Osteoarthritis (Oa), Ashley Smith

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis that millions of people struggle with in their day to day lives. OA is often observed in an outpatient pain management setting as it is considered an unavoidable disease process expected in aging individuals. OA is a costly, painful, and debilitating disease. OA goes further than physically limiting patients, it can even affect mental and emotional stability. Although there is not an available cure for OA, there are many preventative manageable treatment options available. Education, evaluation and management of OA is important to be knowledgeable about in order to help patients …

Something Has To Change, Alex Dodge

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

This project happened to be about the same time that I was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease. Lyme disease is acquired when you are bitten by an infected tick. If not treated in the acute stages this person will continue to get sicker with a multitude of unexplained health issues. I am an unlucky individual that was bitten by a diseased tick, and I had no idea. It took a year before any of my doctors figured it out. I was faced with a major lifestyle decision once I was diagnosed with chronic Lyme. If I wanted to live symptom-free …

On Categorical Property Of Fuzzy Soft Topological Spaces, S. Saleh, Radwan Abu-Gdairi, Tareq M. Al-Shami, Mohammed S. Abdo

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The main aim of this work is to provide a categorical framework for fuzzy soft topological spaces FST. We define some of their subcategories such as Top, STop, δτ-FST, χ􏰀-FST, and α􏰀-FST. In general, we initiate some functors between them and discuss some results and relations of fuzzy soft maps. The relationships between FST and their subcategories are studied, for instance, we show that Top, STop are bireflective full subcategories of FST and α􏰀-FSTis a bicoreflective full subcategory of FST. Moreover, we demonstrate that Top, δτ -FST, and χ􏰀-FST are isomorphic.

Compositional And Functional Changes In Microbial Communities Of Composts Due To The Composting-Related Factors And The Presence Of Listeria Monocytogenes, Hongye Wang, Vijay Shankar, Xiuping Jiang

Open Access Publishing Fund

Listeria monocytogenes is a leading foodborne pathogen that can contaminate fresh produce in farm environment, resulting in deadly outbreaks. Composts contain a diversity of microorganisms, and some of them may be compost-adapted competitive exclusion microorganisms against L. monocytogenes. To understand interactions between compost microflora and the pathogen, both dairy- and poultry-wastes based composts (n = 12) were inoculated with L. monocytogenes, and then analyzed by next-generation sequencing approaches along with culturing methods. DNA extraction and enumeration of L. monocytogenes were performed at 0 and 72 h post-incubation at room temperature. The major bacterial phyla were identified as Firmicutes (23%), Proteobacteria …

Using Community-Based Participatory Research To Assess The Needs Of Hiv-Related Services For Infected Individuals In Rural Communities, Elizabeth Brown, Charles Brown, Owen Johnson, Wendelyn Inman, Revlon Briggs, Wanda Burrell, Rosemary Theriot, Elizabeth Williams, Alexis Heaston

Public Health, Health Administration, and Health Sciences Faculty Research

HIV/AIDS remains a significant health concern in rural communities, which may also experience many disparate issues including reduced access to health services (Department of Health and Human Services, 2015). Community efforts should be increased to improve services to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), especially in rural communities. In the state of Tennessee, using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach, a needs assessment was conducted to identify gaps, barriers, and strategies for improving HIV-related comprehensive care services for people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 26 rural counties. The paper describes the CBPR partnership and the needs assessment project that was conducted and …

A Conserved Mechanism For Hormesis In Molecular Systems, Sharon N. Greenwood, Regina G. Belz, Brian P. Weiser Jul 2022

A Conserved Mechanism For Hormesis In Molecular Systems, Sharon N. Greenwood, Regina G. Belz, Brian P. Weiser

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Hormesis refers to dose-response phenomena where low dose treatments elicit a response that is opposite the response observed at higher doses. Hormetic dose-response relationships have been observed throughout all of biology, but the underlying determinants of many reported hormetic dose-responses have not been identified. In this report, we describe a conserved mechanism for hormesis on the molecular level where low dose treatments enhance a response that becomes reduced at higher doses. The hormetic mechanism relies on the ability of protein homo-multimers to simultaneously interact with a substrate and a competitor on different subunits at low doses of competitor. In this …

More Than Recipes: Enriching A Campus Common Read With Historical Cookbooks, Kristen J. Nyitray, Christine Fena

Library Faculty Publications

In this case study, the authors describe a virtual event designed to enrich a campus common read with historical cookbooks. The program included an overview of the collection and a real-time activity to engage participants in virtually examining rare and unique Chinese cookbooks. A set of guiding questions emphasized primary source literacies including analyses of physical characteristics, contexts, content, and further research that can be conducted by consulting the collection. The virtual modality proved to be both a challenge and an opportunity, but the overall structure of the event - identifying a collection that relates to a larger campus initiative, …

