Background:

The American healthcare system spends a large amount of economic and human resources on fighting acute sepsis. Even with years of research, mortality rates remain high. Reducing mortality outcomes from sepsis by elucidating biomarkers and the role secondary comorbidities play could assist in sepsis triage and improve outcomes in septic patients. The purpose of this study is to assess to what degree one secondary comorbidity, acute kidney failure, contributes to mortality rates among acutely septic patients in a rural Midwestern hospital located in southwest Missouri.

Methods:

Cohort study assessing septic patients with and without acute kidney injuries (AKIs). ICD10 …

Red Harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex Barbatus F. Smith; Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Preference For Cover Crop Seeds In South Texas, Lilly Victoria Elliott-Vidaurri, Daniella Rivera, Adrian Noval, Robin A. Choudhury, Hannah J. Penn

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Harvester ants often selectively forage seeds, causing these ants to be viewed as pests in agricultural areas where they may forage on crop seeds. While little research has been done on harvester ant preferences for cover crop seeds, grower observations in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) suggest that ants may remove these seeds before germination. We examined red harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex barbatus F. Smith) preferences for cover crop seeds (fescue, oat, sunn hemp, radish, vetch, and wheatgrass) and the effects of a commonly used bacterial seed inoculant. We evaluated relative preferences using seed depots presented to colonies with no …

The Economic And Environmental Impact Of Food Waste, Joe Rice Apr 2022

The Economic And Environmental Impact Of Food Waste, Joe Rice

Academic Festival

Food waste is becoming a bigger and bigger issue. Food waste mainly occurs at two separate stages in the food supply chain. These distinct points in the cycle are called food loss and food waste. It will be important to define these terms going forward. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), food loss refers to unused product from the agricultural sector. Meanwhile, food waste refers to food that has been served but not eaten, spoiled food, or inedible byproducts of food processing. When looking at the food supply chain, food loss occurs in the beginning of the …

The goal of this research paper is to explore the connection between social media and body image as it pertains to the development of eating disorders. While the presence of eating disorders has been around much longer than the internet and social media, it is possible that social media could become another factor contributing to their development in adolescents. …

Global Stratification: What It Is, Why Does It Happen, And What Does It Affect, Sarah Clift Apr 2022

Global Stratification: What It Is, Why Does It Happen, And What Does It Affect, Sarah Clift

Academic Festival

What is global stratification? Global stratification “refers to the unequal distribution of wealth, power, prestige, resources, and influence among the world’s nations. Put more simply, there is an extreme difference between the richest and poorest nations” (University of Minnesota, 2010). According to the United Nations, 40% of the world’s population -or about two billion people- live on less than $2 per day (United Nations Development Programme, 2005). If the world were one nation, its median annual income would only be about $1,700; the richest fifth of the world’s population would have three-fourths of the world’s entire income while the poorest …

The Ethics Of Animal Captivity, Karlee Russo Apr 2022

The Ethics Of Animal Captivity, Karlee Russo

Academic Festival

In the United States, there are more tigers in captivity than in the wild worldwide (“Captive Animals.,” n.d.). How can removing or robbing an animal from its natural habitat be justified in any way? Zoos across America rationalize this action and their simple existence in a variety of ways, none of which are rooted in absolute legitimacy.

Animal captivity, specifically in zoos, raises a controversial debate centered around animal ethics and rights. The examination of zoos and their practices begins with an investigation of animal rights and equality at the fundamental level. Zoos claim to have their purpose rooted in …

Overspending In U.S. Health Care With Regard To Citizenship And Insurance Status And Its Effects On Patients, Primary Care Providers, And The Economy, Dominique Scerbak

Academic Festival

Comparative analysis of healthcare spending in the United States is compared with other high-income nations, and the importance of diving deeper into this problem affecting all residents is revealed. Thus, further analysis is developed, beginning with high costs attributable to outpatient services. The pharmaceutical industry also plays a major role in overspending as drugs are unaffordable to many consumers. Furthermore, insurance coverage difficulties are brought to light as complicated plans and policies make access unaffordable and adequate coverage oftentimes inaccessible. This leads to a discussion on refugee, immigrant, and migrant populations, and barriers to healthcare that make access extremely difficult, …

