The Effects Of A Carbohydrate Hydrogel Beverage On Gastrointestinal Symptoms And Running Performance In Comparison To Conventional Carbohydrate Beverages, Nicholas Minichiello May 2022

The Effects Of A Carbohydrate Hydrogel Beverage On Gastrointestinal Symptoms And Running Performance In Comparison To Conventional Carbohydrate Beverages, Nicholas Minichiello

Masters Theses, 2020-current

PURPOSE: The utilization of hydrogel technology allows carbohydrate beverages to form a gel in the acidic environment of the stomach, potentially enhancing gastric emptying. However, few studies have researched the effects of these beverages on gastrointestinal (GI) tolerance and exercise performance; there is minimal data in a variety of exercise conditions and/or beverage ingestion rates. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of a 80 g/h of maltodextrin-fructose hydrogel (MF-H) beverage versus conventional carbohydrate sources on GI symptoms and running performance. METHODS: eight distance runners (26 ± 5 y; VO2max = 65 ± 7 ml/kg/min) …

The Effect Of Intensity And Duration Of Verification Stages On The Efficacy Of Vo2max Testing, Andrew Foster

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Purpose: To determine if changing the length of the recovery stage influences the effectiveness, or ability to confirm maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), of the verification phase and if the initial intensity of the stage has an impact on its effectiveness. Methods: 27 subjects (20 males and 7 females) performed four separate VO2max tests separated by at least 48 hours. For each initial graded exercise test, starting speed was 3.0 mph and increased by 0.5 mph every minute until 6.0 mph was reached. After this point, elevation was increased by 3.0% every minute until volitional exhaustion. VO2 …

Does A Bout Of Acute Resistance Exercise Attenuate The Post-Prandial Lipemic Response To A High Fat Meal In 50-80 Year-Old Adults, Summer Simulcik May 2022

Does A Bout Of Acute Resistance Exercise Attenuate The Post-Prandial Lipemic Response To A High Fat Meal In 50-80 Year-Old Adults, Summer Simulcik

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Background: A single high-fat meal (HFM) is known to elevate blood lipid levels above what is normal, resulting in postprandial lipemia (PPL). Chronic hyperlipemia has been associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) development. Current physical activity (PA) guidelines recommend at least one set of 8-12 repetitions of each exercise to attenuate this risk. Adults older than 50 (OF) years (y) are at an increased risk for cardiometabolic disease compared to younger adults (YA). Aerobic exercise (AE) performed in the pre-prandial period has been observed to attenuate PPL in both OF and YA. However, …

Urbanization Drives Changes In Avian Communities, Which Are Reflected In The Song Of A Vocal Mimic, Jaclyn Tolchin May 2022

Urbanization Drives Changes In Avian Communities, Which Are Reflected In The Song Of A Vocal Mimic, Jaclyn Tolchin

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Urban landscapes present problems for wildlife including highly modified habitat, anthropogenic noise pollution, and competition for suitable habitat. These novel selection pressures can filter species present in urban habitats or result in changes to behavior. Recent studies show that some bird species sing differently (louder, higher pitch, faster) in noisier, urban areas compared to quieter, more rural areas, and that anthropogenic noise alone can exclude species. I investigated how the level of urbanization affects 1) bird species composition, and 2) the assemblage of species that a songbird mimics from the local bird community. I studied gray catbirds, Dumetella carolinensis, across …

Alcohol Impairs Immunometabolism And Promotes Naïve T Cell Differentiation To Pro-Inflammatory Th1 Cd4+ T Cells, Patrick M. Mcternan, Danielle E. Levitt, David A. Welsh, Liz Simon, Robert W. Siggins, Patricia E. Molina May 2022

Alcohol Impairs Immunometabolism And Promotes Naïve T Cell Differentiation To Pro-Inflammatory Th1 Cd4+ T Cells, Patrick M. Mcternan, Danielle E. Levitt, David A. Welsh, Liz Simon, Robert W. Siggins, Patricia E. Molina

