Half The Picture: Word Frequencies Reveal Racial Differences In Clinical Documentation, But Not Their Causes, Jacqueline A Penn, Denis Newman-Griffis
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Clinical notes are the best record of a provider's perceptions of their patients, but their use in studying racial bias in clinical documentation has typically been limited to manual evaluation of small datasets. We investigated the use of computational methods to scale these insights to large, heterogeneous clinical text data. We found significant differences in negative emotional tone and language implying social dominance in clinical notes between Black and White patients, but identified multiple contributing factors in addition to potential provider bias, including mis-categorization of some healthcare vocabulary as emotion-related. We further found that notes for Black patients were significantly …

Management Faculty Publications
Healthy diet and dietary behaviors are key components in prevention of chronic disease and management of chronic illness. Nutritional literacy has been associated with dietary behaviors and consumer choice of healthy foods. Nutritional literacy can be measured, for example, by examining consumer food label use, but current research focuses largely on the Nutrition Facts panel of a food product. Ingredients lists are critical for communicating food composition but are relatively unstudied in existing literature. The goal of this work is to measure the readability of ingredients lists on branded food products in the United States using existing metrics. We examined …

Protozoa play important roles in microbial communities, regulating populations via predation and contributing to nutrient cycling. While amoebae have been identified in acid rock drainage (ARD) systems, our understanding of their symbioses in these extreme environments is limited. Here, we report the first isolation of the amoeba Stemonitis from an ARD environment as well as the genome sequence and annotation of an associated bacterium, Dyella terrae strain Ely Copper Mine, from Ely Brook at the Ely Copper Mine Superfund site in Vershire, Vermont, United States. Fluorescent in situ hybridization analysis showed this bacterium colonizing cells of Stemonitis sp. in addition …

Boerhaave's syndrome is a rare yet serious condition associated with high mortality and morbidity. Diagnosis of this syndrome is usually done with the aid of imaging and prompt management should be initiated to improve the outcomes. Treatment for this syndrome has been mainly surgical since its discovery by Herman Boerhaave; however, multiple endoscopic approaches have been successfully used recently with the advancement of this field. Here, we describe two cases of Boerhaave's syndrome that were endoscopically managed along with a brief literature review of the different endoscopic methods used to manage this syndrome.
Understanding Food Waste Behavior And Ways To Influence Positive Change And Waste Reduction, David Hubinger
Understanding Food Waste Behavior And Ways To Influence Positive Change And Waste Reduction, David Hubinger
Dissertations
Environmental problems such as pollution, climate change, and food waste can be influenced by social attitudes and human behavior. Solutions to address environmental problems involve a series of actions by society and individuals, which can prove difficult to implement because changes induced by pro-environmental behavior often cannot be seen immediately by individuals or may not generate appreciable, direct benefits. The purposes of the quantitative correlational study are threefold: first, examine environmental attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and overall behavioral intent to reduce household consumer food waste among a sample of consumers; second, to examine the extent to which select …

Examining Resilience In Women Living With Hiv/Aids Through A Photo Narrative Lens, Mary Bell
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Women living with HIV/AIDS (WLH) and poverty face numerous challenges to survival. Typically, WLH in the United States have been exposed to more than just a deadly virus; they have often experienced or witnessed drug addiction, poverty, abuse, mental health disorders, homelessness, abandonment, involvement in the sex industry, racism, sexism, prejudice, social injustice, chronic hunger, generational trauma, and violence – community, domestic, cultural, police enforced, etc. The literature reviewed suggests that treating HIV/AIDS requires a holistic approach that pays close attention to the biopsychosocial needs of the individual. In addition to the physical and economic toll the disease takes on …

Empowering Dance Movement Therapy: Implementing A Dance Break Method In Healthcare Systems To Benefit Patients In Eating Disorder Treatment, Pamela C. Caira
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis aimed to explore how implementing dance/movement therapy can empower effective changes in healthcare systems to benefit patients in eating disorder treatment. While other expressive therapy treatments were utilized, dance/movement therapy treatment was met with resistance because the key elements of moving the body could bolster excessive and compulsive exercise as a secondary eating disorder behavior. A Dance Break intervention worked as a therapeutic method of inquiry to investigate how moving the body could support patients in rediscovering their identities without reinforcing eating disorder behaviors. Data was collected through movement observation analysis, arts-based exploration, and verbal discussion. The results …