How To Improve Prenatal Care In Prisons, Amber Fischer Apr 2022

How To Improve Prenatal Care In Prisons, Amber Fischer

Pellets Or Seeds; The Fatty Acid Composition Of Three Commercially Produced Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia Guttata) Diets And What They Provide Females For Egg Laying., Katrina Tessier

Academic Festival

Maternal nutrition of birds prior to egg formation impacts the quantity and quality of eggs produced by the mother. More specifically, the amount and type of micronutrients, i.e. amino acids and fatty acids, in the diet can impact the micronutrients found in the eggs. Thus, diet composition can have lasting impacts on the development and overall health of the chicks. However, much of what is known about the impact of specific fatty acids in the maternal diet on egg composition is from studies on laying hens and not on wild birds. Furthermore, although most avian research on passerine birds use …

Why Low Socioeconomic Status Negatively Affects Language Development, Emily Marquis Apr 2022

Why Low Socioeconomic Status Negatively Affects Language Development, Emily Marquis

Academic Festival

It is common for human beings to communicate their needs, wants, ideas, and thoughts through the use of language, so it is crucial that language is developed properly. However, there are many factors that may influence the typical process of language development. Low socioeconomic status has a negative impact on language development because certain qualities of living in low socioeconomic status create an adverse environment for developing critical language skills. Some factors of low socioeconomic status that impact the development of language include poor housing conditions, lower and lesser quality interactions with caregivers, and a lack of access to resources. …

Journal of International Women's Studies

With regard to SGD-5, this study attempts to examine the association between entrepreneur’s gender and their entrepreneurial motivation and to discover if entrepreneur’s gender influences the motivation. The study further tries to see if entrepreneurial motivation varies on the grounds of entrepreneur’s gender. Based on a qualitative approach, the study uses interview data of 320 MSME entrepreneurs from Assam, India. Two hypotheses—there is no association between entrepreneur’s gender and the entrepreneurial motivation (H01) and there is no significant difference between the mean rank of male and female entrepreneurs with respect to their motivational factors (H02)—are postulated and tested using Chi-Square …

Health Inequalities And Inequities And The Relation To Amputations And Prosthetic Devices, Morgan Rogers Apr 2022

Health Inequalities And Inequities And The Relation To Amputations And Prosthetic Devices, Morgan Rogers

Academic Festival

Health inequalities and inequities adversely impact minoritized groups. These inequalities and inequities are apparent when examining the healthcare system, specifically amputation rates among minoritized groups. For example, African Americans comprise 13% of the United States population; however, they account for 25% of those who suffer from limb loss in the United States (Bush & Girijala, 2018). More than half of amputations can be avoided with preventative care, but unfortunately, high healthcare costs deter minoritized groups from seeking this care. Due to the lack of health insurance combined with the high costs of prosthetics devices, many individuals within the minoritized population …

Learning To View Nonpharmacological Care As Equivalent To Medications In The Treatment Of Babies Born With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Sarah Dupuis

Academic Festival

The new changes in hospitals that have come in reaction to an increase in maternal opioid use have positively changed the care of infants going through withdrawal. The positive change is for both the benefit of the infant and the benefit of the hospital. By training health care workers to view nonpharmacological treatment as equivalent to medication in the treatment of the infants born with NAS, these newborns will have a speedier recovery that decreases the length that they stay in the hospital. Therefore, by decreasing the infant’s hospital length of stay, hospital costs also decrease. The medical treatments that …

Children’s developmental phases have been construed over the last year by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The early years in children’s development are very important because every action affects their brain and stimulates a reaction for the rest of their lives. The sudden change in children’s daily lives affects their understanding of how a normal day should be. Children are developing anxiety disorders which has led to a spike in childhood obesity because of the lack of structure in the child’s day. Children are trying to grasp an understanding of the virus in correlation to the family’s financial status …

Living In A Plant-Based World, Charlotte Huntington Apr 2022

Living In A Plant-Based World, Charlotte Huntington

Academic Festival

A world without meat seems like such a distant idea. What about a world with meat produced in labs? Or a world or meat like products? A plant-based world doesn't mean no more burgers, it just means no burgers produced in ways that harm humanity. This essay argues that by eliminating the consumption and production of meat globally, humanity can expand lifespans and prevent future catastrophic natural disasters. The negative effects of meat production are the greenhouse gases emitted, land usage and deforestation, the water wasted, the food used for livestock that could be used for human consumption. Without meat …

