Improving Care And Licensing Standards And Oversight In America's Zoos, Hannah Willis
Improving Care And Licensing Standards And Oversight In America's Zoos, Hannah Willis
Honors Theses
Since 1966, the Animal Welfare Act has been the official federal legislation passed to provide care standards and regulations for publicly exhibited animals, specifically exotic animals within zoos; however, in an age of major advocacy for improved animal welfare standards for all animals, the AWA has remained fairly stagnant in its guidelines for animal exhibitors. Through numerous articles, documentaries, and TV shows, specific zoos and animal exhibitors have shown many Americans that there seems to be little to no governmental oversight over zoos that have engaged in poor animal care or those engaging in often dangerous and cruel animal contact …
Assessment Of Motivation In Human Anatomy And Physiology Students, Mary Whitehead
Assessment Of Motivation In Human Anatomy And Physiology Students, Mary Whitehead
Honors Theses
Motivation is the key to success in difficult science courses such as Human Anatomy and Physiology. Students may possess intrinsic motivation, or motivation for enjoyment, extrinsic motivation, or motivation for a reward, or amotivation, a lack of motivation at all. The goal of this experiment was to identify better ways of helping students succeed in Human Anatomy and Physiology (HAP) at the University of Mississippi, determine when motivational efforts seem to decrease during the semester, and identify how to better develop intrinsic motivation in students. There was a significant relationship between many of the student’s survey responses to their exam …
A Study Of Dextran As A Macromolecular Crowding Agent, Katherine Morgan
A Study Of Dextran As A Macromolecular Crowding Agent, Katherine Morgan
Honors Theses
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the hereditary material in all living organisms. According to the Watson and Crick model, DNA exists as two long strands coiled into a double helix. However, DNA has been found to have the potential to exist in secondary forms known as G-Quadruplexes and i-motifs. I-motifs (intercalated-motif or iM) are formed under acidic conditions when sets of cytosines pair with protonated cytosines and are looped around each other. The pKa value for iMs in dilute solutions is approximately 6.5, but iMs can potentially exist at a higher, physiological pH value under crowded conditions. Within the interior of …

An Exploratory Look Into The Effects Of Mississippi's Population Decline On Rural Dental Care, Allen Bailey Saffold
An Exploratory Look Into The Effects Of Mississippi's Population Decline On Rural Dental Care, Allen Bailey Saffold
Honors Theses
Literature reviews and interviews with dentists working in rural Mississippi counties examined the effects of population decline on rural dental care in Mississippi. With the state’s continual population decline, loss of industry follows a loss of people. Through a cascade of effects, this can further reduce underserved areas’ access to dental care. In order to address the issue of rural Mississippi continuing to be underserved, policies need to be implemented that will make rural practice at least enticing if not desirable.

Visceral Adipose Tissue Remodeling In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Cachexia: The Role Of Activin A Signaling, Pauline Xu
Theses & Dissertations
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is currently the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States and is projected to become the second leading cause by the year 2030. Prognosis for patients with metastatic disease remains dismal, with cachexia as a main contributor to the low survival rate. Emerging reports indicate that PDAC patients display distinct phenotypes of cachexia development, with either adipose tissue loss preceding skeletal muscle wasting or loss of only adipose tissue. While muscle wasting has been the most frequently studied mechanism in cachexia research, changes in adipose tissue are increasingly understood as important components of …
Modulating Cellular Senescence To Improve Age-Associated Wound Healing Impairment, Upasana Niyogi
Modulating Cellular Senescence To Improve Age-Associated Wound Healing Impairment, Upasana Niyogi
Theses & Dissertations
Impaired tissue repair and regenerative ability in the aged is a major socio-economic and clinical problem. One of the likely factors associated with poor wound healing is the presence of lingering senescent cells in the wound sites. Failure to eliminate these cells has been associated with inadequate healing, excessive scarring, and abnormal skin stiffening. Thus, the objective of our study was to test interventional strategies to mitigate the negative effect of senescent cells. We hypothesized that reducing senescent cell burden and promoting non-senescent cell functionality will improve wound healing with age.
We developed a 3D in vitro senescent fibroblast populated …

Tourniquet-Induced Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury, Junliang Qian
Tourniquet-Induced Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury, Junliang Qian
Theses & Dissertations
Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) is a pathological condition characterized by an initial restriction of blood supply to an organ followed by subsequent restoration of reperfusion associated with exacerbation of tissue damage. For pre-hospital emergency situations and surgical procedures, tourniquet or femoral artery ligation are widely used to stop extremity hemorrhage or create a bloodless operating field. To fully evaluate the underlying mechanisms in IR pathophysiology and potential therapeutic options, we compared tourniquet- and femoral artery ligation-induced IR injuries in the hindlimb of mice. We found that tourniquet/IR-induced acute hindlimb injuries are more severe than those induced by femoral artery ligation/IR, including alteration …

Regulation Of Pancreatic Cancer Progression By Micronutrients, Chunbo He
Regulation Of Pancreatic Cancer Progression By Micronutrients, Chunbo He
Theses & Dissertations
Cancer cells rely on altered metabolism to support their uncontrolled proliferation under harsh conditions. Understanding the mechanisms of how metabolic alterations support tumor growth may provide a way to enhance current therapies. Vitamins are micronutrients that our body needs in small quantities but are essential for health maintenance. A number of metabolic processes relevant to cancer initiation and progression are also regulated by vitamins. Here, our studies showed that pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cells display an aberrant metabolism of vitamin B6 (VB6) to support their fast proliferation. VB6 was highly demanded and rapidly metabolized by PDAC cells. Depletion of VB6 …
