Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are neurodegenerative disorders that affect millions of individuals worldwide. As incidence of these conditions increases with age, there will undoubtedly be an increased prevalence of cases in the near future. Neuroinflammation is a hallmark in the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases and prevention or resolution of chronic neuroinflammation may represent a novel approach to treatment. The present review highlights the potential of the anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving effects of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)- derived mediators (Specialized Pro-resolving Mediators—SPM) in neurodegenerative disorders. PUFA-derived SPM are biosynthesized in response to chemicals produced from acute inflammatory …

African Americans (AA) are two times more likely to be diagnosed with and succumb to prostate cancer (PCa) compared to European Americans (EA). There is mounting evidence that biological differences in these tumors contribute to disparities in patient outcomes. Our goal was to examine the differences in DNA damage in AA and EA prostate tissues. Tissue microarrays with matched tumor-benign adjacent pairs from 77 AA and EA PCa patients were analyzed for abasic sites, oxidative lesions, crosslinks, and uracil content using the Repair Assisted Damage Detection (RADD) assay. Our analysis revealed that AA PCa, overall, have more DNA damage than …

Chronic low-grade inflammation is a hallmark of aging, which is now coined as inflamm-aging. Inflamm-aging contributes to many age-associated diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We have shown that gut hormone ghrelin, via its receptor growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R), regulates energy metabolism and inflammation in aging. Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbiome has a critical role in intestinal immunity of the host. To determine whether microbiome is an integral driving force of GHS-R mediated immune-metabolic homeostasis in aging, we assessed the gut microbiome profiles of young and old GHS-R global knockout …

Cancer cachexia is characterized by progressive muscle wasting that can lead to symptoms such as anemia, severe weight loss, and fatigue. These symptoms can lead to limitations in activities of daily living and can cause resistance to chemotherapy treatments in cancer patients. There are no current treatments available to treat cancer cachexia and a critical need remains to identify mechanisms of cancer cachexia. Recently, our group identified mitochondrial disfunction precedes muscle atrophy in males but not females in a model of lung cancer induced atrophy. However, it is unknown whether this finding is replicated when studying a different type of …

With disease progression, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) leads to debilitating complications arising from damage to nerves and blood vessels. Importantly, investigations focusing on T2DM progression have the capacity to distinguish individuals at greater risk for these severe complications through the identification of predictive biomarkers. Hence, the accurate diagnosis of T2DM is critical to such investigations. UC Davis (UCD) T2DM rats are born without diabetes and develop the disease over time with a similar pathophysiology to that in humans. This unique rat model allows researchers to investigate predictive biomarkers linked to the progression of T2D; however, such investigations require an …

The fatigue index is considered an important indicator of anaerobic fitness. The lower the fatigue index, the greater the ability of the body to maintain its power output through an anaerobic performance. The Wingate test is widely used by coaches, athletes, and researchers to measure lower body power, anaerobic capacity, and fatigue index. Body composition is considered an important component of anaerobic fitness, it is not clear how gender may influence the relationship between body composition and anaerobic fitness. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand how gender may impact the relationship between body composition and anaerobic …

The shape of glucose curve during an oral glucose tolerance test is a plausible risk factor for insulin resistance and other metabolic disorders and could be a potential biomarker for predicting risk for developing diabetes. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the glucose tolerance and substrate utilization between monophasic and biphasic glucose curve morphologies. METHODS: A total of 50 subjects (33/17 male/female; Age: 27 ± 7.74 years; BMI: 27.7 ± 4.97 kg/m2) without diabetes were tested for a two-hour oral glucose tolerance after ingesting 75g of glucose drink. Blood glucose levels were measured at time points …

ABSTRACT
Approximately 79% of the Hispanic population in the Rio Grande Valley (HPRGV) are overweight or obese. As such, this population also have ~3x the type 2 diabetes (T2D) rates than the US average. Distribution of adipose tissue, affected largely by genetics and lifestyle (diet and physical activity, has been identified as a key-marker for T2D risk among apparently healthy individuals. However, the relationship of lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity on android fat in healthy young Hispanics of the RGV has not been completely explored. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is …
