Technology Methods In The Bariatric Postoperative Follow-Up Phase Benchmark Study, Haley Rogers
Technology Methods In The Bariatric Postoperative Follow-Up Phase Benchmark Study, Haley Rogers
MSN Capstone Projects
Diet and exercise seem to be the safer option for weight loss, but many individuals struggle to achieve maximum weight loss with these methods. Bariatric surgery has become a growing trend to help combat the obesity epidemic that society is now facing. A large increase in sleeve gastrectomy has been utilized and in 2013, there was a documented 468, 609 cases of bariatric surgery performed worldwide (Sherf Dagan et al., 2017). Bariatric surgery has been shown to provide the greatest level of weight loss when compared to traditional methods that include diet and exercise (Khan, 2016). Weight regain has been …

BACKGROUND: Severity of illness (SOI) is an All Patients Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR DRG) modifier based on comorbidity capture. Tracking SOI helps hospitals improve performance and resource distribution. Furthermore, benchmarking SOI plays a key role in Quality Improvement (QI) efforts such as Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) programs. The current SOI system highly relies on the 3 M APR DRG grouper that is updated annually, making it difficult to track severity longitudinally and benchmark against hospitals with different patient populations. Here, we describe an alternative SOI scoring system that is grouper-independent and that can be tracked longitudinally.

The Role Of Coastal Resource Stability In The Transition To Agriculture, Soconusco, Mexico, Asia Alsgaard
Anthropology ETDs
Around the world, the transition to agriculture happens at different times and under different conditions, sometimes failing to occur at all. I address how risk management strategies, such as Niche Construction tactics, influence human subsistence decision making, both within the context of climate or habitat changes and its converse, stability. I focus on how coastal resource reliance in the Soconusco region, Mexico, may have allowed the Archaic period Chantuto society to continue to rely on aquatic resources even as other groups in the region began relying on maize agriculture. To address this question within the context of stability, I focus …

Measurement Error Modeling Applied To Phylogenetic Inference And Parametric Bootstrap Approach To Multifactor Anova Models With Unequal Variances And Unbalanced Data, Sarah Katharine Alver
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
This dissertation includes two main topics. The first uses measurement error modeling to improve upon an existing method of inferring species trees from gene trees that were estimated with error. The second involves extending the parametric bootstrap (PB) approach, which was previously shown to work well for one- and two-way analysis of variance models with unequal variance and unbalanced data (heteANOVA), to multi-factor heteANOVA models. An overall framework using PB is presented. For each topic, the underlying theory is shown, and simulations and applications to empirical data are presented, demonstrating improvement over earlier methods. The proposed species tree inference method …

BACKGROUND: Higher levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity have been associated with a lower risk of diabetes, but less is known about how daily step counts (steps/day) are associated with diabetes risk. Therefore, we examined the association of steps/day and step intensity with incident diabetes.
METHODS: We included 6634 adults from the population-based prospective cohort Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) (2008-2017). Cox proportional hazard models that accounted for complex survey design and sampling weights were used to estimate the association of baseline accelerometer-assessed steps/day and step intensity with 6-year risk of incident diabetes as hazard ratios (HR) and 95% …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the closure of schools and may have inadvertently resulted in decreased physical activity for youth. Emerging evidence suggests that school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic could have hastened the inactivity of youth, possibly due to a lack of structure outside of school and increased access to sedentary activities.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess changes in physical activity from pre-school closure (before the pandemic) to post-school closure (during the pandemic) among youth in spring 2020.
METHODS: This study used a natural experimental design; youth were enrolled in a physical …

Using Movement To Infer Critical Life History Events In Mule Deer: Parturition And Natal Dispersal, Tabitha A. Hughes
Theses and Dissertations
The advent of GPS tracking technology has revolutionized the field of wildlife research. The ability to obtain fine-scale location data from collared animals allows for increased understanding of life-history events that have previously been difficult to research. An excellent candidate species for telemetry-based research is mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). Mule deer are an important species economically due to their position as a harvested species. Additionally, they play an important role in the ecosystems they occupy; therefore information regarding important life history events would improve conservation and management efforts for this species. Our objectives were to use GPS tracking technology to …
Localized Heat Therapy Improves Mitochondrial Function In Human Skeletal Muscle, Erik D. Marchant
Localized Heat Therapy Improves Mitochondrial Function In Human Skeletal Muscle, Erik D. Marchant
Theses and Dissertations
Physical activity results in various types of stress in skeletal muscle including energetic, oxidative, and heat stress. Acute exposure to stress impairs skeletal muscle mitochondrial function. In contrast, chronic intermittent exposure to mild stress through exercise training results in increased mitochondrial content and respiratory capacity. While oxidative and energetic stress have received much attention regarding their long-term effect on skeletal muscle mitochondria, heat stress is not well understood. The purpose of this work was to investigate the effects of localized heat therapy on human skeletal muscle mitochondria, and to compare these effects to those of high-intensity interval exercise training. To …