Dance Movement Therapy For Neurological Development In Ages 0-3: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Anna Rupert
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The effects of movement on neurodevelopment have been studied by many in both the psychology and neuroscience fields. However, there is a lack of research into the specific ways in which movement is being used to affect neurodevelopment and which specific types of movement most benefit neurodevelopment. This study aims to bridge that gap in the literature by investigating how movement impacts neurological development in infants aged 0-3. Research was pulled from peer reviewed journals using Lesley Library, Syracuse University Library, and Google Scholar and synthesized into four key categories: neurodevelopment in infants aged 0-3, impacts of experience and culture …
Dance/Movement Therapy As A Transdisciplinary Approach To Treating Trauma, Destany Schadder
Dance/Movement Therapy As A Transdisciplinary Approach To Treating Trauma, Destany Schadder
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis considers dance/movement therapy as a transdisciplinary approach to treating trauma in the body. It explains what the functions of the brain are, how trauma negatively affects it, and how posttraumatic stress disorder is expressed in both the body and the brain. It discusses multidisplinary approaches, it shows how these approaches leverage the body in treating trauma. Moreover, it demonstrates the benefits and advantages of a dance/movement therapist in supporting individuals who have experienced traumatic events. To achieve these goals, this thesis discusses research by neuroscientists, such as Damassio (1999), who maintain that the body and mind directly affect …
Pool-Based Dance/Movement Therapy With An Elder Population: A Literature Review, Jabyn Cleere
Pool-Based Dance/Movement Therapy With An Elder Population: A Literature Review, Jabyn Cleere
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) is used widely with elders, yet little is known about the sub-field of pool-based therapy. Specific practices in DMT with elders appear in the literature with groups and individuals and uses of props that support issues of balance. While pool-based DMT literature is limited, there is a body of knowledge in related fields that tie closely to the idea of this approach. While implementing treatment in a pool setting may be limiting due to fears or ability, the literature review revealed that using pool DMT would benefit elderly health. Benefits to physical aspects such as balance, muscular …
Survivorship Of Columbian Black-Tailed Deer In A Predator-Free Environment, Grace Hope Barthelmess
Survivorship Of Columbian Black-Tailed Deer In A Predator-Free Environment, Grace Hope Barthelmess
Honors Projects
Future management of Columbian black tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) populations requires an understanding of survivorship and potential drivers of mortality. Little is currently known about the survivorship of O. h. columbianus, specifically in a predator-free environment. Analyzing the survivorship of deer in these contexts may be crucial for wildlife conservation efforts throughout the United States, as it could provide insight into how deer populations may be impacted by lack of population control by predation. Here, I present age analysis of O. h. columbianus based on the cementum annuli of the lower first molar in 489 males …

Moderators To The Effects Of Childhood Traumatic Stress On Childhood Physical Health, Shaneze Gayle Smith
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
According to the United States National Statistics on Child Abuse, in 2017 Child Protective Service agencies in the United States received an estimated 4.1 million referrals involving approximately 7.5 million children. A substantial body of research has revealed that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have detrimental long-term effects on physical health and a large number of health conditions. However, little research exists regarding the effects of childhood maltreatment on childhood physical health. Identifying protective factors such as self-esteem can moderate the effects of ACEs, help children thrive, and potentially lower the risk of a variety of conditions like cardiovascular disease, cancer, …
Improving Salmon Population Restoration Efforts In California's Central Valley Region, Long Kim Doan
Improving Salmon Population Restoration Efforts In California's Central Valley Region, Long Kim Doan
Master's Projects and Capstones
Historically, the rivers draining into California’s Central Valley Region (CCVR) were abundant with Chinook salmon, migrating in four distinct runs throughout every year, including the Sacramento River winter-run & the Central Valley spring-run. Since the advent of the Central Valley Project in the 1930’s, and its 20 federal high rim dams, these salmon runs have become increasingly threatened. Using a comparative analysis research methodology, this Project critically reviews the existing literature to address the research question: how can current practices of Fish Passage Designs (FPDs) and collection-and-transport operations (CTOs) be improved to mitigate impacts created by dams in CCVR? After …
Impact Of Climate Variability On Child Nutrition In Ethiopia, Juan S. Gomez
Impact Of Climate Variability On Child Nutrition In Ethiopia, Juan S. Gomez
Master's Theses
Changes in precipitation and temperature due to climate change have caused a shortage in food productivity leading to an increase in malnutrition outcomes, especially among children in developing countries that are more susceptible to undernutrition outcomes. This study contributes to existing literature studying the impact of climate variability measured by temperature, precipitation, and vegetation index on wasting. Wasting is measured by the weight for height score during the main growing season (Meher) using Demographic and Health Surveys data for five different periods in Ethiopia. Results suggest that lower NDVI outcomes are associated with an increase in the risk of acute …

