Caffeine is widely accepted as an endurance-performance enhancing supplement. Most scientific research studies use doses of 3–6 mg/kg of caffeine 60 min prior to exercise based on pharmacokinetics. It is not well understood whether endurance athletes employ similar supplementation strategies in practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate caffeine supplementation protocols among endurance athletes. A survey conducted on Qualtrics returned responses regarding caffeine supplementation from 254 endurance athletes (f = 134, m =120; age = 39.4 ± 13.9 y; pro = 11, current collegiate athlete = 37, recreational = 206; running = 98, triathlon = 83, cycling = …
Examination Of Energy Needs In Male And Female Physically Active Individuals, Savanna Griffin
Examination Of Energy Needs In Male And Female Physically Active Individuals, Savanna Griffin
Senior Theses
Content: The Female Athlete Triad refers to three interrelated components: 1) low energy availability (LEA), with or without an eating disorder (ED); 2) harmful and physiologically impactful hormonal changes; and 3) alterations in bone mineral density, which are often experienced by individuals engaged in organized sports or other intense physical activities. This phenomenon is called the Female Athlete Triad because the relationship of components has thus far been observed primarily in females. A new term, the Male Athlete Triad, has been recently developed to describe the same phenomenon in males. LEA occurs when dietary energy intake (EI) is inadequate to …

Brick By Brick: Deconstructing Pyramid-Like Companies By Requiring Disclosures From Multilevel Marketing Schemes, Alex Chumbley
Brick By Brick: Deconstructing Pyramid-Like Companies By Requiring Disclosures From Multilevel Marketing Schemes, Alex Chumbley
William & Mary Business Law Review
Multilevel marketing companies ("MLMs") have thrived in the internet era as participants are able to market their products to their friends and followers on social media sites. Further, periods of high unemployment, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, have led to increased enrollment in these companies. However, very few people actually make any money from selling for these companies. Beyond that, almost half of those who participate lose money due to the enrollment costs. This Note examines past case law surrounding MLMs and critiques the current regulations in place that fail to ensure that new participants are making a fully …
It Takes A Village To Provide Quality Food For Our Pets, Diantha V. Ellis
It Takes A Village To Provide Quality Food For Our Pets, Diantha V. Ellis
Mercer Law Review
How much does your pet mean to you? In many American households, pets have risen from the status of possessions to the role of family members. For many people, pets have even taken the place of children or are treated as one of the children. For those of us who have pets who we love as family, it is deeply concerning when reports are issued about the dangerous chemicals or toxic levels of vitamins in their food. Reading the recall reports on a food that our dog or cat has trustingly eaten every time we place it in front of …

Social Media Usage During Covid-19: Friend Or Foe?, Claudia Dominique
Honors Theses
College students experience more stress and are more vulnerable to mental illness as compared to the general population. Both COVID-19 and social media usage have shown to be stressors that augment this pre-existing issue. The goal of the current study is to highlight the relationship between the social media usage and mental health of college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing a correlational and longitudinal research design, undergraduate students completed self-report mental health and social media usage measures throughout the semester. Researchers found that both social media usage, anxiety, and depression levels were higher post-pandemic as compared to pre-pandemic. However, …

Human Dignity As A Chameleon, Ariel L. Bendor, Michal Tamir
Human Dignity As A Chameleon, Ariel L. Bendor, Michal Tamir
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
This article offers an innovative argument, according to which courts do not interpret human dignity according to an abstract theoretical position on the nature of the value only, nor subordinate themselves to the subjective purpose of the drafters of a constitution. Thus, courts-whether in the United States, where human dignity is not explicitly mentioned in the Constitution, or in countries where the right is constitutionally enshrined, such as Germany, South Africa, and Israel-interpret and apply human dignity on the basis of the entirety of the provisions of the particular constitution. Human dignity serves as a constitutional chameleon in the sense …

The Dangers Of Being Old In Rural Tanzania: A Call For Interventions For Strengthening Palliative Care In Low-Income Communities, Kahabi Isangula
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Tanzania is currently implementing political reforms that, with time, are expected to improve quality of life among individuals regardless of their age. This improvement in quality of life, consequently prolonged life expectancy implies that the aging population will significantly increase in a few years to come. Research projects that the number of people aged 60 years and above will increase from the current 4- percent to 10-percent of the total population by 2050 (United Republic of Tanzania, 2003; Kivelia and Kirway, 2011; Morrissette andWane, 2012). The projected increase suggests that the older population will be at a disadvantage because majority …

An accurate understanding of the changes in height and weight of children with age is critical to the development of models predicting drug concentrations in children (i.e., physiologically-based pharmacokinetic models). However, curves describing the growth of a typical population of children may not accurately characterize growth of children with various conditions, such as obesity. Therefore, to develop height and weight versus age growth curves for youth who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, we extracted data from electronic medical records. Robust nonlinear models were parameterized to the equations describing height and weight versus age as defined by the Centers for …