Convective drying refers to one of the energy-intensive processes used in chemical, woodworking, food and other industries. Therefore, in modern conditions, when there is a growing shortage and an increase in energy tariffs, it is important to develop and apply new effective methods of drying wet materials in industrial production, create high-performance drying equipment, improve the operation of existing dryers, which will contribute to the rational use of natural resources, reduce the cost of finished products and increase the competitiveness of production. Root crops are plants in which nutrients are concentrated in tubers or roots. Jerusalem artichoke refers to sugar-containing …
Older Adults Home-Based Care In Cairo: Asset Mapping Towards Community Development, Yomna El-Taweel
Older Adults Home-Based Care In Cairo: Asset Mapping Towards Community Development, Yomna El-Taweel
Theses and Dissertations
The health and economic consequences of the rapid growth of the older adults’ population above 60 have led to new and more flexible forms of care, including home-based care. In Cairo, Egypt, there seems to be a high demand and preference for home-based care services over other care services like nursing homes. From a policy makers’ perspective, older adults’ needs are sometimes approached in a deficit-oriented way. This might contribute to the disempowerment of older adults and make them feel like people with needs that can only be met by external support. This mixed-method study aimed to contribute to the …

The Impact Of Dietary Fiber On Breast Cancer Incidence, Peyton North
The Impact Of Dietary Fiber On Breast Cancer Incidence, Peyton North
Epsilon Sigma at-Large Research Conference
Abstract
Introduction & Background
The role of dietary fiber in breast cancer etiology remains unclear. A negative correlation may be due to fiber’s ability to stave off obesity and aid in the extraction of serum estrogen, two known risk factors for the disease. Effects may differ by source, and type, of fiber. Most of the data available is from research with non-Hispanic white women. However, fiber intake may vary significantly across cultures.
Purpose Statement & Question
The research sought to investigate whether an increased intake of dietary fiber was associated with a corresponding decrease in the incidence of breast cancer. …
Enhancing Melatonin Secretion: The Methodical Consumption Of Tryptophan From Whole Cow’S Milk To Regulate Sleep Quality In Individuals Aged 18-30 With Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder, Shraddha Patel
Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference
Young adults in the United States are increasingly affected by DSPD (delayed sleep-wake phase disorder), a circadian rhythm disorder that delays evening sleep and morning wake times. Although medicinal supplements have shown to produce effective results on sleep induction, they come with unwanted side-effects. A review of the literature on clinical nutrition and endocrinology suggests that dietary alterations through the timed consumption of tryptophan-abundant whole cow’s milk could be a supplemental means of improving sleep quality. Studies on chrono nutrition indicate that dietary components absorbed by the bloodstream can change the circadian schedule of melatonin secretion from the pineal gland, …

Spotted Knapweed (Centaurea Stoebe) Pollen Use-Availability By Bumble Bees In Western Montana, Rustin Bielski
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
Northwest Montana (United States) also known as the last best place, is one of the most pristine habitats for bumble bees, as well as other keystone pollinators. Though, due to anthropogenic influences, wildflower populations in recent years have been fragmented and captivated by exotic invasive plants, which will likely alter and reduce the fecundity of these pollinator species. In Montana, Centaurea stoebe (Spotted Knapweed) has been a very prolific non-native plant due to its ability to displace entire native plant populations. Pollen, due to its nutritional properties, is the most important resource to bumble bees. While some invasive forbs may …

Nonhuman primates (NHP) are particularly important for modeling infections with viruses that do not naturally replicate in rodent cells. Zika virus (ZIKV) has been responsible for sporadic epidemics, but in 2015 a disseminated outbreak of ZIKV resulted in the World Health Organization declaring it a global health emergency. Since the advent of this last epidemic, several NHP species, including the baboon, have been utilized for modeling and understanding the complications of ZIKV infection in humans; several health issues related to the outcome of infection have not been resolved yet and require further investigation. This study was designed to validate, in …
