Assessing Monkeyface Prickleback Cebidichthys Violaceus As An Emerging Aquaculture Species In California, Matthew Hoehn
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In the context of global seafood demand and the pressing need for sustainable aquaculture practices, identifying and developing new species for aquaculture is of paramount importance. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the reproductive behavior and embryological development of the monkeyface prickleback (Cebidichthys violaceus), an emerging aquaculture species in California. The species exhibits several desirable traits for aquaculture, including herbivory, sedentary behavior, high tolerance to environmental extremes, high fillet-to-carcass ratios, and product similarity to high-value, less sustainable fishes such as unagi. Since very little reproductive behavior was available at the start of these studies the experiments were designed on …

Src Stimulates Abl-Dependent Phosphorylation Of The Guanine Exchange Factor Net1a To Promote Its Cytosolic Localization And Cell Motility, Ashabari Sprenger, Heather S Carr, Arzu Ulu, Jeffrey A Frost
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The neuroepithelial cell transforming gene 1 (Net1) is a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for the small GTPase RhoA that promotes cancer cell motility and metastasis. Two isoforms of Net1 exist, Net1 and Net1A, both of which are sequestered in the nucleus in quiescent cells to prevent aberrant RhoA activation. Many cell motility stimuli drive cytosolic relocalization of Net1A, but mechanisms controlling this event are not fully understood. Here, we demonstrate that epithelial growth factor stimulates protein kinase Src- and Abl1-dependent phosphorylation of Net1A to promote its cytosolic localization. We show that Abl1 efficiently phosphorylates Net1A on Y373, and that phenylalanine …

Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is a minimally invasive, specialized endoscopic technique that is useful in resecting superficial gastrointestinal lesions that are unable to be removed by standard polypectomy. This is typically accomplished using a submucosal injection that lifts the lesion away from the muscularis propria to allow for safe resection of the polyp, either via piecemeal or en bloc resection. Over the years, several techniques exist to perform EMR including conventional EMR or hot EMR, cold EMR and underwater EMR. Despite its established advantages and safety over conventional techniques such as surgery, the adoption of endoscopic resection (and thus the …

Leveraging Church Environments To Promote Rural Physical Activity And Healthy Eating, Kelsey Rothera Day
Leveraging Church Environments To Promote Rural Physical Activity And Healthy Eating, Kelsey Rothera Day
Theses and Dissertations
Rural residents experience a greater burden of chronic disease related to physical inactivity and poor diet than their urban counterparts. A promising strategy to improve these health behaviors in rural areas is to leverage existing structures that may support physical activity and healthy eating, such as churches, in public health interventions. Three studies were conducted as part of this dissertation. They were designed to: 1) examine whether the walkability and healthy food density of neighborhoods surrounding rural and urban churches are associated with race, socioeconomic status, and rural/urban status; 2) examine rural church leaders’ views on the role of faith-based …

Complementary And Integrative Health (Cih) And Opioid Use Among Adults With Chronic Noncancer Pain In The Us, Yi-Wen Shih
Theses and Dissertations
Chronic noncancer pain (CNCP) is defined as persistent pain lasting for more than three months due to conditions other than malignancy. This condition affects one in five American adults annually. The prescribing of opioids to individuals experiencing CNCP has been recognized as a critical contributor to the ongoing opioid crisis. In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH) as a nonpharmacologic treatment to be used among adults with CNCP. Despite the potential benefits of CIH for pain relief, there may be a discrepancy between individuals with CNCP and their insurance coverage for …
The Effects Of Variations In Light And Nutrient Availability On Phytoplankton And Zooplankton, Jake Anthony Swanson
The Effects Of Variations In Light And Nutrient Availability On Phytoplankton And Zooplankton, Jake Anthony Swanson
Theses and Dissertations
Aquatic ecosystems experience a wide range of variation in resource availability; two of the resources that are most essential to phytoplankton and zooplankton are light and nutrients. Light can vary in both its color and intensity; these variations can directly impact phytoplankton by altering the amount and color of light available for photosynthesis. Nutrient variability, particularly increases in nutrient levels, also alter phytoplankton communities by favoring the growth of certain taxa such as cyanobacteria.
To understand whether phytoplankton respond differently to changes in light availability I investigated whether the diversification of cryptophytes, phytoplankton with diverse light-capturing pigments, showed evidence of …
Feasibility Of A Parent-Focused, Stress Management Intervention To Decrease Adolescent Bmi, Reduce Stress, And Increase Well-Being Among African American Families, Colby J. Kipp
Theses and Dissertations
African American adolescents in the United States experience a higher prevalence of obesity as compared to their White counterparts. This health inequity presents a public health concern as consequences of weight-related chronic diseases often persist into adulthood and are increasingly problematic. As chronic stress has been found to be higher among African American youth compared to White adolescents, it presents as a potential barrier to participation for African American families in health promotion interventions. Additionally, it may be beneficial to target stress in health promotion programs as a modifiable factor in conjunction with health behaviors that may improve outcomes related …

BACKGROUND: A safe, effective, and reversible nonhormonal male contraceptive drug is greatly needed for male contraception as well as for circumventing the side effects of female hormonal contraceptives. Phosducin-like 2 (PDCL2) is a testis-specific phosphoprotein in mice and humans. We recently found that male PDCL2 knockout mice are sterile due to globozoospermia caused by impaired sperm head formation, indicating that PDCL2 is a potential target for male contraception. Herein, our study for the first time developed a biophysical assay for PDCL2 allowing us to screen a series of small molecules, to study structure-activity relationships, and to discover two PDCL2 binders …

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an impairing psychiatric condition affecting 1-2% of adults and youth. Cognitive-behavioral therapy with exposure and response prevention (CBT) is an efficacious intervention but requires specialty training and access is often limited. While certain factors are associated with treatment access, one key barrier that has not been explored is the geographic availability of OCD treatment providers. Using integrated geographically-referenced data, we examined the geographic distribution of OCD CBT specialty providers across the state of Texas, with particular attention to the relationship to neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage, insurance status, and rural versus urban status. We found that specialist providers are …

A PEG tube is an ideal option for enteral nutrition in patients with impaired swallowing or for nutrition optimization. After PEG tube removal, the tract usually closes spontaneously. However, persistent gastrocutaneous fistula (GCF) is a rare but well-known adverse event of long-term PEG tube use.1 Despite the evolution of endoscopic techniques over the last decade, such as over-the-scope clips (OTSCs), endoscopic suturing, and biosynthetic glue plaque, the management of GCF remains challenging.2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Although endoscopic suturing results in full-thickness closure of the gastric wall, persistent leakage from the cutaneous site may …

BACKGROUND: Despite encouraging results from clinical trials and in high-income countries, large-scale data on the effectiveness and safety of dolutegravir (DTG) in children and adolescents living with HIV (CALHIV) are lacking in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
METHODS: Retrospective analysis was performed among CALHIV 0-19 years old and weighing greater than or equal to 20 kg who received DTG from 2017 to 2020 at sites in Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda to determine effectiveness, safety and predictors of viral load suppression (VLS) among CALHIV using DTG, including through single drug substitutions (SDS).
RESULTS: Among 9419 CALHIV using DTG, …