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

CD4+ T cell differentiation to pro-inflammatory and immunosuppressive subsets depends on immunometabolism. Pro-inflammatory CD4+ subsets rely on glycolysis, while immunosuppressive Treg cells require functional mitochondria for their differentiation and function. Previous pre-clinical studies have shown that ethanol (EtOH) administration increases pro-inflammatory CD4+ T cell subsets; whether this shift in immunophenotype is linked to alterations in CD4+ T cell metabolism had not been previously examined. The objective of this study was to determine whether ethanol alters CD4+ immunometabolism, and whether this affects CD4+ T cell differentiation. Naïve human CD4+ T cells were plated on anti-CD3 coated plates with soluble anti-CD28, and …

The Impact Of High- Vs. Low-Load Resistance Training On Measures Of Muscle Activation, Strength, Body Composition, And Hormonal Markers, Marissa Laina Bello May 2022

The Impact Of High- Vs. Low-Load Resistance Training On Measures Of Muscle Activation, Strength, Body Composition, And Hormonal Markers, Marissa Laina Bello

Theses and Dissertations

Resistance training has shifted towards a high- vs low-load training approach. Heavier loads are suggested to maximally recruit motor units and optimize strength adaptations, whereas lower loads stimulate hypertrophy. However, a majority of the research has not used a true strength range when assessing load. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to examine and determine significant differences in strength, body composition, and hormonal markers over nine weeks of high- or low-load resistance training. Secondary purposes of the current investigation were to assess and quantify training load for resistance training using sEMG sensor-embedded compression shorts. 17 recreationally-trained males were randomized …

School of Medicine Publications

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) comprise a group of illnesses marked by memory and behavioral dysfunction that can occur in up to 50% of HIV patients despite adequate treatment with combination antiretroviral drugs. Iron dyshomeostasis exacerbates HIV-1 infection and plays a major role in Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis. In addition, persons living with HIV demonstrate a high prevalence of neurodegenerative disorders, indicating that HAND provides a unique opportunity to study ferroptosis in these conditions. Both HIV and combination antiretroviral drugs increase the risk of ferroptosis by augmenting ferritin autophagy at the lysosomal level. As many viruses and their proteins …

Clock-Linked Genes Underlie Seasonal Migratory Timing In A Diurnal Raptor, Christen M. Bossu, Julie A. Heath, Gregory S. Kaltenecker, Barbara Helm, Kristen C. Ruegg May 2022

Clock-Linked Genes Underlie Seasonal Migratory Timing In A Diurnal Raptor, Christen M. Bossu, Julie A. Heath, Gregory S. Kaltenecker, Barbara Helm, Kristen C. Ruegg

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Seasonal migration is a dynamic natural phenomenon that allows organisms to exploit favourable habitats across the annual cycle. While the morphological, physiological and behavioural changes associated with migratory behaviour are well characterized, the genetic basis of migration and its link to endogenous biological time-keeping pathways are poorly understood. Historically, genome-wide research has focused on genes of large effect, whereas many genes of small effect may work together to regulate complex traits like migratory behaviour. Here, we explicitly relax stringent outlier detection thresholds and, as a result, discover how multiple biological time-keeping genes are important to migratory timing in an iconic …

Estropause, Sex Hormones And Metal Homeostasis In The Mouse Brain, Tianbing Liu, Richard L. Bowen, Andrea C. Wilson, Craig S. Atwood

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Alterations in brain metal ion homeostasis have been reported with aging and are implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. To assess whether age-related changes in hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) hormones might be involved in modulating brain metal ion homeostasis, we treated 7.5-month intact, sham-ovariecomized and ovariectomized C57B6SJL mice with vehicle or leuprolide acetate (for 9-months) to differentiate between whether sex steroids or gonadotropins might modulate brain metal ion concentrations. Unlike other aging mammals, there was no increase in plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations following estropause in mice, suggesting there was sufficient residual production by the follicle depleted …
