Activity Budgets Of Inland Versus Coastal Larus Argentatus Populations In Maine, Rebecca Cusick, Cassie Ferri
Undergraduate Research (Journal)
Comparing the behavior of wildlife populations residing in different habitats can give insight into external factors that influence behavior and explain why certain behaviors are exhibited by a species. In this study, we compared the average activity budgets of Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus) residing around inland and coastal habitats. We hypothesized that gulls in inland settings would be more likely to exhibit inactive behaviors such as loafing and sleeping, while gulls in coastal settings would exhibit more active behaviors such as foraging, walking, and squabbling. We observed a total of 100 individual gulls throughout the state of Maine, with 50 …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Increased antral follicles are associated with greater fertility and a uterine environment that is more supportive of early embryonic development in beef heifers. Glucose is a primary energy source for embryos, and glucose concentrations are elevated in uterine luminal fluid (ULF) of pregnant heifers. We hypothesized that ULF glucose concentrations and endometrial transcript abundance for glucose transporters on d16 after insemination would be greater in heifers with increased numbers of antral follicles. Heifers classified with either increased or diminished antral follicle counts were artificially inseminated following the CO-Synch protocol (d0). On d16 after insemination, reproductive tracts of heifers were collected …

Creation Of An Influenza A Virus Neuraminidase Consensus Vaccine In An Adenoviral Vector, Leigh Jahnke
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
In the last decade, the estimated annual burden of the flu includes 12,000-52,000 deaths, 140,000-710,000 hospitalizations, and 9 million – 41 million illnesses (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Disease burden of the flu). Influenza A virus can mutate and infect a variety of different hosts, which results in frequent antigenic changes and even pandemics. This has led to increased attention on the creation of a universal Influenza A vaccine containing broader immunogenic coverage than current vaccines. Our research involved detailing the steps of the cloning process utilizing a consensus neuraminidase antigen. We utilized the pAdEasy Adenoviral Vector …

We have previously identified a novel atherosclerosis quantitative trait locus (QTL), Arch atherosclerosis 5 (Aath5), on mouse chromosome 10 by three-way QTL analyses between Apoe−/− mice on a DBA/2J, 129S6 and C57BL/6J background. The DBA/2J haplotype at the Aath5 locus was associated with smaller plaque size. One of the candidate genes underlying Aath5 was Stabilin-2 (Stab2), which encodes a clearance receptor for hyaluronan (HA) predominantly expressed in liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs). However, the role of Stab2 in atherosclerosis is unknown. A congenic line of Apoe−/− mice carrying Aath5 covering the Stab2DBA allele …

The fourth lesson is the reliance on the private sector. In these economies, the private sector was allowed a free hand in the production, distribution and trade of goods and services. Japan had shown the way through big industrial conglomerates Keiretsus/Zaibatsus as did Korea through Chaebols. Taiwan adopted a different strategy – to promote industrialisation through smalland-medium enterprises. China, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia encouraged foreign direct investment and joint ventures. In China, the share of state owned enterprises in the economy has fallen to 30-40 percent from 100 percent. Most of the town and village enterprises owned by the …

Food Insecurity In The U.S.: Does Citizenship And Birthplace Matter?, Rita B. Thomson
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Studies generally show higher rates of food insecurity among the immigrant population in the U.S. than among the native born, but often no distinction regarding citizenship and birthplace is made. Nor is the fact that households are often a mixture of foreign born and native born considered. Here data from years 2014-2017 of the Current Population Survey are used to examine household food insecurity in association with household citizenship type and receipt of food assistance. Foreign birth is not always associated with greater risk of food insecurity. Of households including foreign born individuals, only households composed entirely of noncitizens are …

Iowa Wine Industry And Its Educational Needs, Aude A. Watrelot
Journal of Extension
The grape and wine industry in Iowa is based on non-Vitis vinifera grapes, which are not well-known and come with their own set of challenges. An industry survey revealed that wine business and marketing are the main concerns for the Iowa grape and wine industry members. The educational resources already provided by Extension personnel were highly appreciated and events should be offered in several locations around Iowa. The main topics of roundtables and discussions should be about vineyard management and winemaking practices, specifically practices to avoid microbial spoilage, to reduce wine acidity and to select appropriate yeasts for fermentation.

A regional survey of Extension agents with agriculture and natural resources responsibilities was conducted to assess the need for in-service training on 11 water resource conservation topics. The highest priority training needs were for topics related to complex interactions and drivers of agricultural water pollution. This article highlights the implications of these results and offers broader perspective on bringing the Borich model of needs assessment into the agricultural and natural resources realm of subject matter expertise.

The issues families in the military experience have been exacerbated by 20 years of continuous war. Families in the military across all the service branches are families first, sharing similar struggles as their civilian counterparts. Like many families, families in the military have day-to-day concerns about health, financial management, parenting and building positive relationships. Cooperative Extension is positioned to bridge the gap between building support systems and providing quality education, services and care to service members and their families–but are we ready to serve?
