Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Model card reports aim to provide informative and transparent description of machine learning models to stakeholders. This report document is of interest to the National Institutes of Health's Bridge2AI initiative to address the FAIR challenges with artificial intelligence-based machine learning models for biomedical research. We present our early undertaking in developing an ontology for capturing the conceptual-level information embedded in model card reports.

RESULTS: Sourcing from existing ontologies and developing the core framework, we generated the Model Card Report Ontology. Our development efforts yielded an OWL2-based artifact that represents and formalizes model card report information. The current release of …

Applications Of Stretching Technique And Time Window Effects On Ultrasonic Velocity Monitoring In Concrete, Bibo Zhong, Jinying Zhu Jul 2022

Applications Of Stretching Technique And Time Window Effects On Ultrasonic Velocity Monitoring In Concrete, Bibo Zhong, Jinying Zhu

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Coda wave interferometry (CWI) has been used to measure the relative wave-velocity change (dV/V) caused by small changes in materials. This study uses the stretching processing technique which has been used for CWI analysis to investigate velocity changes of direct longitudinal (P) wave, direct shear (S) wave, and coda wave in concrete by choosing different time windows of ultrasonic signals. It is found that the obtained wave-velocity change depends on the time window position, because the relative contribution of P wave and S wave is different in each signal window. This paper presents three experimental scenarios of velocity …

Inflammatory Bowel Disease & Social (In)Visibility: An Interpretive Study Of Food Choice, Self-Blame And Coping In Women Living With Ibd, Jessica N. Lolli Jul 2022

Inflammatory Bowel Disease & Social (In)Visibility: An Interpretive Study Of Food Choice, Self-Blame And Coping In Women Living With Ibd, Jessica N. Lolli

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an interpretive project that uses autoethnography and qualitative interview methods to understand the role Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) plays in women’s quality of life and interpersonal relationships. It focuses on the impacts on patients of dietary changes and how food choice serves to make this ordinarily “invisible” illness visible to others, leading to unwanted exposure. Using Erving Goffman’s stigma theory and its extensions in studies of chronic illness, I demonstrate that IBD is characterized by layers of stigma because it creates situations in which patients are forced to disclose their illness even if they are not ready …

Developing A Customised Note By Note Prototype Recipe Which Can Be 3d Printed, Roisin Burke, Pauline Danaher

Articles

Note by Note (NbN) cooking and 3D food printing individually and in combination allow for the creation of customized foods. A NbN recipe was developed and printed using a Procusini 3.0, 3D food printer. The recipe was adapted from a commercial powdered pastry dough recipe, to create two versions of a prototype food, containing in each case a different plant-based protein, i.e., soya (Glycine max L.) or hemp (Cannabis sativa). The printed foods were identical in shape and had a crisp consistency following cooking. They had different colours and contained different proteins in the amounts of 10.3 % of soya …

Taking Responsibility For Systemic Failures: Rhetorical Homologies And Discourses Of Sustainability, Health, And Voting, Alice Grosu Jul 2022

Taking Responsibility For Systemic Failures: Rhetorical Homologies And Discourses Of Sustainability, Health, And Voting, Alice Grosu

Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research

When considering the discourse of presidential candidates, talk show hosts discussing mental health issues, and companies advertising sustainable goods, this essay argues that they share a formal resemblance. Whenever the same formal resemblance, or the same pattern, can be found within different instances of rhetoric, this indicates that the texts are homologous. Making sense of these instances of discourse is essential if one seeks to understand the way in which the public’s political engagement can be hindered by these rhetorical acts.

