Molecular Mechanism Of Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns In Association With Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease Resistance Of Heat Stressed-Shrimp Penaeus Vannamei, Supitcha Wanvimonsuk

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Non-lethal heat shock (NLHS) is known to enhance resistance to acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VPAHPND) in the Pacific white shrimp Penaeus vannamei. Generally, cell damage induced by stresses leads to the release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), molecules that act as endogenous danger signals to promote immune response. The first part of this research aims to study molecular mechanism of DAMPs that can enhance innate immunity upon NLHS treatment on VPAHPND resistance. We identified and characterized the candidate NLHS-induced DAMP that can activate innate immune responses against VPAHPND. The candidate DAMP genes were retrieved from the …

Neurophysiological And Psychological Characteristics Of Individuals With History Of Lateral Ankle Sprain, Katherine Bain Jan 2022

Neurophysiological And Psychological Characteristics Of Individuals With History Of Lateral Ankle Sprain, Katherine Bain

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is among the most common lower limb musculoskeletal injuries impacting both the general and sport populations. Even more problematic is that approximately 70% of individuals who sustain an LAS develop residual deficits. Of that subgroup, roughly 40% develop chronic ankle instability (CAI). Chronic ankle instability is a clinical diagnosis defined by the presence of ongoing impairments following the initial LAS which may include perceived instability, pain, mechanical instability, and episodes of giving way during physical activity. Not all who sustain multiple ankle sprains or experience residual deficits fit the clinical diagnosis criteria for CAI; yet may …

The Utilization Of Physical Literacy To Understand Physical Activity In Individuals With A History Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Rachel Renee Kleis Jan 2022

The Utilization Of Physical Literacy To Understand Physical Activity In Individuals With A History Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Rachel Renee Kleis

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is common in physically active populations. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is commonly performed after injury in order to restore joint stability and knee function and return patients to desired levels of physical activity. However, not everyone will return to their pre-injury levels of sport after surgery and recent evidence reveals that individuals with a history of ACLR are less likely to meet the recommended physical activity guidelines. Specifically, previous literature has reported that individuals with a history of ACLR take fewer daily steps and participate in less moderate-to-vigorous physical activity compared to …

Implementation Of Physical Activity In Kentucky Public Schools: From Theory To Policy, Nancy Kearns Jan 2022

Implementation Of Physical Activity In Kentucky Public Schools: From Theory To Policy, Nancy Kearns

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Physical activity in schools improves academic performance and fitness measures in children. However, state policy supporting implementation of physical activity remains poor. Identifying specific barriers to implementing physical activity minutes in Kentucky public schools is pivotal in preserving the cognitive and physical health of our children. This is of particular interest as physical activity minutes remain low despite the positive effects of exercise on cognition. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide policymakers and school administrators a method of identifying current policies, attitudes and infrastructure that inhibit the implementation of physical activity minutes in public schools. Thus, the findings, …

Charting A Course Past Spokeo And Transunion, Elizabeth Earle Beske Jan 2022

Charting A Course Past Spokeo And Transunion, Elizabeth Earle Beske

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in TransUnion LLC v. Ramirez has dramatically upended standing doctrine, apparently out of concern that any other move will invite congressional manipulation and give rise to even greater evils. The Court has done so at considerable cost. TransUnion’s concreteness inquiry leaves lower courts at sea, inviting them to substitute their own policy preferences for legislative will in frustration of the separation of powers. It curtails the deferential review of economic legislation the Court has employed since the New Deal. It circumscribes Congress’s ability to act proactively to respond to novel challenges. Bearing these costs, we …

Sizing An Open-Channel Woodchip Bioreactor To Treat Nitrate From Agricultural Tile Drainage And Achieve Water Quality Targets, Pam Krone, Ross Clark, Jason Adelaars, Mason Leandro, Alex Henson, Jessica Williamson, Heather Bischel, Olivia Wrightwood, Fred Watson Jan 2022

Sizing An Open-Channel Woodchip Bioreactor To Treat Nitrate From Agricultural Tile Drainage And Achieve Water Quality Targets, Pam Krone, Ross Clark, Jason Adelaars, Mason Leandro, Alex Henson, Jessica Williamson, Heather Bischel, Olivia Wrightwood, Fred Watson

