The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the effect of an online brief in-service training integrating the 6 Rs Framework on Rainier Valley Birth & Health Center HCPs’ (i.e., Certified Nurse-Midwives and Licensed Midwives) attitudes, beliefs, knowledge, and practices pertaining to antenatal PAE. Quantitative data was collected …

An Interprofessional Collaboration To Increase Total Enteral Nutrition In Critically Ill Patients On Vasopressor Agents In Cvicu, Priyanka Shah Jan 2023

An Interprofessional Collaboration To Increase Total Enteral Nutrition In Critically Ill Patients On Vasopressor Agents In Cvicu, Priyanka Shah

DNP Projects

Background: Delayed enteral nutrition (EN) in critically ill patients increases the risk of complications and poor outcomes. The 2016 American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.) and Society of Critical Care Medicine (S.C.C.M.) evidence-based guideline recommends initiating EN within 24-48 hours of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission once resuscitation and hemodynamically stability have been achieved. The evidence-based guideline notes that critically ill patients on low-dose vasopressors can be started on EN with close monitoring.

Purpose: This interprofessional project aims to increase the amount of EN delivered to all qualifying Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) patients who are at risk …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Family-Based Treatment Education On Provider's Knowledge, Anticipatory Use, And Attitudes Who Treat Adolescent Patients Diagnosed With Anorexia Nervosa, Treven Back

DNP Projects

Background. Anorexia Nervosa is a chronic, disabling, and costly disease with a higher mortality rate than any other psychiatric illness. Because of the need for medical, psychiatric, and nutritional care, treatment is complex. The current literature supports Family-Based Treatment as a first-line treatment for adolescent patients diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa. However, a gap exists between translating family-based treatments into clinical practice. Literature shows that education and understanding providers' attitudes and beliefs are the first steps to successfully implementing family-based treatments.

Purpose. This DNP project aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a family-based treatment education intervention on providers' attitudes, knowledge, and …

Evaluating The Effect Of Electronic Health Record Patient Portal Use On Medication Adherence In Adults With Chronic Conditions, Jennifer Averbeck Jan 2023

Evaluating The Effect Of Electronic Health Record Patient Portal Use On Medication Adherence In Adults With Chronic Conditions, Jennifer Averbeck

DNP Projects

Background Medication non-adherence is prevalent among fifty percent of the United States population. This behavior leads to increased morbidity and mortality as well as increased healthcare costs for both the patient and the healthcare system. More than two-thirds of nonadherence exists in those aged over 65 years old who are diagnosed with Multiple Chronic Conditions (MCC). Several studies have researched and trialed interventions to improve rates of adherence, limit poor health outcomes, and decrease overall cost of care. The patient portal is an interactive tool which encourages participation of the patient in their healthcare management. Implementation of this tool has …

Molecular Analysis Of Epigenetic Memory Of Stress Establishment And Long-Term Maintenance In A Perennial Woody Plant, Jia Wen Tan Jan 2023

Molecular Analysis Of Epigenetic Memory Of Stress Establishment And Long-Term Maintenance In A Perennial Woody Plant, Jia Wen Tan

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Plants adapt to extreme environmental conditions through physiological adaptations, which are usually transient. Recent research has suggested that environmental conditions can activate a memory of stress that can result in a primed response to subsequent stress events. While the effect of priming has been observed in many plants, the underlying mechanisms are puzzling and seldom studied. A large body of research has been developed in the last decade linking response to stress, stress priming, and memory of stress with epigenetic mechanisms. This understanding of plant epigenetics has opened the door to the application of epigenetics to crop improvement, such as …

Building A Kentucky Baguette: Agronomic Traits, Bread Baking Quality Measurements, And Sensory Evaluation Of Modern And Landrace Wheat Cultivars Grown Under Conventional And Organic Nitrogen Management, Bryan Brady

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

The demand by artisan bread bakers across the United States for local wheat varieties has increased in recent years. The southeast is traditionally a soft winter wheat (SWW) region, producing low gluten flours more suitable for biscuits and cookies. Recently, hard winter wheat (HWW) varieties have been bred to produce acceptable yields in the high humidity environment of the southeastern United States. Artisan bread bakers in Kentucky would like to create a niche food value chain benefitting farmers, small-scale millers, bakers, consumers, and their local and regional food systems (LRFS). The increased demand and the availability of adapted hard wheat …

Abstract

Background: The Biden-Harris Administration National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, andHealth was released in September 2022, a result of the second-ever White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. Produce prescription programs were included in this strategy and identified as a mechanism for preventing or managing diet-related diseases and addressing food security. Food security is a key social determinant promoting health. Food security allows for the adequate nutrition needed to promote health and prevent and treat diet-related diseases. This study aims to identify the key considerations for implementing and scaling up a state-wide produce prescription program in Connecticut to translate …

