Optimizing Intrapartum Outcomes For Midwifery Patients With Obesity, Anna Shields May 2022

Optimizing Intrapartum Outcomes For Midwifery Patients With Obesity, Anna Shields

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Existing literature has established that laboring people with obesity have poorer intrapartum outcomes compared to their lower weight counterparts, including elevated c-section rates which increase with increasing BMI. People with obesity are at increased risk for complications related to surgical birth so optimizing chances for vaginal delivery is of utmost importance yet professional guidelines about labor management are lacking. Research has established that people with obesity have longer times in labor especially early labor, need more labor stimulating medications and have physiologic changes that alter the labor process compared to lower weight people. Literature on the impact of midwifery care …

Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) are abundant carbohydrates fundamental to infant health and development. Although these oligosaccharides were discovered more than half a century ago, their biosynthesis in the mammary gland remains largely uncharacterized. Here, we use a systems biology framework that integrates glycan and RNA expression data to construct an HMO biosynthetic network and predict glycosyltransferases involved. To accomplish this, we construct models describing the most likely pathways for the synthesis of the oligosaccharides accounting for >95% of the HMO content in human milk. Through our models, we propose candidate genes for elongation, branching, fucosylation, and sialylation of HMOs. Our …

Increased Prevalence Of Parenteral Nutrition-Associated Liver Disease In Neonates With Congenital Heart Disease, Yasasvhinie Santharam May 2022

Increased Prevalence Of Parenteral Nutrition-Associated Liver Disease In Neonates With Congenital Heart Disease, Yasasvhinie Santharam

Research Days

Background: A life-sustaining therapy, use of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) allows for meeting nutritional needs of low birth weight, premature, or otherwise complex infants with conditions that prevent feeding through the GI tract. However, 40-60% of infants on long-term TPN have been shown to develop parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease (PNALD)1 , a serious condition characterized by cholestatic jaundice, steatosis, and hepatic fibrosis. Given these risks, providers must account for risk of hepatic injury when prescribing TPN, including attributes of gestational age, infection, surgical and diagnosis history2-6 . Yet with a multifactorial pathogenesis, significant heterogeneity in PNALD incidence still occurs. Looking …

Organized Savagery: Legitimization Of British Occupation In The Post-Ottoman State, Jamie M. Emerson May 2022

Organized Savagery: Legitimization Of British Occupation In The Post-Ottoman State, Jamie M. Emerson

The Purdue Historian

The Great War of 1914-1918 saw the internment of hundreds of thousands of prisoners of war, captured and maintained by the hand of their enemy. Allegations and accounts of ill-treatment under the enemy’s care abounded during and after the war. Leading up to the Peace Conference of 1919, negotiators chose to account for the suffering of these prisoners in their demands for indemnities and reparations. This paper assesses how the British Parliament and press used stories about the suffering of British and Indian prisoners of war in Ottoman internment camps as a means to delegitimize Ottoman rule and legitimize British …

Role Of Fasting In Caloric Restriction Improved Glucose Tolerance, Makayla M. Dillon May 2022

Role Of Fasting In Caloric Restriction Improved Glucose Tolerance, Makayla M. Dillon

ETD Archive

The Caloric Restriction (CR) diet in mammals has been shown to increase longevity and prevent metabolic disorders. Some of the benefits of CR include improved glucose homeostasis, namely improvements in glucose tolerance. Mice on the CR diet have a 30% reduction in food provided, as well as a fasting period between meals as they are only fed once a day. Hence the benefits of CR stem from both fasting and reduced calorie intake. In this study, we investigated if the fasting component of CR is responsible for the benefits of this diet in improving glucose homeostasis. In particular, we used …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Vaccines have generally been developed with limited insight into their molecular impact. While systems vaccinology enables characterization of mechanisms of action, these tools have yet to be applied to infants, who are at high risk of infection and receive the most vaccines. Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) protects infants against disseminated tuberculosis (TB) and TB-unrelated infections via incompletely understood mechanisms. We employ mass-spectrometry-based metabolomics of blood plasma to profile BCG-induced infant responses in Guinea-Bissau in vivo and the US in vitro. BCG-induced lysophosphatidylcholines (LPCs) correlate with both TLR-agonist- and purified protein derivative (PPD, mycobacterial antigen)-induced blood cytokine production in vitro, raising the …
