The practice of intermittent fasting continues to grow as a widely practiced diet trend due to its feasibility and reported high success rate. By practicing intermittent fasting, levels of sirtuin proteins (SIRTs), also known as the longevity protein, rise in the body and bring numerous health benefits. Currently, seven SIRTs have been described in humans in different locations of the cell with a wide variety of corresponding functions including gene transcription, DNA repair, and protection against oxidative damage. SIRT activators, such as resveratrol found in red wine, are also commonly consumed to amplify the health benefits associated with protection against …

BACKGROUND: Jaundice within the first 1-2 weeks of a neonate's life will generally self-resolve; however, if it lasts longer than this time frame it warrants further work up. Direct or conjugated hyperbilirubinemia can suggest neonatal cholestasis, which in turn reflects marked reduction in bile secretion and flow. The differential diagnosis for neonatal cholestasis is broad. Neonatal choledocholithiasis is a rare cause of neonatal cholestasis, but should be considered on the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with elevated conjugated bilirubin.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe an infant who presented with neonatal cholestasis. He subsequently underwent work up for biliary atresia, as this …

When Keeping It Real Is Required: Challenging The Pandemic Of Racism In Lactation Land, Tameka Jackson-Dyer
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Human milk is the optimal source of nutrition for infants, but few are able to provide their milk to their babies for the minimum twelve months recommended by health experts. This is especially true for Black women. Due to structural racism embedded in medical care, implicit bias of healthcare providers and generational traumas that began during American chattel slavery, Black women are less likely than every other ethnic group to initiate breastfeeding. Those that do are often sabotaged by unsupportive systems and lack of access to clinically-skilled, culturally respectful lactation consultants. Calling out the racism that exists in Lactation Land …

Using International Human Rights Law To Address Hunger In The U.S., R. Denisse CóRdova Montes
The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review
International human rights law recognizes a right to adequate food. The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (“ICESCR”) upholds “the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living for himself and his family, including adequate food, clothing, and housing, and to the continuous improvement of living conditions.” The right is further enumerated in international law through additional conventions and standards and is continuously being interpreted and analyzed by United Nations (“U.N.”) expert bodies. The United States (“U.S.”), though a signatory to several international human rights conventions, including the ICESCR, has not ratified any convention that would make …

Trouble In Paradise: Puerto Rico's Routine Exclusion From Federal Benefit Programs As A Result Of The Alien-Citizen Paradox, Katerina Martínez Vélez
The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review
Puerto Ricans are United States citizens by birthright. The island itself is neither a state nor an independent country, but rather, a territory of the United States. As a territory, Puerto Rico holds a unique tax status, and its residents are exempt from some federal and income taxes. Regardless, Puerto Ricans contribute significantly to the federal treasury by paying customs taxes, federal commodity taxes, and all payroll taxes (also known as FICA taxes), which include Social Security, Medicare, and Unemployment Compensation. Yet, its residents are still subject to discrimination on the basis of residency. In this article, I will explore …

Prebiotics Enhance Persistence Of Fermented-Food Associated Bacteria In In Vitro Cultivated Fecal Microbial Communities, Chloe M. Christensen, Car Reen Kok, Jennifer Auchtung, Robert Hutkins
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
It is well established that the gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota plays a major role in human health. Dietary interventions, and consumption of fermented foods that contain live microbes, in particular, are among the approaches being investigated to modulate the GI microbiota and improve health. However, the persistence of fermented food-associated bacteria (FAB) within the GI tract is typically limited by host factors that limit colonization and competition with autochthonous microbes. In this research, we examined if the addition of prebiotics, dietary substrates that are selectively metabolized by microbes to improve health, would enhance the persistence of FAB. We evaluated the persistence …

Background: It is well known that sarcopenia is a common risk factor in patients with gastrointestinal tumours, which may negatively affect the clinical outcome and prognosis. Recent studies suggest that serum creatinine-cystatin C (Cr/CysC) ratio may be associated with sarcopenia, but this association lacks sufficient evidence in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether the Cr/CysC ratio was associated with sarcopenia and recurrence-free survival (RFS) in patients with GIST.
Materials and methods: The study retrospectively analysed 413 patients with GIST who underwent surgical resection from January 2016 to January 2020. The serum Cr/CysC ratio …