Food Environment Intervention And Dietary Impacts In Blue Zones Project Communities On The Island Of Hawai'i, Katherine Fuller Jan 2023

Food Environment Intervention And Dietary Impacts In Blue Zones Project Communities On The Island Of Hawai'i, Katherine Fuller

Public Health Theses

ABSTRACTBackground: High intake of fruits and vegetables is associated with many health benefits including a lower risk of incident hypertension, heart disease, stroke, obesity, Alzheimer’s, and dementia. Dietary choices are impacted by a variety of individual socio-psychological and environmental factors. For this reason, Blue Zones Project (BZP) hypothesized that a multilevel intervention combining psychological, social, and environmental factors would have the largest impact on eating behaviors compared to a single-level approach. We assessed the impact of a BZP food environment intervention on fruit and vegetable intake and food insecurity among adults on the island of Hawai’i (or the Big Island). …

Do Longitudinal Trends In Caloric Intake Vary By Income, Education, Or Race?, Daniel Davila Jan 2023

Do Longitudinal Trends In Caloric Intake Vary By Income, Education, Or Race?, Daniel Davila

Public Health Theses

Background: The prevalence of obesity in the United States has increased over the last few decades. Reasons for the increases are abundant, but one factor consistently stands out, caloric intake. Cross-sectional data on differences in caloric intake by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status are common; however, few studies have evaluated the long-term trends in calorie intake by these factors. Methods: We evaluated trends in average calories consumed by adults in the United States by income decile, educational attainment level, and race/ethnicity from 1971 to 2018 using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which purposely assessed and recorded …

Estimating Urinary Nitrate Excretion In Rural Iowans From Dietary And Drinking Water Sources, Timothy Skalaban Jan 2023

Estimating Urinary Nitrate Excretion In Rural Iowans From Dietary And Drinking Water Sources, Timothy Skalaban

Public Health Theses

Nitrate levels are increasing in our environment, and epidemiological studies have found evidence of adverse health risks from this exposure. Therefore, it is important to characterize the magnitude of nitrate exposure from food and drinking water sources. This study assesses the magnitude of nitrate exposure for 47 farmers from the Agricultural Health Study (AHS) in 2018-2019. The participants in our study use private wells as their main drinking water source and live in agricultural area of Iowa (10 counties) where ground water is vulnerable to nitrate contamination. The extent of nitrate exposure is determined by several factors, including the types …

“So We Create Happy Synergies” How An Overall Enabling Environment Helped Lao Pdr Legislate The Who Code On Breastmilk Substitutes: Lessons Learnt, Devina Buckshee

Public Health Theses

ABSTRACT

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding rates in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) remain at 44% against a global goal of at least 50%, partly due to a weak understanding of the multifactorial and multilevel determinants of breastfeeding (UNICEF, 2021). Therefore, evidence-based advocacy efforts call for a systems approach to improve the enabling environment around breastfeeding. Aim: This study aims to stitch together the comprehensive patchwork of actors and dynamic ‘gears’ in the socio-ecological environment that came together to develop a much more enabling environment to improve child nutrition through breastfeeding promotion and protection in Lao PDR. Further, it aims to …

Psychological Resilience In U.S. Military Veterans: Results From The 2019-2020 National Health And Resilience In Veterans Study, Michael Georgescu Jan 2023

Psychological Resilience In U.S. Military Veterans: Results From The 2019-2020 National Health And Resilience In Veterans Study, Michael Georgescu

Public Health Theses

Psychological resilience is the most common response following exposure to traumatic life events. To date, most research has focused on factors associated with adverse post-trauma mental health outcomes rather than understanding those associated with psychological resilience. In particular, little is known about factors associated with resilience in veterans, despite their high rates of trauma exposure, such as combat and military sexual trauma. To address this gap, we used a discrepancy-based psychiatric resilience (DBPR) analytic approach to operationalize resilience and to identify modifiable health and psychosocial factors associated with resilience in a nationally representative sample of U.S. veterans (N = 4,069). …

Prevention Of Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv(Pmtct) Efforts In Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa: Lessons From Botswana, Jin Hee Kim

Public Health Theses

In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) continues to be an ongoing problem, scale up of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services remains a priority. Between 2001 and 2012 globally, the 52% decline of new pediatric HIV infection was attributed to the expansion of PMTCT services. In December of 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that Botswana was certified as having attained the silver-tier status in the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, because it had successfully reduced the MTCT rate to less than 5%, had provided antenatal care (ANC) and antiretroviral …