High Performance Judoka’S Views On Their Athlete Journey And The Need For Athlete Education, Katrina Mcdonald, Anna Stodter, Mathew Dowling, Justin Roberts

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

High-performance sport has been the subject of controversy and scandal, coming under heavy scrutiny within the broad issue of “Duty of Care” in terms of the welfare and holistic development of athletes. The United Kingdom has many different schemes and mechanisms that are available to athletes to support them in their development on their athlete journey. However, there is a lack of research exploring whether these schemes and mechanisms fulfill athlete needs and facilitate athlete development. Utilizing Charmaz’s constructivist grounded theory method, twelve full-time, high-performance Judoka (Judo athletes) were intensively interviewed, exploring the experience of their journey as an athlete. …

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is a standard treatment modality for locally advanced, high-risk, and metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer. Long-term ADT treatment likely develops side-effects that include changes in cognition or onset of dementia. However, the molecular understanding of this effect remains elusive. We attempt to establish a link between ADT and changes in cognitive function using patient databases and bioinformatics analyses. Methods: Gene expression profiling was performed using RNA sequencing data from Alzheimer patient cohort and compared with the data from advanced-stage prostate cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant antiandrogen therapy. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were analyzed using the Ingenuity knowledge …

Towards Multiplexed And Multimodal Biosensor Platforms In Real-Time Monitoring Of Metabolic Disorders, Sung Sik Chu, Hung Anh Nguyen, Jimmy Zhang, Shawana Tabassum, Hung Cao

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a cluster of conditions that increases the probability of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, and is very common worldwide. While the exact cause of MS has yet to be understood, there is evidence indicating the relationship between MS and the dysregulation of the immune system. The resultant biomarkers that are expressed in the process are gaining relevance in the early detection of related MS. However, sensing only a single analyte has its limitations because one analyte can be involved with various conditions. Thus, for MS, which generally results from the co-existence of multiple complications, a multi-analyte …

In this cohort of 741 infants, the mean birth weight was 3036 ± 424 g. For 721 (98%) infants, weight loss occurred for a median of 2 days (interquartile range, 1-4) following birth until weight nadir was reached 5.9 ± 4.3% below birth …

The U.S. Withdraws: Impact On The U.S. And International Rule Of Law, Joseph M. Isanga Jul 2022

The U.S. Withdraws: Impact On The U.S. And International Rule Of Law, Joseph M. Isanga

Florida Journal of International Law

The United States has been and will continue to be an important player in International Law. That role presupposes that the U.S. stays engaged with International Law. However, in recent years the United States has trended toward withdrawal from several international treaties and organizations. This Article argues that it is in the national interest of the United States to adopt a radically different approach: stay engaged and try to improve International Law from within. This proposition is predicated on the idea that U.S. withdrawal has often had the retrogressive effect of loss of leverage for the U.S. and diminishment of …

The Sustainable Development Goals (Sdgs) And The Right To Health: Is There A Nexus?, Obiajulu Nnamuchi

Florida Journal of International Law

The indispensability of health to life and human wellbeing is not subject of any serious controversy. Similarly, the link between health and poverty is firmly established in the literature—the simple reason being that poverty is both a cause and consequence of ill health. Recognition of this relationship explains the inclusion of health as a component of the most important contemporary poverty centered global policy framework, namely, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. Nonetheless, although there seems to be a general consensus that at the core of the SDGs is poverty eradication …

Just War And The Roman Catholic Life Ethic, Marvin Lim

Florida Journal of International Law

This Article will argue that the Church’s actual application of just war doctrine has indeed contravened its broader, otherwise extremely robust ethic of life. This Article makes this argument by proceeding in three parts. Part I introduces the Church’s doctrine on life, as expressed most explicitly in its Canon Law on Sanctions and its Catechism on the Fifth Commandment (“Thou shalt not kill”). Part II explores three specific area in which the Church’s application of just war doctrine clashes with principles located in its broader life ethic. Finally, Part III discusses the implications of these inconsistencies for the Church’s future …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

While firearm-related injuries are the leading cause of death among US children between 1-18, and account for nearly half of suicides among young people, public health experts continue to struggle in identifying efficacious mechanisms to reduce and prevent firearm access for children. Currently 4.8 million children live in a home with a loaded and unlocked firearm and more than a third of adolescents nationwide say that they can access a loaded firearm within five minutes. However, the risk of unintentional or self-inflicted firearm injury is lower if all household firearms are stored locked. It is imperative for parents to be …