Exploration Of The Role Of Neighborhood Residential Segregation By Race And Ethnicity In Obesity Risk Among School-Aged, Melissa L. Fair
Theses and Dissertations
Youth obesity prevalence remains high, despite decades of intervention. Grounded in the social ecological model, neighborhoods and schools are important settings in addressing the complex systems that influence obesity. Contributing to disparities, by race/ethnicity, Black and Hispanic youth are more likely to live in segregated neighborhoods and attend segregated schools, which are also more likely to have high rates of poverty and are less likely to have high quality nutrition and built environments. Leveraging data from local school district (district and state department of education) and national datasets (ACS, Childhood Opportunity Index 2.0), this study examined the associations between school …
Epigenetic Pathogenesis Of Neurological Disorders In Utero And Considerations For Genetic Counseling, Lauren Juga
Epigenetic Pathogenesis Of Neurological Disorders In Utero And Considerations For Genetic Counseling, Lauren Juga
Senior Honors Theses
Epigenetic modifications are a major focus of study in the pathogenesis of many disorders regarding metabolism, aging, neurodevelopment, and neurodegeneration. Epigenetic mechanisms are present throughout life but are especially vital to guiding fetal development. The precise timing of gene activation and deactivation guides stem cell differentiation through each embryonic stage. After exposure to environmental stimuli, gene expression can be altered by transcription factors, resulting in observable phenotypes and even pathology. Here, the epigenetic mechanisms responsible for the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders are explored in response to environmental perturbations in utero. The present goal is to identify correlations between …
Prevalence Of Bacillus Licheniformis On Northern Saw-Whet Owls (Aegolius Acadicus), Lauren Benedict
Prevalence Of Bacillus Licheniformis On Northern Saw-Whet Owls (Aegolius Acadicus), Lauren Benedict
Senior Honors Theses
Birds are hosts to a variety of bacteria and fungi including some that are keratinolytic. These feather degrading bacteria, including Bacillus licheniformis, are capable of degrading β-keratin which is a major component of feathers. While there is little evidence to indicate that feather degrading bacteria are capable of degrading feathers on live birds, there is ample evidence to indicate that many bird species experience altered feather coloration. There is significant variation in the reported prevalence of B. licheniformis on birds with percentages ranging from 6.7% to 99%. This study sought to provide further support for an overall prevalence of …
Prenatal Drug Exposure And Its Effects On Fetal Development: Clinical And Health Education Implications, Johanna Marie Olo Tapangan
Prenatal Drug Exposure And Its Effects On Fetal Development: Clinical And Health Education Implications, Johanna Marie Olo Tapangan
Senior Honors Theses
Prenatal drug exposure is a common clinical phenomenon in pregnancy cases. Pregnancy is a fragile period of time for both the mother and the fetus. Therefore, strict drug regulation is important to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the developing fetus. Certain drugs, once thought to be safe, have been found to have detrimental effects on the normal development of functioning organ systems in the fetus. Current research has identified drugs that when taken during pregnancy can result in the onset of fetal physical abnormalities, impaired brain development, and disrupted organogenesis and organ function. Thalidomide, losartan, opioids, alcohol, and caffeine …

Caregiver Mental Health Screening In A Pediatric Feeding Clinic, Dana Bakula, Laura Slosky, Kelsey Dean, Ann M. Davis, Sarah T. Edwards
Posters
Introduction: One in four adults have mental health (MH) problems. Caregivers of children with feeding problems are at even higher risk for mental health (MH) problems, including depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress. Caregiver MH concerns have a negative impact on caregiver and child quality of life and are specifically linked to suboptimal child feeding practices. Thus, it is critical to identify caregiver MH problems in pediatric feeding settings. However, it can be challenging to comprehensively screen for caregiver MH in a busy pediatric feeding clinic. This emphasizes the importance of a feasible and brief method for screening caregiver MH. Methods: …

Many baseball pitching studies have used inverse dynamics to assess throwing arm kinetics as high and repetitive kinetics are thought to be linked to pitching injuries. However, prior studies have not used participant-specific body segment inertial parameters (BSIPs), which are thought to improve analysis of high-acceleration motions and overweight participants. This study's objectives were to (1) calculate participant-specific BSIPs using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measures, (2) compare inverse dynamic calculations of kinetics determined by DXA-calculated BSIPs (full DXA-driven inverse dynamics) against kinetics using the standard inverse dynamics approach with scaled BSIPs (scaled inverse dynamics), and (3) examine associations between …

This study aims to determine the extent of the implementation of the Social Assistance Program for Persons with Disabilities (ASPD) and the impact on the fulfillment of basic needs. Individuals with severe disabilities cannot be rehabilitated and are unable to carry out daily activities such as eating, drinking, and bathing, therefore need the help of others. They are unable and do not have a steady source of income either from themselves or from others to meet basic needs. Families are their life foundation because they are unable to access key services such as health care programs and food distribution, due …
Increasing Ocean Environment Awareness In Land-Locked Middle School Students, Krista Espelien
Increasing Ocean Environment Awareness In Land-Locked Middle School Students, Krista Espelien
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Abstract The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has defined ocean literacy as an “understanding of the ocean’s influence on you — and your influence on the ocean” (NOAA, 2013). Students are future decision-makers and engaging them in ocean literacy is vital as they will continue to be confronted with climate change throughout their lives. This capstone project addresses the question: How can experiential education on the topic of coral reef restoration increase the investment of land-locked, middle school students in marine conservation? This document identifies how ocean literacy and marine science topics are poorly represented in school curricula despite …
Women's Representation And Its Impact On Global Female Physical Security, Sydnee D. Pottebaum
Women's Representation And Its Impact On Global Female Physical Security, Sydnee D. Pottebaum
Honors Thesis
The historic marginalization of women has left gaps in women’s representation and has damaged the level of protection afforded to women around the world. By examining the origins of female marginalization inside and outside of politics and female legislative behavior and style, I argue that the percentage of seats held by women in government conditionally impacts global female physical security. This study examines the impact of the percentage of seats held by women in the lower house (or single house) of government in 2010 on physical security. Physical security is operationalized into six dependent variables: the homicide rate among females, …
