The Multi-Actor Perspective Of Engagement On Social Media, Sara Shawky, Krzysztof Kubacki, Timo Dietrich, Scott Weaven

Plymouth Business School

Despite the known benefits offered by social media to create engagement in social marketing programs, scholars have highlighted the need for more evidence-based, practical, and measurable approaches to social media use in social marketing contexts. This netnographic study employed a four-level multi-actor engagement framework originally proposed by Shawky et al. to explore engagement in a single Facebook community. We identified social media measurement tools for assessing connections, interactions, and loyalty of multiple actors which will assist social marketing practitioners’ understanding of different actors’ interactions with the social media content, enabling them to maintain these actors’ levels of engagement, advance their …

Dyshomeostasis of vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP) has been implicated in the patho-genesis of various pregnancy complications, including preeclampsia, preterm birth, gestational di-abetes, and adverse metabolic profiles in the offspring. VDBP polymorphisms have been consistently reported to contribute to this intriguing interplay. Until recently, the effects of VDBP poly-morphism heterogeneity on maternal and neonatal adipomyokine profiles have not been investi-gated, specifically after incorporating the different maternal and neonatal 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration cut-offs at birth. We aimed to investigate the potential effects of maternal and neonatal VDBP polymorphisms on adiponectin, irisin, and VDBP concentrations at birth, according to different cut-offs of vitamin …

Feeling The Burn: Assessing The Effects Of Fire Severity On Elk Nutritional Resources And Resource Selection, Lauren Ashley Snobl Jan 2022

Feeling The Burn: Assessing The Effects Of Fire Severity On Elk Nutritional Resources And Resource Selection, Lauren Ashley Snobl

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Wildfires in the western United States have been increasing in size and severity over the last several decades, and climate forecasts suggest a continued increase in wildfire activity in the future. Large-scale wildfires often burn in a mosaic-like pattern of varying fire severity creating a heterogenous landscape with concomitant effects on vegetation communities. By changing vegetative structure, fire severity potentially alters the availability and distribution of key resources for wildlife such as food and cover, ultimately influencing habitat use. However, the impact of fire on wildlife has frequently been treated as binary (i.e., burned vs unburned), and a deeper understanding …

24-Hour Total Energy Expenditure During Ultra-Endurance Cross-Country Cycling, Patrick S. Dodds Jan 2022

24-Hour Total Energy Expenditure During Ultra-Endurance Cross-Country Cycling, Patrick S. Dodds

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have used the doubly labelled water (DLW) method to evaluate the total energy expenditure (TEE) during Ironman, ultra-marathon trail runs and competitive road cycling. However, the technique has not been applied to a 24-hour cross-country mountain bike event. This case study examined the TEE, cycling metrics and ad libitum nutrient/fluid intake in a trained male cyclist during a 24-hour cross-country mountain bike race. A trained male cyclist (41 y, 74.1 kg, 172.4 cm) received an oral dose of DLW prior to the 24-hour event for the calculations of TEE and water turnover (rH2O). Nude body …

Making “Habitat Quality” Meaningful: Quantifying Demographic Effects Of Habitat In Two Sympatric Species, Anna Katherine Moeller Jan 2022

Making “Habitat Quality” Meaningful: Quantifying Demographic Effects Of Habitat In Two Sympatric Species, Anna Katherine Moeller

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Habitat quality may be an underlying factor driving or exacerbating mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) population declines across their range and concurrent white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population increases. A clearer understanding of how the two species respond to habitat variables is needed to disentangle the drivers of mule deer decline and identify opportunities to change population trajectories through habitat management. Capitalizing on extensive monitoring data for sympatric populations of mule deer and white-tailed deer, this dissertation improves understanding of habitat quality by exploring and developing modeling approaches that connect habitat and demographics in these two species.

Environmental Effects On Constructed Wetland Microbial Diversity And Function In The Context Of Wastewater Management, Sandrine Grandmont-Lemire Jan 2022

Environmental Effects On Constructed Wetland Microbial Diversity And Function In The Context Of Wastewater Management, Sandrine Grandmont-Lemire

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Microbial communities play a crucial role in ecosystems, yet we know little about how microbial diversity influences ecosystem functioning. An important gap in our understanding is how environmental change affects microbial Biodiversity-Ecosystem Function relationships (BEF). These complex interactions between microbial biodiversity and ecosystem function can influence major biogeochemical processes, such as the nitrogen cycle in wetland ecosystems, which play an important role in managing wastewater. To address the effect of biodiversity on function, my study investigates the BEF relationships between microbial diversity and the function in terms of ammonia removal from wastewater at the Arcata Wastewater Treatment Facility (AWTF) both …

The Impact Of Exercise Therapy On Upper Extremity Strength In A Breast Cancer Survivor Diagnosed With Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema: A Single-Case Study, Nia E. Ward

Research Papers

Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is one of the complications resulting from treatment, particularly surgical removal of lymph nodes. It is defined as arm edema in breast cancer patients caused by interruption of flow in the axillary lymphatic system from surgery or radiation therapy, which results in the accumulation of fluid in the subcutaneous tissue of the arm, with a decrease in tissue distensibility around the joints and an increased weight of the extremity.

