Concern Or Control?: Gender Stereotyping And Hospitality Leaders, Bendegul Okumus, Wei Xiong, Shiyun Chen, Fang Fan

Rosen Research Review

Although most managers in the global hospitality industry are still male, an increasing number of women are taking on leadership roles. But how exactly do employees perceive masculine and feminine leadership styles? New research led by UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management's Associate Professor Bendegul Okumus and the research team she works with looks at gender stereotypes and finds that the most successful managers, in the eyes of their staff, have a management style that combines both masculine and feminine leadership traits.

Resolved Peristomal Erosive Papulonodular Dermatitis Mimicking Nevoid Hyperkeratosis Of The Nipple And Areola, Christa M. Tomc, Daniel A. Nguyen, Joseph S. Susa, Stephen E. Weis

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Nevoid hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola (NHKNA) is a rare cutaneous entity with a distinct clinical and histological presentation. The type II form of this condition can result from various dermatoses, such as irritant contact dermatitis. Erosive papulonodular dermatitis is a chronic irritant dermatitis that often occurs in areas of occlusion and maceration, such as peristomal skin. Pseudoverrucous papules and nodules are a variant of erosive papulonodular dermatitis and have a non-specific histologic pattern of reactive hyperplasia.

Case Presentation

We present a case of a patient with resolved peristomal erosive papulonodular dermatitis who presented status-post ileostomy reversal with …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

The etiological correlation between gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and apnea is controversial. We conducted a prospective interventional study designed to address the controversy.

Methods

Preterm neonates with apnea at a tertiary care center, who had clinical features of GER without any other comorbidities likely to cause apnea, were included in the study. The enrolled neonates underwent continuous transpyloric tube feeding for 72 hours. The primary outcome measure was the difference in the number of apneic episodes pre- and post-initiation of nasoduodenal (ND) feeding. Secondary outcome measures included the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis, other gastrointestinal disturbances, and mortality.

Results

Sixteen preterm …

Contextualizing The Neural Vulnerabilities Model Of Obesity, Timothy D. Nelson, Eric Stice Jun 2023

Contextualizing The Neural Vulnerabilities Model Of Obesity, Timothy D. Nelson, Eric Stice

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In recent years, investigators have focused on neural vulnerability factors that increase the risk of unhealthy weight gain, which has provided a useful organizing structure for obesity neuroscience research. However, this framework, and much of the research it has informed, has given limited attention to contextual factors that may interact with key vulnerabilities to impact eating behaviors and weight gain. To fill this gap, we propose a Contextualized Neural Vulnerabilities Model of Obesity, extending the existing theory to more intentionally incorporate contextual factors that are hypothesized to interact with neural vulnerabilities in shaping eating behaviors and weight trajectories. We …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Each year, infections from major foodborne pathogens are responsible for an estimated 9.4 million illnesses, 56,000 hospitalizations, and 1,350 deaths in the United States (1). To evaluate progress toward prevention of enteric infections in the United States, the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) conducts surveillance for laboratory-diagnosed infections caused by eight pathogens transmitted commonly through food at 10 U.S. sites. During 2020-2021, FoodNet detected decreases in many infections that were due to behavioral modifications, public health interventions, and changes in health care-seeking and testing practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. This report presents preliminary estimates of pathogen-specific annual incidences during …

Integrating Lipid Metabolism, Pheromone Production And Perception By Fruitless And Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor 4, Jie Sun, Wen Kan Liu, Calder Ellsworth, Qian Sun, Yufeng Pan, Yi Chun Huang, Wu Min Deng

Faculty Publications

Sexual attraction and perception are crucial for mating and reproductive success. In Drosophila melanogaster, the male-specific isoform of Fruitless (Fru), FruM, is a known master neuro-regulator of innate courtship behavior to control the perception of sex pheromones in sensory neurons. Here, we show that the non-sex-specific Fru isoform (FruCOM) is necessary for pheromone biosynthesis in hepatocyte-like oenocytes for sexual attraction. Loss of FruCOM in oenocytes resulted in adults with reduced levels of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), including sex pheromones, and show altered sexual attraction and reduced cuticular hydrophobicity. We further identify Hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 (Hnf4) as a key target of …

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

Double entry bookkeeping (DEB) and the rules of debit and credit (RDC) are first contained in a mathematical book. Using this basic premise, this study develops a mathematics-based teaching model (MBTM) and examines its impact on instructors’ financial accounting performance. This study employed a quasi-experimental method with 43 accounting instructors as participants. The findings indicate that the implementation of the MBTM resulted in a significant improvement in instructors' performance. Furthermore, the teaching experience had a positive effect on instructor performance, particularly when combined with the MBTM approach. Previous empirical research has aimed to compare traditional (preparer) and innovative (user) teaching …

Nutrient Supplementation During The Prenatal Period In Substance-Using Mothers: A Narrative Review Of The Effects On Offspring Development., Catherine Serwatka, Adrianne K. Griebel-Thompson, Rina D. Eiden, Kai Ling Kong

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Substance use during pregnancy increases the risk for poor developmental outcomes of the offspring, and for substance-dependent mothers, abstaining from substance use during pregnancy is often difficult. Given the addictive nature of many substances, strategies that may mitigate the harmful effects of prenatal substance exposure are important. Prenatal nutrient supplementation is an emerging intervention that may improve developmental outcomes among substance-exposed offspring. We provide a narrative review of the literature on micronutrient and fatty acid supplementation during pregnancies exposed to substance use in relation to offspring developmental outcomes. We first discuss animal models exposed to ethanol during pregnancy with supplementation …

Literature Study: Analysis Of The Relationship Between Age And The Incidence Of Postpartum Hemorrhage In Maternity Mothers, Tatut Isna Winanda Putri Pratiwi, Indah Ayu Afsari, Syifa'ul Lailiyah

Preventia: The Indonesian Journal of Public Health

Postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide with an incidence of 5 – 10 percent of all deliveries. Data shows a downward trend in maternal mortality in Indonesia in 1991 from 390 to 230 in 2020 per 100,000 live births. Maternal mortality is an important concern because being one of the indicators of health status and the success of health development, the reduction in maternal mortality rate is also a target in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the SDGs, the target of reducing the maternal mortality rate is 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. The …