The Effects Of Food Reward In Childhood On Disordered Eating Habits In Young Adults, Ainsley H. Steinbrueck Jul 2022

The Effects Of Food Reward In Childhood On Disordered Eating Habits In Young Adults, Ainsley H. Steinbrueck

Selected Honors Theses

Childhood is a critical time for the development of habits of a person. Food is frequently used to reward children for performing desired behaviors. Using food rewards can create a psychological connection to food that goes beyond metabolic need which may develop disordered eating habits, such as emotional eating, binge eating and food addiction. This thesis examines the roles of food rewards given in childhood and their impact on disordered eating habits in young adulthood. A survey was completed by 58 participants (9 male and 49 female) which evaluated the presence, if any, of food rewards in childhood, the current …

HPD Articles

Although severe cases and mortality of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are proportionally infrequent, these cases are strongly linked to patients with conditions of metabolic syndrome (obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia). However, the pathophysiology of COVID-19 in relation to metabolic syndrome is not well understood. Thus, the goal of this secondary literature review was to examine the relationship between severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2) infection and the individual conditions of metabolic syndrome. The objective of this secondary literature review was achieved by examining primary studies, case studies, and other secondary studies, to obtain a comprehensive perspective of theories and observations of …

Dam Jurisprudence Of The Supreme Court Of India: Situating The Case Of Mullaperiyar Dam Dispute, S. G. Sreejith

UC Law SF International Law Review

The Mullaperiyar dam dispute between the South Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, which pertains to the safety of a 126-year-old dam, despite a ruling by the Supreme Court of India to retain the dam, keeps on reappearing before the Court in one way or other. The primary reason for such a recurrence is the fear of 4 million people of Kerala living downstream the century-old dam. Yet the Court has been reluctant to make a final settlement to the dispute and keeps on encouraging the states to find a solution through the political process.

The reluctance of the …

Office of the Provost

Evidence from Mendelian randomization studies suggest that lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) has a causal role in the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk. However, guidelines and consensus statement recommendations vary regarding how clinicians should incorporate Lp(a) into patient care. To provide practical answers to key questions pertaining to Lp(a) that clinicians will find useful when assessing and treating patients, a global think tank was convened. Representatives from seven national and international stakeholder organizations answered questions that were focused on: Lp(a) measurement; ethnic, gender, and age considerations; factoring Lp(a) into risk assessment; and current and emerging treatment options for elevated Lp(a). This manuscript …

A Parallel Infodemic: Multifaceted Approaches To Online Public Health Mis- And Disinformation During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Erin Hutchins Jul 2022

A Parallel Infodemic: Multifaceted Approaches To Online Public Health Mis- And Disinformation During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Erin Hutchins

UC Law Journal

During the COVID-19 pandemic, communities congregated in online spaces more than ever before. While some people found solidarity online, many others found snippets of false information regarding COVID-19’s origin, transmission, and preventative measures. Inaccurate public health information originated long before the COVID-19 pandemic, but it thrived as the uncertainty around daily living dragged on. The pandemic prompted a conversation about who, if anyone, is responsible for deciphering and regulating the spread of false and misleading information. This Note presents two methods in which inaccurate information can be redressed. First, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act—which provides sweeping immunity for …

Using Insurance To Regulate Food Safety: Field Notes From The Food Produce Sector, Timothy D. Lytton

New Mexico Law Review

Foodborne illness is a public health problem of pandemic proportions. In the United States alone, contaminated food sickens an estimated 48 million consumers annually, causing 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths. Nowhere is this crisis more acute than in the fresh produce sector, where microbial contamination in growing fields and packing houses has been responsible for many of the nation’s largest and deadliest outbreaks.

This Article examines emerging efforts by private insurance companies to regulate food safety on farms that grow fresh produce.

Previous studies of using insurance to regulate food safety rely on economic theories that yield competing conclusions. Optimists …

Lost In Translation? Communicating Nutrition Science, Lindsay Yarabek Datlow Jul 2022

Lost In Translation? Communicating Nutrition Science, Lindsay Yarabek Datlow

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Diet is directly correlated with overall health; therefore, nutrition is a critical piece of the obesity-epidemic puzzle. The news media has become a primary source for nutrition information yet results from International Food Information Council surveys indicate that the majority of Americans view the nutrition news they read as inconsistent and confusing. Very recent inquiry provides empirical evidence that nutrition confusion could be fueled by media. Nutrition confusion has been causally linked to “nutrition backlash,” which is complete disregard for even the most strongly supported nutrition advice. Understanding how nutrition research is translated in the news media and the mechanisms …
