Soybean oil is one of the most consumed vegetable oils worldwide. Genetic improvement of its concentration in seeds has been historically pursued due to its direct association with its market value. Engineering attempts aiming to increase soybean seed oil presented different degrees of success that varied with the genetic design and the specific variety considered. Understanding the embryo’s responses to the genetic modifications introduced, is a critical step to successful approaches. In this work, the metabolic and transcriptional responses to AtWRI1 and AtDGAT1 expression in soybean seeds were evaluated. AtWRI1 is a master regulator of fatty acid (FA) biosynthesis, and …

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are one of the most important pollinating species of flowering plants. Recently, populations of honey bees have been declining due to a combination of factors, including the widespread use of agricultural pesticides. Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the acute oral toxicity of different formulated pesticides to honey bee adults. In particular, we assessed the acute oral toxicity of two neonicotinoids (acetamiprid, Assail 30SG and thiamethoxam, Actara 25WDG) and two other systemic insecticide products (sulfoxaflor, Closer 2SC and flupyradifurone, Sivanto 200SL), all of which are generally used in pest management programs in commercial apple …

Investigating The Impact Of A Conditional Cash Transfer On Adolescent Pregnancy: Incidence And Health Outcomes, Mitzie Irene P. Conchada, Marites M. Tiongco, Dominque Hannah Sy
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The literature on conditional cash transfers focuses on the impact of such on health and education outcomes. The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program in the Philippines provides a cash grant conditional on requirements related to health and education. We investigated the impact of the program on adolescent pregnancy through its link to education. The program, which is designed to increase teen education, may lead to decreased adolescent pregnancy because it adds to the opportunity cost of getting pregnant. Though the incidence of pregnancy among adolescent women rates in the Philippines have declined over the past thirty years, a considerable number of …

Does Media Affect Adherence To Covid-19 Quarantine Protocols?, Luz Suplico-Jeong, Reynaldo Bautista Jr., Noel Sajid Murad, Nelson Guillen Jr.
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The Philippines, which has experienced community quarantine from March 2020 to the present, is one country that has imposed quarantine protocols. Although the Philippine government imposes penalties on those who do not follow the quarantine protocols, the success of quarantine depends on the individual’s adherence to quarantine protocols. This study examined if media affected adherence to COVID-19 protocols. 334 residents from lloilo, Philippines were surveyed. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior as a framework, the results showed a positive relationship between (1) attitude and quarantine adherence, (2) controllability and quarantine adherence, and (3) media and quarantine adherence. This implies that …

The US Dietary Guidelines for Americans is an enormously influential policy that has guided US nutrition programs since 1980. During these last 40 years, some researchers have expressed concern that the guidelines are based on an insufficiently rigorous assessment of the scientific evidence, a view that was largely substantiated by a Congressionally mandated 2017 report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, which identified a need for enhanced transparency, greater scientific rigor, and updates to the scientific methodology for the DGA process. This paper traces the history of these ideas and contextualizes the DGA within the law and …

Harnessing Confidence For Report Aggregation In Crowdsourcing Environments, Hadeel Alhosaini, Xianzhi Wang, Lina Yao, Zhong Yang, Farookh Hussain, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Crowdsourcing is an effective means of accomplishing human intelligence tasks by leveraging the collective wisdom of crowds. Given reports of various accuracy degrees from workers, it is important to make wise use of these reports to derive accurate task results. Intuitively, a task result derived from a sufficient number of reports bears lower uncertainty, and higher uncertainty otherwise. Existing report aggregation research, however, has largely neglected the above uncertainty issue. In this regard, we propose a novel report aggregation framework that defines and incorporates a new confidence measure to quantify the uncertainty associated with tasks and workers, thereby enhancing result …
Implementing A Screening Tool For Social Determinants Of Health In A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Kimberly S. Roberts
Implementing A Screening Tool For Social Determinants Of Health In A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Kimberly S. Roberts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract The environment and conditions in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age are social determinants of health (SDOH). Specifically, SDOH are categorized into five domains: (a) economic stability, (b) education access and quality, (c) health care access and quality, (d) neighborhood and built environment, and (e) social and context communities. Inequities in these domains are associated with health disparities that lead to poorer health and quality of life. The aim of this quality improvement project was to implement the Protocol for Responding to and Assessing Patient Assets, Risks, and Experiences (PRAPARE) to screen patients’ SDOH …

Plant Growth-Promoting Activity Of Bacteria Isolated From Asian Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Depends On Rice Genotype, Nasim Maghboli Balasjin, James Maki, Michael Schläppi, Christopher Marshall
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Asian rice is one of the most important crops because it is a staple food for almost half of the world’s population. To have production of rice keep pace with a growing world population, it is anticipated that the use of fertilizers will also need to increase, which may cause environmental damage through runoff impacts. An alternative strategy to increase crop yield is the use of plant growth-promoting bacteria. Thousands of microbial species can exist in association with plant roots and shoots, and some are critical to the plant’s survival. We isolated 140 bacteria from two distantly related rice accessions …

Utilizing Mindfulness And Movement To Promote Executive Function And Self-Regulation, Sonia Bockoven
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Self-regulation and executive function skills are imperative to learning in school and success later in life. The current reality shows that these skills are not often taught, yet early childhood remains a vital time of development and is an ideal time to introduce these skills. This school improvement plan presents mindfulness and movement as strategies to explicitly teach self-regulation and executive function skills in an inclusive setting. As strategies are implemented, reflection and assessment will occur to better understand their effectiveness. Families will also be involved to encourage application of skills and strategies outside of academic settings.

Promoting Best Practice In Cancer Care In Sub Saharan Africa, Karishma Sharma, Shahin Sayed, Mansoor Saleh
Internal Medicine, East Africa
Promoting best practice in the management of a cancer patient is rooted in the application of new knowledge derived through various sources including population science, laboratory advances, and translational research. Ultimately, the impact of these advances depends on their application at the patient’s bedside. A close collaboration between the oncologist and the pathologist is critical in underwriting progress in the management of the cancer patient. Recent advancements have shown that more granular characteristics of the tumor and themicroenvironment are defining determinants when it comes to disease course and overall outcome. Whereas, histologic features and basic immunohistochemical characterization were previously adequate …

Vanishing twin’s syndrome refers to the death of one of the co-twin foetus(es) during the early antenatal period. The cause of vanishing twins is unknown and most cases occur with in-vitro fertilization (IVF) conception. Transvaginal ultrasonography helps to detect lost twins during the early trimester. The complications that may arise among neonates born to women with a known history of vanishing twin syndrome are low birth weight and low Apgar score at birth.
