Embedding Health And Wellbeing Opportunities For People Experiencing Homelessness In A Wider Support System, M. Paisi, L. Withers, J. Erwin, J. Horrell, R. Witton, J. Shawe, R. Byng

School of Nursing and Midwifery

IntroductionHomelessness impacts negatively on health, wellbeing and life expectancy. People experiencing homelessness are likely to suffer physical and mental health problems, be heavy users of emergency services, and die 30 years earlier than the general population.1–3 Their severe and multiple disadvantages raise personal and institutional barriers to using health, social and housing services.4In late 2021, a grass-roots initiative in Plymouth began offering a Saturday morning drop-in service for rough sleepers and those in emergency accommodation. The service responded to the bleakness, loneliness and lack of support imposed by Monday-Friday service patterns. This effort was strengthened in February 2022 by a …

Chronic Restraint Stress Impairs Voluntary Wheel Running But Has No Effect On Food-Motivated Behavior In Mice, Kiersten Scott, Thien Trong Phan, Nabila Boukelmoune, Cobi J Heijnen, Robert Dantzer

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Chronic restraint stress is known to cause significant alterations of mitochondrial biology. However, its effects on effort-based behavior and the sensitivity of these effects to treatments that restore mitochondrial function have not been assessed. Based on the hypothesis that the behavioral consequences of this stressor should be more severe for an energy demanding activity than for an energy procuring activity, we compared the effects of chronic restraint stress on the performance of male mice trained to use a running wheel or to nose poke for a food reward in an operant conditioning cage. In accordance with our hypothesis, we observed …

How Doctoral Students With Low Gre Scores Succeed: A Grounded Theory Study, Dea Mulolli, June E. Gothberg Jan 2023

How Doctoral Students With Low Gre Scores Succeed: A Grounded Theory Study, Dea Mulolli, June E. Gothberg

The Qualitative Report

Most U.S. graduate schools rely on the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) to predict readiness for graduate degree programs and differentiate between applicants in verbal and quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills. Many times, low GRE scores create a barrier to entry into U.S. graduate programs despite research showing that selecting graduate applicants based solely on academic metric thresholds does not guarantee graduate student performance and many low scorers still attain a graduate degree on time (Miller et al., 2019b; Pacheco et al., 2017; Petersen et al., 2018; Wang et al, 2013). In this study, we used a constructivist …

Developing Sustainable Aquaculture At Scale, Shauna A. Bulger Jan 2023

Developing Sustainable Aquaculture At Scale, Shauna A. Bulger

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Abstract

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that commercial aquaculture production has outpaced wild fisheries since 2013, and in 2018, aquaculture became the fastest growing food production sector in the world (FAO SOFIA, 2018). Wild fishery landings have not meaningfully increased since the 1980s. As a result, international development organizations and environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) have pitched the industry as a sustainable alternative to wild fisheries and the most promising option for the future of seafood production. Governance and transition scholars, however, are skeptical about if and how the presumed benefits of the fisheries-to-aquaculture will materialize for …

Analyzing The Impact Of Zip Subfamily Ii Mutations On The Zinc And Iron Transport Of Zupt From Escherichia Coli, Bradley Vandecar Jan 2023

Analyzing The Impact Of Zip Subfamily Ii Mutations On The Zinc And Iron Transport Of Zupt From Escherichia Coli, Bradley Vandecar

Wayne State University Theses

The disfunction or misregulation of the ZIP family of metal ion transporters has been linked to a plethora of diseases and cancers in humans. Zn2+ is the primary substrate for ZIPs and is transported through the M1 metal binding site, though this activity is stimulated through the binding of Fe2+ in the M2 metal binding site. The members of ZIP Subfamily II are predicted to have an inactive M2 site due to the lack of Fe2+ transport and from a previously generated homology model. This work utilizes homology modelling, whole cell metal ion uptake assays, and growth studies in minimal …