This project examines California’s journey to pass this Universal School Meals Program (USMP) and explores how such a program can provide equity for students. I produce a legislative history which traces how school meals are funded and regulated at the federal level, California’s public education funding system, their state meal program, the policies which created changes that allowed the USMP to pass, and the legislation of the program itself. Framework presented by Tyack and Cuban …
Impacts Of Sea Ice Loss On Polar Bear Diet, Prey Availability, Foraging Behaviors, And Human-Bear Interactions In The Arctic, Jasmin Chen
Master's Projects and Capstones
Anthropogenic-induced climate change has warmed the Arctic 2-3 times faster than the rest of the world, causing sea ice declines that introduce challenges for specialist species, such as polar bears, in adapting to rapid environmental changes. Comparative and quantitative analyses of three Hudson Bay polar bear subpopulations were used to determine the impacts of sea ice loss on polar bear diet, prey availability, foraging behaviors, and human-bear interactions in the Arctic. The study reveal that Hudson Bay polar bears experience the most severe impacts from sea ice declines, resulting in a 30% population decline. Due to their smaller body size, …

"Los De Abajo Reconstruimos": Zapatismo & Indigenous Gender Transformation, Elizama R. Rodas
Master's Theses
Indigenous women's voices have long been silenced in society, including the academic realm. The brutality of colonization toward Indigenous women's gender and racial identities has kept them isolated and suppressed up to the present time. For the last twenty-seven years, the Ejército Zapatista Liberación Nacional (EZLN) of Chiapas, Mexico, has campaigned against the Eurocentric ideologies that permeated post-colonization and influenced the mistreatment of Indigenous peoples significantly the discrimination of Indigenous women and other non-binary genders outside these Eurocentric definitions. This research aims to determine the effects of colonial gender existence and, through its deconstruction, also examines the destruction of environments. …

Online Yoga For Children With Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders: A Randomized Control Trial, Olivia Hollyer
Online Yoga For Children With Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders: A Randomized Control Trial, Olivia Hollyer
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Functional abdominal pain disorders are characterized by disordered bowel motility and hypersensitivity without organic cause. Children who meet the criteria for functional abdominal pain disorders have difficulty managing abdominal pain due to a lack of effective pharmacotherapeutic options. Several in-person alternative therapies have been beneficial for this population, including yoga. However, access barriers and lack of flexibility in therapy structure result in low adherence. We propose a randomized controlled trial to study the effectiveness of a 12-week online yoga course compared to a treatment-as-usual group on abdominal pain intensity for children with functional abdominal pain disorders. We will measure abdominal …
Time To Surgical Referral In Non-Hispanic White And Black Patients With Primary Hyperparathyroidism, Jordan Lidsky-Everson
Time To Surgical Referral In Non-Hispanic White And Black Patients With Primary Hyperparathyroidism, Jordan Lidsky-Everson
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Primary hyperparathyroidism is the excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone by one or more parathyroid glands, resulting in hypercalcemia. Primary hyperparathyroidism can be safely cured by parathyroidectomy, but there are well-established racial differences in disease burden at the time of parathyroidectomy with Black patients exhibiting greater serum calcium, parathyroid hormone levels and parathyroid gland size compared to non-Hispanic White patients. However, few studies investigate what factors contribute to these differences. We hypothesize that Black patients experience greater time between presentation with hypercalcemia and surgical referral date than non-Hispanic White patients. To test this hypothesis, we will carry out a retrospective review …

A collaborative partnership launched the Great Grocer Project (GGP) in March 2021 in Detroit, Michigan where health inequities, including deaths due to COVID-19, have historically been politically determined and informed by socially entrenched norms. Institutional and structural racism has contributed to a lack of diversity in store ownership among Detroit grocers and limited access to high-quality, affordable healthy foods as well as disparate food insecurity among Detroit residents. The GGP seeks to promote Detroit’s healthy grocers to improve community health and economic vitality through research, programs, and policies that have the potential to advance health equity. A cross-sectional design was …