There are a number of therapies for the management of BCRL. Most common among them is decongestive lymphatic therapy, which includes exercise therapy. Exercise and movement plans …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Vitamin D levels have been investigated in children with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), but the relationship between vitamin D status and inflammation/oxidative stress indicators could not be clearly demonstrated. This study aimed to investi- gate the relationship between subclinical inflammation/oxidative stress and vitamin D status in children with FMF during an attack-free period. Materials and methods: In the cross-sectional study, ninety children with FMF in the attack-free period and 30 healthy children were included. Patients were grouped according to their vitamin D status (< 20, 20-29, and 30-100 ng/mL). The groups were compared in terms of pentraxin 3 (PTX-3), total oxidant status (TOS), and total antioxidant status (TAS). Multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with vitamin D status. Results: PTX-3 levels were significantly higher in patients with vitamin D insufficiency (20-29 ng/mL) than in the group with vitamin D sufficient (30-100 ng/mL). Patients with vitamin D deficiency (< 20 ng/mL) had higher TOS. A strong negative correlation was ob- served between vitamin D levels and TOS (p = 0.003). Subclinical inflammation (PTX-3 ≥ 0.640) and high TOS levels were negatively associated with vitamin D levels. Conclusion: Subclinical inflammation and oxidative stress were negatively associated with vitamin D levels in patients with FMF dur- ing an attack-free period. Sufficient vitamin D levels are important in fighting subclinical inflammation and oxidative stress in children with FMF.

The Development Of A Well-Being Program For Occupational Therapy Graduate Students, Stacy Smallfield, Emma Burry, Kelsey M. Lawrence, Kathy M. Yang, Katherine M. Chin, Hannahmarie Klute

Journal Articles: Occupational Therapy

High levels of stress among occupational therapy graduate students have led to the adoption of unhealthy coping habits such as poor nutrition, little exercise, and disrupted sleep. In response, many institutions have explored programming and even curricular changes to support student well-being. However, very few are built upon a strong theoretical foundation to address holistic well-being. Therefore, this paper describes how logic modeling was used to develop a student well-being program based on Facilitating Learning and Occupational Well-Being Using Research-Based Initiatives for Student Health (FLOURISH), a theoretical approach rooted in the Person-Environment-Occupation Performance Model. A well-being program delivered via a …

Cancer divergence has many facets other than being considered a genetic term. It is a tremendous challenge to understand the metastasis and therapy response in cancer biology; however, it postulates the opportunity to explore the possible mechanism in the surrounding tumor environment. Most deadly solid malignancies are distinctly characterized by their tumor microenvironment (TME). TME consists of stromal components such as immune, inflammatory, endothelial, adipocytes, and fibroblast cells. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) or cancer stem-like cells are a small sub-set of the population within cancer cells believed to be a responsible player in the self-renewal, metastasis, and therapy response of …

The Surprising Virtues Of Data Loyalty, Neil M. Richards, Woodrow Hartzog Jan 2022

The Surprising Virtues Of Data Loyalty, Neil M. Richards, Woodrow Hartzog

Scholarship@WashULaw

Lawmakers in the United States and Europe are seriously considering imposing duties of data loyalty that implement ideas from privacy law scholarship, but critics claim such duties are unnecessary, unworkable, overly individualistic, and indeterminately vague. This paper takes those criticisms seriously, and its analysis of them reveals that duties of data loyalty have surprising virtues. Loyalty, it turns out, can support collective well-being by embracing privacy’s relational turn; it can be a powerful state of mind for reenergizing privacy reform; it prioritizes human values rather than potentially empty formalism; and it offers solutions that are flexible and clear rather than …

No New Tax Cuts? Examining The Rescue Plan's New State Tax Limits, Conor Clarke, Edward Fox Jan 2022

No New Tax Cuts? Examining The Rescue Plan's New State Tax Limits, Conor Clarke, Edward Fox

Scholarship@WashULaw

In this article, Clarke and Fox examine the American Rescue Plan Act’s restrictions on state tax cuts, arguing that the restrictions are a variation on more familiar maintenance-of-effort provisions. These provisions are common, and are designed to help ensure that federal grants supplement rather than supplant state spending by requiring the state to maintain its level of spending on a program. Clarke and Fox conclude that the Rescue Plan’s requirements create similar incentives, and argue that the similarity makes it more likely that the act’s tax provisions are consonant with the Constitution’s spending clause.

The ethical conduct of research in any setting hinges on the voluntary and informed consent of research participants. Working towards consent that is truly voluntary and informed, however, is far from straightforward, and requires attention to contextual factors that may complicate achievement of this ideal in specific research settings. This paper is based on Madagascar’s first “Consent complexities in health research in Madagascar” workshop, held in Antananarivo, Madagascar, in October 2018. It identifies a number of challenges encountered by individuals responsible for the conduct or oversight of health research in Madagascar related to informed and voluntary consent. Key challenges identified …

BACKGROUND:

Research on nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA) has mostly been aimed at demonstrating its impact on nutrition and explicating underlying pathways, and more rarely at understanding processes and lessons learnt from them. This study aimed to gain insights into the processes that influence behaviour change, contributing to improved caring, feeding and food production practices, using a program theory perspective. It also investigated perceived challenges to the sustainability of interventions and potential solutions, in the context of an NSA program in rural Vietnam. Using a participatory approach, data were gathered on impact pathways and perceived outcomes, on elements of program theory that …

The Relationship Between Food Retailers And Distributors, Madison Seigler, Julia Anderson, Aidan Morton, Cassandra Williams, Victoria Bloomgren, Jacob Tutty

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Our understanding of the science of anthropogenic climate change and its immediate and indirect impacts has grown within the last decade.Alongside anincrease in concern for the inequities within the industrialized food system, climate change is impacting agriculture and the communities that depend on it in myriad ways. These challenges have catalyzed investment in sustainable agriculture, “eat local” food movements, and rethinking of all aspects of food systems, including consumers, producers, retailers, and distributors. The body of literature on food systems primarily focuses on the connection between consumers and retailers; however, there is a notable absence of literature on the relationships …
