHW; BMI ≥ 95th percentile) endure unique stressors that may contribute to psychopathology, but more research is needed on factors associated with fewer stress-related reactions among these youth. Utilizing linear regression modeling and controlling for youth BMIz scores, the current study examined how resilience and weight-related quality of life were associated with stress-related reactions as reported by 32 treatment-seeking BYHW (Mage = 14.19; MBMIZ = 2.59) and one of their primary caregivers (N = 64). Findings showed that dyadic differences exist in what BYHW and their caregivers perceive as associated with youth stress-related reactions. …

Mate Preference And Parental Investment In Wild Songbirds, Kelly Danielle Miller Jan 2022

Mate Preference And Parental Investment In Wild Songbirds, Kelly Danielle Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In sexually reproducing species, fitness maximization requires obtaining a mate whose optimal reproductive strategy may not be compatible with one’s own optimum. Thus, the classic tradeoff between investment in current offspring vs. surviving to produce future offspring is shaped by various decisions, including one’s choice of mate. Because males and females face fundamentally different selective pressures, the “perfect match” seldom exists, requiring that individuals shift investment strategies according to social and environmental conditions. I examined these tenets of life-history evolution in two species of wild songbird. First, I manipulated incubation effort of female Carolina wrens to assess the role of …

Transgender athletes face discrimination based on negative societal attitudes in many life arenas; they particularly confront prejudice in the arena of sport. This study examined the attitudes of some of the most influential people in an athlete’s life, coaches. The study examined coach gender, conformity to masculinity norms (particularly hegemonic masculinity norms of power over women and heterosexual self-presentation), and level of physical contact in sport as related to negative attitudes toward transgender athletes. In light of the recent spate of anti-transgender legislation focusing on transwomen athletes, attitudes toward directionality of transition within transgender athletes were also investigated. Data were …

In Search Of Our Mothers' Garden: A Womanist Witnessing Of Black Motherhood And Mental Health, Dorothy'e Gott Jan 2022

In Search Of Our Mothers' Garden: A Womanist Witnessing Of Black Motherhood And Mental Health, Dorothy'e Gott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

It is reported that 7.5 million African Americans are diagnosed with mental illness, and up to 7.5 million more may be affected without formal diagnosis (Davis, 2005). Acknowledging a 2:1 gender ratio of depression, women may be over-represented in this population (Immerman & Mackey, 2003). African American women’s lower rates of utilization of mental health services, which has been suggested to be impacted by stigma surrounding mental health, serves as an additional barrier for the attainment of optimal mental health. Thompson-Sanders et al. (2004) suggested that Black women who believe that living with psychological pain is part of her role …

An Ethnographic Study Of Homelessness In Memphis During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Tharwa Bilbeisi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Abstract This dissertation is an ethnographic study that examines the health beliefs of persons experiencing homelessness in Mid-town Memphis. It considers participants' social practices and environmental circumstances and analyzes how the global pandemic may have informed their health beliefs. Social determinants such as neighborhood safety, unemployment, racism, and transportation exacerbate issues of absenteeism, poor dietary/health-related habits, and further mistrust in health systems and public aid. Low “compliance,” a term used in health care to describe patient behaviors of non-adherence to prescribed medical treatments, is problematic in its connotation of intent or deliberateness without consideration of socioeconomics and other sociocultural matters. …

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) occurs in many different types of chemical reactions. PCET involves the transfer of protons and electrons from one location to another. It is involved in both organic and inorganic chemistry in systems such as those of photosynthesis, metabolism, and respiration. The theoretical formulations of PCET reactions are founded on the theoretical treatment of electron transfer. These reactions lie on a spectrum from hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) to multiple-site couple proton-electron transfer (MS-CPET). The properties that any given reaction has can be quantified with the use of a potential energy surface (PES). The specific geometry of the …

Social Recognition Memory In Meadow Voles, Microtus Pennsylvanicus, Depends On Sex And Familiarity, Kelsey Elizabeth Clark Jan 2022

Social Recognition Memory In Meadow Voles, Microtus Pennsylvanicus, Depends On Sex And Familiarity, Kelsey Elizabeth Clark

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Proper social interactions between animals require that an individual discriminate, recognize, and remember the unique cues from conspecifics. Many aspects of social behavior, such as individual recognition, mate recognition and parent-offspring recognition, may be based on such capabilities. To test social recognition over time, subjects are often repeatedly presented with scent from an individual or have prolonged associations with those individuals and then, later, they are simultaneously exposed to familiar and novel individuals or their scents. If the subject can discriminate between the two and recognize the familiar individual’s characteristics, they should investigate the novel stimulus significantly more than the …

T Cell Changes Induced By Dietary/Weight Change, Aljowhara Aljeraiwi Jan 2022

T Cell Changes Induced By Dietary/Weight Change, Aljowhara Aljeraiwi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Obesity is a condition that affects many people and is associated with numerous health issues and chronic diseases, including viral infections. For example, during the SARS-CoV2 epidemic, obesity emerged as a major risk for severe COVID 19. Obesity has been shown to increase T cell exhaustion resulting in loss of CD8+ T cell functions and reducing the immune system's capacity to fight infectious diseases. Exhausted T cells can be identified by the increased expression of the membrane protein Programmed Cell Death 1 (PD-1). While many studies demonstrate that a high-fat diet and an increase in weight can affect the immune …

Multi-Tissue Time-Domain Nmr Metabolomics For Robust And Accurate Assessment Of Dietary Effects, Hayden Johnson Jan 2022

Multi-Tissue Time-Domain Nmr Metabolomics For Robust And Accurate Assessment Of Dietary Effects, Hayden Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a quantitative, non-destructive analytical technique for identifying and quantifying metabolites. Conventional quantitative NMR analysis involves processing the recorded time-domain signal into a frequency-domain spectrum along with user-dependent processing and resonance characterization steps which may introduce bias and error. This study implements a Bayesian approach for data analysis in the time-domain to bypass these drawbacks and increase automation in metabolite quantification. The time-domain workflow is first assessed using metabolite reference standards to validate accurate resonance identification and quantification before profiling metabolites in liver, heart, and white adipose tissue of a diurnal animal model, the Nile …

Cancer cachexia is a chronic wasting disorder characterized by severe loss of skeletal muscle that affects approximately 80% of cancer patients. Altered rest-activity is a hallmark of circadian disruption and is often seen in cachectic patients. It is unknown how skeletal muscle clock gene expression is altered with the progression of cachexia. We investigated skeletal muscle clock gene expression during cachexia. Tissue from ApcMin/+ mice (MIN) were harvested in the morning and evening and were analyzed for clock gene expression. Per 2 and Per 3 increased expression in the evening. Rev-ERBα showed decreased expression in BL – 6 mice in …

The Association Between Physical Fitness, Chronic Disease And Mortality In Childhood Cancer Survivors: A Report From The St. Jude Lifetime Cohort, Matthew Wogksch Jan 2022

The Association Between Physical Fitness, Chronic Disease And Mortality In Childhood Cancer Survivors: A Report From The St. Jude Lifetime Cohort, Matthew Wogksch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at an increased risk of chronic cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease and all-cause mortality compared to their cancer free cohorts. Increasing physical fitness in the cancer free population can decrease the risk of chronic disease. However, increasing physical fitness among CCS is difficult, possibly due to prior treatment. This may be due to survivor’s difficulty performing submaximal tasks. Also, survivors develop pulmonary disease quickly, increasing their risk for mortality. Therefore, this dissertation seeks to examine the associations of physical fitness, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality in CCS, as well as determine the associations between physiological cost …