Large-Scale Historic Habitat Loss In Estuaries And Its Implications For Commercial And Recreational Fin Fisheries, Thomas Stamp, Elizabeth West, Tim Robbins, Shaun Plenty, Emma Sheehan
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Abstract Estuaries provide important nursery and feeding habitat for numerous commercially and ecologically important fish, however, have been historically subject to substantial habitat alteration/degradation via environmental fluctuations, sea level rise, human activity on intertidal habitats, and adjacent land management. This review has summarized estuarine habitat use for 12 economically important finfish in the United Kingdom, of which seven were found to utilize estuarine habitats e.g. saltmarsh during their life cycle. This review reveals that ∼2500 km2 of intertidal habitat has been lost from estuaries in England and Wales since 1843. The implications of this large-scale habitat loss and continued anthropogenic …

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men. PCa cells require androgen receptor (AR) signaling for their growth and survival. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is the preferred treatment for patients with locally advanced and metastatic PCa disease. Despite their initial response to androgen blockade, most patients eventually will develop metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Bone metastases are common in men with mCRPC, occurring in 30% of patients within 2 years of castration resistance and in >90% of patients over the course of the disease. Patients with mCRPC-induced bone metastasis develop lesions throughout their skeleton; the 5-year …

Plants thrive in dynamic environments requiring adaptive strategies in response to environmental stressors. Furthermore, insect herbivores may be attracted or deterred by the expression of these traits. This study examines growth, physiological, and phytochemical adaptations of maple trees in response to stressors and how these stressors effect herbivore feeding behavior within an agricultural production system. Agricultural systems are unique because plants experience environmental stressors unique to production such as herbicide sprays and girdling. Using four environmental stressors commonly observed in agricultural production (control, mechanical defoliation, chemical defoliation, and girdling), applied to two cultivars of red maple (Acer rubrum, ‘Brandywine’ and …

Adult women with MDD and a Body Mass Index ≥30 were eligible. Nineteen women were randomized by random number table into AY (n = 9) or WW (n = 10). Intake, pretreatment, posttreatment, 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month follow-up assessments occurred …
Vermicompost Versus Traditional Compost Amendments Leads To Different Soil Health Outcomes In A Mediterranean Vineyard, Elizabeth L. Luck
Vermicompost Versus Traditional Compost Amendments Leads To Different Soil Health Outcomes In A Mediterranean Vineyard, Elizabeth L. Luck
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects
Compost application has become a common practice in vineyard management to increase soil and crop health, however, the environmental externalities such as greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from cropping systems that utilize organic fertilizers, such as compost, is uncertain. Vermicompost, which is compost created through the digestion of organic matter by earthworms, and its related ‘extract’ are commonly thought to provide more benefits for soil and crop health compared to standard compost. However, organic fertilizers such as vermicompost, vermicompost extract, and compost have not been compared in their effects on soil health in Mediterranean vineyards. In this two-year study, I assessed …

Child Malnutrition In Cambodia, Ashley G. Bernal
Ballard Brief
Malnutrition has been recognized as a global issue and has a high prevalence in poorer countries like Cambodia. Children are most affected by malnutrition, especially those under age 5. Malnourished children are at an increased risk for developing diseases, developmental delays, and dying at an earlier age. Child malnutrition in Cambodia is primarily due to a lack of education, cultural beliefs and practices, food insecurity, and recurrent diarrhea. The current best practice is vitamin A supplementation, provided by groups such as Helen Keller International through medical professionals and community volunteers.

The role of physical activity in normal weight obesity (NWO), which is associated with increased cardiometabolic risk, is not clear. This study aimed to determine body composition phenotype-specific differences in objectively measured physical activity and sedentary time in adults in the United States. A total of 2055 adults with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 18.5 m2 were studied using 2003–2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Physical activity and percent body fat (BF%) were measured using accelerometer and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, respectively. A BF% > 23.1% and >33.3% for men and women, respectively, was considered excess. A BMI of 18.5–24.9 …
