An Educational Project On Guidelines Of Treating Respiratory Syncytial Virus And Bronchiolitis In Rural Pediatric Patients, Mallory Revell

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

Bronchiolitis is the leading cause of hospital admission for infants. Eighty percent of bronchiolitis cases are caused by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). While guidelines on the treatment of RSV/bronchiolitis have been published since 2006, the literature reveals that they are not widely followed. After completing a literature review on the current evidence-based treatment guidelines of RSV/bronchiolitis, nurses from a rural hospital in southeast Kansas were educated on these guidelines to improve their knowledge regarding treatments for RSV/bronchiolitis pediatric patients. This study utilized a pretest-posttest design to determine the knowledge gained after the educational presentation. The nurses completed a survey …

Living A More Sustainable Lifestyle: Brand Recommendations And Product Reviews, Alison L. Kramer

Honors Capstones

While current studies are done on individual products, there isn’t a consolidated paper for consumers to use when purchasing everyday items. Consumers don’t have time to do research on things they buy weekly or even monthly. To understand what products are truly sustainable and good for the environment, consumers would have to spend hours researching what products or materials are better than what they currently buy. This paper outlines a set of criteria that will help consumers make informed decisions when it comes to buying everyday products. Consumers can also find a list of product recommendations in this paper.

A Review Of Current Methods In Avian Dietary Analysis And Their Integrated Application To Characterize The Trophic Niche Of Louisiana Waterthrush (Parkesia Motacilla)., Brandon Hoenig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Characterizing a species’ dietary composition presents an avenue to understand many facets of its ecological niche and can provide essential information for the species’ long-term conservation. To date, the vast majority of diet studies have relied on direct identification of prey during foraging observations or from diet samples to characterize the dietary habits of birds. However, advancements in laboratory-based approaches have revolutionized the field of trophic ecology by allowing researchers to indirectly infer dietary habits with higher resolution across greater time scales. Here, I apply two of these laboratory-based techniques, namely DNA metabarcoding and stable isotope analysis, to characterize the …

Soil Mapping By Farmers In A Thai-Lao Village In Northeast Thailand: A Test Of An Ethnopedological Research Method, Sujitra Yodda, Suwit Laohasiriwong, Terry Rambo

Forest and Society

Having farmers draw soil maps of their communities has been frequently advocated as a faster, cheaper alternative to scientific soil surveying in developing countries. However, research on the extent to which farmers share common mental soil maps and the extent to which these match scientific maps is lacking. In this study, 11 Thai-Lao farmers were individually asked to draw maps showing the location of different types of soil in their village, and two groups of four farmers each were assembled to draw soil maps collectively. The maps were very different from each other and the extent to which they matched …

Trophic Ecology Of Sailfish Larvae In The Gulf Of Mexico: An Analysis Of Diet, Prey Availability, Prey Quality, And Influences On Larval Growth, April Hugi May 2022

Trophic Ecology Of Sailfish Larvae In The Gulf Of Mexico: An Analysis Of Diet, Prey Availability, Prey Quality, And Influences On Larval Growth, April Hugi

Master's Theses

The Gulf of Mexico is an important early life habitat for billfishes, whose larvae experience high growth rates despite having highly specialized diets, limited foraging abilities, and oligotrophic offshore habitats. Variability in the recent growth of sailfish larvae was compared to environmental, spatial, diet, prey availability, and fatty acid metrics using data collected from near-surface waters in the northern Gulf of Mexico (2017 - 2019). Larvae exhibited a highly selective feeding strategy in early development and expanded their feeding niche to include larger prey items (calanoid copepods, larval fish) once they reached flexion. Sailfish larvae showed significant positive selection for …

Neoliberalism And Perceptions Of Charitable Food Assistance Recipients, Lucas G. Hopper May 2022

Neoliberalism And Perceptions Of Charitable Food Assistance Recipients, Lucas G. Hopper

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

Previous research has suggested that recipients of charitable food assistance experience stigma and may be seen as undeserving. Neoliberal worldviews have also been identified in discourse around charitable food assistance (CFA) and CFA settings, and tied to stigma and undeservingness. However, there is relatively little research on the context of CFA overall and a paucity of research that has examined the relationship between these factors of CFA perceptions, particularly in individuals who are not directly involved as recipients or volunteers. This study consists of a quantitative survey administered to 266 psychology students at a large university measuring their perceptions of …

Does Nurses Confidence Improve After Attending A Training For Teaching Home Infusion Patients?, Carol Menorah Young Dnp May 2022

Does Nurses Confidence Improve After Attending A Training For Teaching Home Infusion Patients?, Carol Menorah Young Dnp

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Discharge can be a difficult step for patients and their families and a challenging task for nurses. Poor instructions have a negative impact on the patient population. In addition, improper and incomplete discharge information negatively affects the posthospital recovery period and may cause the patient to return to the hospital for the same episode of care. Returning to the hospital emergency room or readmission for the same episode of care will increase the dangers to the patient’s health and recovery plan and increase the cost of individual healthcare. The patient population ranks the quality of discharge information via their responses …

The Pagoda Of The Gods: A Case For Indigenous Karen Sacred Sites As Special Cultural Zones Along Thailand’S Borders, Suwichan Phatthanaphraiwan, Lilly Zeitler, Benjamin Fairfield

Forest and Society

Burgeoning recognition of Indigenous traditional ecological knowledge and livelihood practices have led to ‘Special Cultural Zone’ designations for some traditionally Indigenous lands in Thailand. Simultaneously, the Thai government has designated 10 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) to bolster trade and investments along its borders without acknowledging the pre-existence of Indigenous peoples. SEZs intersect with sites of notable cultural significance, such as Kho Pho Lu (Pagoda of the Gods), a sacred site for Indigenous Karen near Mae Sot in Tak province. Detailed ethnographic and interview findings show the resilience of these sacred sites and embedded ritualistic place-making practices that persist despite a …