AES Faculty Publications and Presentations

Woodchip bioreactors are capable of removing nitrate from agricultural runoff and subsurface tile drain water, alleviating human health hazards and harmful discharge to the environment. Water pumped from agricultural tile drain sumps to nearby ditches or channels could be cost-effectively diverted through a woodchip bioreactor to remove nitrate prior to discharge into local waterways. Sizing the bioreactor to achieve targeted outlet concentrations within a minimum footprint is important to minimizing cost. Determining the necessary bioreactor size should involve a hydrological component as well as reaction type and rates. We measured inflow and outflow nitrate concentrations in a pumped open-channel woodchip …

Using Complex Behavior To Understand Brain Mechanisms In Health And Disease, Cassandra D. Gipson, Paul L. Soto, Erin S. Calipari, Donna M. Platt, John D. Salamone, Rick A. Bevins Jan 2022

Using Complex Behavior To Understand Brain Mechanisms In Health And Disease, Cassandra D. Gipson, Paul L. Soto, Erin S. Calipari, Donna M. Platt, John D. Salamone, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

At this point in the history of the science of behavior, a focus on neuroscience-based outcomes has become dominant in neuropsychiatric fields at the preclinical and clinical levels of analysis. The notion that behavior is caused by brain function, and that changing brain function can alter behavior, has fueled this push to understand these neurobiological mechanisms. Within this conceptual framework and the funding to incentivize its adoption, the neuroscience field grew rapidly with the goal to understand the relation between the brain and behavior. As such, a reductionist perspective emerged whereby neural manipulations of increasing sophistication became required for assessing …

Composted sewage sludge (CSS) contains large amounts of organic matter and nutrients and can be used as an organic fertilizer to improve growth, yield, and quality of sugarcane. However, there is a lack of information regarding the impact of CSS application on sugarcane seedling performance in nursery environments. A field study was conducted using a randomized complete block design to evaluate the development, nutritional status, productivity, and technological quality of sugarcane seedlings after CSS application with or without mineral fertilizer. Morphological variables (stem height, diameter, and number, as well as leaf area), technological attributes (total recoverable sugar: ATR; quantity of …

In Sickness And In Health: Interactions Between Romantic Dyads, Power, And Health, Madisen Taylor Reasonover

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current study applied the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (Cook & Kenny, 2005) to assess influence in romantic dyads regarding health attitudes and behaviors (exercise, eating), and the moderating effects of gendered power. Associations between dyad similarity scores on health attitudes, health behaviors, and gendered relationship quality was also explored. Forty-five heterosexual romantic couples who were exclusively dating (72% White/Caucasian; age M = 22.3 years; relationship length M = 28.7 months) completed several questionnaires including: the Relationship Power Inventory – Overall (Farrell et al., 2015), the Perceived Relationship Quality Components Inventory (Fletcher et al., 2000), a modified Exercise Identity Scale (Anderson …

Background: One in five young children globally suffer the consequences of stunted growth and development and millions experience deficiencies in zinc, iron, iodine, vitamins A and B12, nutrients found bioavailable in fish foods. Small-scale fisheries have the potential to generate income and augment fish consumption while being environmentally sustainable if appropriately managed. However, those engaged in small-scale fisheries are often marginalized, poor, and malnourished. The Samaki Salama project seeks to better understand and address these challenges through a three-arm, longitudinal matched cluster study which evaluates the impact of an integrated nutrition social marketing and modified fishing trap intervention.

Childhood Obesity Interventions In The Republic Of Trinidad And Tobago: A Qualitative Study Exploring Government Policies And Their Implementation By Health Practitioners, Phyllis Woolford

Dissertations

Because of the rising prevalence of childhood obesity and overweight in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and the observation that efforts to address the problem were showing disappointing results, this study seeks to explore the experiences and views of policymakers, health practitioners, and parents of overweight and obese children, in order to inform leaders and policy makers regarding the current interventions.

Method

A qualitative research case study methodology is the research design used, which, with my research questions, I considered would best uncover knowledge and provide perspectives that would provide an increased understanding of the issues arising from the …

Economic Influence Activities And The Strategic Location Of Investment, John M. De Figueiredo, Davin Raiha

This article examines the economic influence activities (EIAs) of firms. We argue that firms invest in jobs and establishments in districts of congressional committee members that have oversight over their businesses and industries. This investment increases as legislators’ power rises in Congress. Our theory makes three predictions. First, EIAs by firms will be higher in congressional districts where the legislators have substantial political influence over the firm, relative to districts where legislators have little influence over the firm. Second, EIAs will increase with the legislators’ power on the focal committee. Third, when a legislator exits the committee, EIAs will diminish, …