Dietary Fasting As A Treatment For Type 2 Diabetes, John Fenkart

Academic Festival

More than thirty-seven million Americans have diabetes, approximately 95% of those thirty-seven million have type 2 diabetes. That correlates to roughly 1 in 10 Americans that suffer from type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that has detrimental effects on the way one’s body metabolizes glucose; specifically, type 2 diabetes is caused by the body’s resistance to insulin. Currently, there is a limited variety of type 2 diabetes interventions, which almost always involve injections of insulin. These injections are expensive, and painful, and treat the disease itself rather than the person by addressing the symptoms of type …

Horticultural Therapy In Prison Populations, Abigail Larson Apr 2022

Horticultural Therapy In Prison Populations, Abigail Larson

Academic Festival

Horticultural therapy (HT) is best defined as the use of plants and plant-based activities with a goal of rehabilitation and healing oneself (Rutgers, n.d.). While the benefits have been known for decades through research with war veterans and elderly people in nursing homes, recent studies have been exploring the assets it can provide for prison populations. Prisons in the US are notorious for their bad conditions, including shortages of mental health treatment, high costs, and lack of access to fresh fruits and vegetables for the inmates. If such a thing exists that can provide a solution for all of these …

Acute Esophageal Necrosis Following Acetaminophen Overdose: An Unreported Cause Of Black Esophagus, Karolina N. Dziadkowiec, Renuka Reddy, Akiva J. Marcus

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Acute esophageal necrosis (AEN), also known as “black esophagus” or Gurvits syndrome, is an uncommon finding with an unclear etiology and pathogenesis. This condition often presents as an upper gastrointestinal bleed in older men with multiple comorbidities. AEN is characterized by circumferential black, necrotic mucosa in the esophagus. We present a case of AEN following acetaminophen overdose. The patient was ultimately discharged from the hospital with oral omeprazole twice daily, a clear liquid diet, and a recommendation for follow-up in the outpatient setting for repeat EGD in 4 to 6 weeks. Acetaminophen overdose, although a rare cause, must be considered …

A Fusion Of Microscopy Technique In Human Coprolite Analysis: The Dyck Cliff Dwelling And The Arid West Cave, William Darwin Hertzel

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

In the two papers that comprise this thesis, I will discuss the dietary complexes of two separate Southwestern archaeological sites excavated in the 20th century through the medium of coprolite analysis. The fusion of microscopy techniques in this project expands the capability of observation and identification of microremains and their use in reconstructing the dietary habits of past peoples. I intend to highlight the value of integrating three separate methods of microscopy for the identification of diet and any practices for using that information to narrow down a coprologically unstudied site location for samples of lost provenience. Additionally, this project …

Incremental Hemodialysis: What We Know So Far, Vivek Soi, Mark D. Faber, Ritika Paul

Nephrology Articles

Traditionally, patients that develop progressive chronic kidney disease in need of kidney replacement therapy are prescribed thrice weekly in-center hemodialysis sessions at the beginning of therapy. This empiric prescription is based on historic trials that were comprised of mostly prevalent patients. Incremental hemodialysis is the process of performing transition, mimicking the progressive nature of kidney disease. Adding clearance contributions from residual kidney function is the standard of care with peritoneal dialysis but has not routinely been employed with hemodialysis. Accounting for residual kidney function accompanied by improvement in adjuvant pharmacotherapy, such as newer potassium binding agents and dietary modification, can …

Feasibility Of A Hip Flexion Feedback System For Controlling Exercise Intensity And Tibia Axial Peak Accelerations During Treadmill Walking, Nuno Oliveira, Chuang-Yuan Chiu

Faculty Publications

The ability to meet high exercise intensities is limited by the increased risk of injury in some clinical populations. Previous studies have linked large tibia peak positive accelerations resulting from running to increased risk of developing lower-extremity injury. The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility of using a hip flexion feedback system (HFFS) to meet and maintain different exercise intensities while maintaining low tibia axial accelerations. Ten healthy participants were tested on a HFFS test and an independent walking/running test to meet exercise intensities of 40% and 60% of heart rate reserve (HRR). During the HFFS test, …
