INTRODUCTION: Understanding of human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) remains largely based on epidemiologic and clinical data from endemic areas. Globalization has resulted in migration of persons living with HTLV (PLHTLV) from endemic to non-endemic areas, and a rise of HTLV infection in the United States. Yet, due to the historical rarity of this disease, affected patients are often under- and mis-diagnosed. Thus, we sought to characterize the epidemiology, clinical features, comorbidities, and survival of HTLV-1- or HTLV-2-positive individuals identified in a non-endemic area.
METHODS: Our study was a single institution, retrospective case-control analysis of HTLV-1 or HTLV-2 patients between 1998 and …

INTRODUCTION:
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine how different media influenced the amount of chitin and chitosan in the cell wall, which in turn impacted the cell wall architecture and host response.
METHODS: Yeast extract, peptone, and dextrose (YPD) and yeast nitrogen base (YNB) are two commonly used media for growing Cryptococcus before use in in vitro or in vivo experiments. As a result,
RESULTS: We observed that the growth of wild-type
CONCLUSION: These findings emphasize the importance of culture media and pH during growth in shaping the content and organization of the

Evaluating The Acute Effect Of Vaping On Food Intake, Gabrielle Maldonado
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Weight control is a common motive for continued cigarette smoking, and weight concerns pose a barrier to quitting. These effects are driven in part by nicotine’s ability to reduce overall appetite and ultimately body weight. Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have been marketed and used for weight control, suggesting that the use of these products potentially may share similar effects as well as barriers to quitting as observed for cigarette smoking. However, little to no controlled clinical lab evidence exists supporting ENDS use for weight control. The present study tested the influence of an ENDS on acute eating behavior …

Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most common malignant liver tumor among children. To gain insight into the pathobiology of HB, we performed RNA sequence analysis on 5 patient-derived xenograft lines (HB-243, HB-279, HB-282, HB-284, HB-295) and 1 immortalized cell line (HUH6). Using cultured hepatocytes as a control, we found 2,868 genes that were differentially expressed in all of the HB lines on mRNA level. The most upregulated genes were

Formation Of Vasculogenic Mimicry: Role Of Melanoma Differentiation Associated Gene-9 In Human Melanoma, Jinkal Shah
Theses and Dissertations
Malignant melanoma (MM) is the most aggressive skin cancer and the most frequent skin disorder in Caucasians. MM is associated with aggressive and progressive disease states, leading to major cancer-related morbidity and mortality. Recent investigations identify an alternative pathway -vasculogenic mimicry (VM), which is considered a cancer hallmark that can independently facilitate tumor neovascularization by the formation of fluid-conducting and vascular endothelial cells. MM cells undergoing VM can dedifferentiate into numerous cellular phenotypes and acquire endothelial-like features, resulting in the formation of the de novo matrix-rich vascular-like networks, such as plasma and red blood cells. The co-generation of endothelial cells, …
The Impact Of Patient Characteristics On Dysphagia Therapy Utilization And Feeding Outcomes For Premature Infants In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Tiana Nguyen
Theses and Dissertations
Medical advances have significantly increased the survival rates of preterm infants at lower gestational ages. However, infants born at lower gestational ages have an increased risk for developmental disabilities and oral feeding difficulties. A stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is very costly and inadequate oral feeding is the most common barrier to discharge for premature infants. Infants can receive dysphagia therapy services during their NICU stay that focuses on the development of oral feeding and swallowing skills. However, literature to this date has mainly focused on the impact of therapy services for premature infants after NICU discharge. …

Reduced Serum Concentrations Of Reactive Oxygen And Nitrogen Species Following Strenuous Exercise In The Heat Are Not Associ-Ated With An Upregulation In Serum Antioxidative Capacity, Sebastian Keller, Hannah Lisa Notbohm, Wilhelm Bloch, Moritz Schumann
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Introduction: Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) are produced as a response to exercise and play a part in guiding the adaptive response to physical training. Exercise in the heat has been shown to further increase accumulation of RONS in systemic circulation; however, a high antioxidative response or heat acclimatization mechanisms could attenuate this response. In a previous study, we found reduced RONS concentrations in trained athletes following strenuous cycling in the heat. Therefore, this secondary analysis assessed whether these reduced RONS serum concentrations are induced by an increased serum antioxidant capacity. Methods: Twelve male cyclists (V̇O2peak: 60 …

Problem-Based Learning And Case-Based Learning: Which Is More Effective For Fostering Mathematical Connection?, Erlinda Rahma Dewi, Arifta Nurjanah
Jurnal Riset Pendidikan Matematika
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Case-Based Learning (CBL) are two typical learning approaches that involve problem-solving activities, likely to encourage students' mathematical connection abilities. This study aimed to describe the differences in mathematical connection ability between students studying with the PBL and those who used the CBL approach. A quasi-experiment with a pretest-post-test non-equivalent group design was conducted for the purpose. The data collection method was non-routine problems about mathematical connections. The data was analyzed using inferential statistics. Paired sample t-tests adopted were to examine the difference between pretest and post-test data in each experimental class, and independent sample t-tests were …

Yogyakarta is one of the destinations in Indonesia affected by the Covid-19. Currently, tourist objects in Yogyakarta are gradually starting to open to the public, and one of them is beach tourism, although it can lead to a new cluster risk of the spread of Covid-19. According to the Texas Medical Association, traveling to a beach is included in a moderate risk with a score of 5-6, and health protocols are still required. Applying the crisis management and crisis communication model of Coombs, J, & Holladay, this study analyzes how tourism actors manage crisis communication at the beaches of Yogyakarta …

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development
Four wireless sensor network (WSN) technology packages developed for efficient irrigation water management in the Philippines were subjected to ex-ante cost-benefit analysis (CBA) to assess their financial viability. The WSN technologies include high-end and low-cost wireless sensors for upland crop production with drip irrigation system and lowland crop production with alternate wetting and drying (AWD). Results showed that the high-end WSN technology packages are only viable for high-value crops such as red onion, bell pepper, and hot pepper. The low-cost WSN technology packages are viable for all selected crops except sweet corn. Minimum areas were also generated for each crop …

Poultry industries encounter problem in produce day old chicken (DOC). Poultry industries usually produce DOC using egg incubator. Egg incubator must have high accuracy in reading environment temperature inside the machine. The temperature environment inside the egg incubator machine needs to keep in range 36°C - 40°C. On the other hand, hatcheries and chicken coop usually not in one place. Poultry industries require applied technology to solve this problem. This problem can be solved by using internet of things. But internet of things can be so expensive. This research is aim to implement monitoring and controlling temperature inside egg incubator …

Exercise can have a physiological effect on the body, including the work system of the heart and lungs. The lungs have an important role in human life, where there is an exchange of oxygen with carbon dioxide through the respiratory process. In terms of health, exercise needs to be done by every human being, because exercise can increase the work of the lung muscles, whereas if the lung muscles work well, the ability to accommodate oxygen or the vital capacity of the human lungs also increases. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of physical exercise on …
