Wernicke Korsakoff Syndrome In A Teenage Female As A Complication Of Covid-19, Hannah Skok, Joseph Jabour, Joseph Betcher

Emergency Medicine Articles

Wernicke encephalitis (WE) is usually associated with alcohol use disorder and caused by a deficiency in thiamine. Classic findings include confusion, ataxia, and ophthalmoplegia. This case is a unique presentation of WE in a 14-year-old female related to prior coronavirus disease infection. She had persistent dysgeusia and developed thiamine deficiency. She presented with confusion, ataxia, and changes in speech. She had a prolonged hospitalization but was discharged to an inpatient rehab facility with persistent symptoms. It is prudent to include thiamine deficiency in the differential for patients with any symptoms of WE and a history of nutritional deficiency.

In 1975, four percent of children aged five to nineteen were categorized as overweight or obese. As of 2016, this figure climbed above 18 percent [1]. Researchers at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) want to investigate the effect of overeating in early childhood on later childhood obesity. This research requires collecting feeding pattern data on infants, which proves challenging. Parents cannot be relied on to regularly collect clean data due to factors including work schedule, multitasking, and general exhaustion. Thus, we have developed a tool to automatically collect data on feeding frequency and duration, as well …

Desire: An Efficient Dynamic Cluster-Based Forest Indexing For Similarity Search In Multi-Metric Spaces, Yifan Zhu, Lu Chen, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Pengfei Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Similarity search fnds similar objects for a given query object based on a certain similarity metric. Similarity search in metric spaces has attracted increasing attention, as the metric space can accommodate any type of data and support fexible distance metrics. However, a metric space only models a single data type with a specifc similarity metric. In contrast, a multi-metric space combines multiple metric spaces to simultaneously model a variety of data types and a collection of associated similarity metrics. Thus, a multi-metric space is capable of performing similarity search over any combination of metric spaces. Many studies focus on indexing …

Filling A Niche? The Maize Productivity Impacts Of Adaptive Breeding By A Local Seed Company In Kenya, Samuel S. Bird, Michael R. Carter, Travis J. Lybbert, Mary Mathenge, Timothy Njagi, Emilia Tjernström

All Faculty Scholarship

This paper studies whether the absence of locally adapted seed varieties constrains the productivity and incomes of farm households residing in small, agro-ecological niches. We empirically examine the disruption of the maize seed market in Western Kenya that took place when public sector foundation breeding and social impact investment capital came together and allowed a local seed company to expand and target a niche area with adaptively-bred maize varieties. The three-year randomized controlled trial reveals that these seed varieties increased farmer yields and revenues, both for better-resourced farmers (who used non-adapted hybrids and fertilizer prior to the intervention) as well …

The Arv Treatment Adherence Model: A Qualitative Study On Antiretroviral (Arv) Treatment Adherence For People Living With Hiv, Danielle Strauss

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Adherence to antiretroviral (ARV) treatment improves life expectancy and other health outcomes for people living with HIV (PLWH). It also minimizes their risk of transmitting HIV through sexual contact and is therefore a form of HIV prevention. However, many PLWH, specifically low-income PLWH of color who have been disproportionately impacted by the virus, face a multitude of barriers to ARV treatment adherence, making it much harder for them to take their medication as prescribed and remain engaged in care. This qualitative study based on Constructivist Grounded Theory explored the process by which 14 virally suppressed, low-income PLWH of color overcame …
