Special Education Diploma Acquisition And Transition Planning In Alternative School: An Authentic, Individualized Approach, Margaret Hoehn
Special Education Diploma Acquisition And Transition Planning In Alternative School: An Authentic, Individualized Approach, Margaret Hoehn
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Minnesota allows for students to graduate upon successful completion of their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals, colloquially known as an IEP-driven diploma or an “IEP diploma.” While districts and schools may have their own requirements for this process, guidance from the state only specifies that the IEP team facilitates this process and that annual IEP goals and supporting objectives should be written to support students’ transition goals. The planning framework at the center of this project is designed to support educators in developing culturally sustaining, student-centered goals and objectives for students with disabilities who are graduating via IEP-driven diplomas. It …

As children’s and teens’ internet use has reached record highs, the protection of their online privacy is a pressing issue for parents, consumer groups, social media firms, and federal, state, and international agencies. Even with strategies to help children protect their personal information, questions remain as to what children really know about the risks of interacting online. Thus far, much of the online privacy research has relied on subjective measures of adult beliefs and attitudes, which may not be predictive of children's online privacy behaviors. To address these issues, the authors develop and test a children's online privacy scale tapping …

Background and objectives: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are taking a toll on Africa’s youth at younger ages than in other regions. These are attributed to risk factors that usually advance in adolescence, such as unhealthy diets and reduced physical activity. Young adults in South Africa, particularly women, tend to be sedentary, consume energy-dense diets low in micronutrients, and are more likely to develop NCDs much earlier in life than those in high-income countries. With an intersectionality perspective, this study explored young adults’ barriers and solutions to addressing these risk factors in Soweto.
Setting: Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa, is one …

Bird conservation depends on robust data on the densities of and threats to each species, and an understanding of the choices and incentives of bird hunters. This first comprehensive study of bird hunting and its effects in Madagascar uses 8 years of data on 87 bird species to determine bird densities and hunting pressure, incentives, choices, methods, spatial variation, and sustainability on the Masoala Peninsula of Madagascar. We find that bird hunting is common, affecting human wellbeing and, for some species, long-term population viability. Hunters caught more abundant species of lower trophic levels and consumers preferred the flavor of abundant …

Improving Cold Tolerance Of Asian Rice Through Plant Growth Promoting Bacteria And Rice Gene Manipulation: Mechanisms Of Pseudomonas Mosselli And Osmads27, Nasim Maghboli Balasjin
Dissertations (1934 -)
It is estimated that by the year 2050, the human population will extend to 9.7 billion and therefore the demand for food will increase. It is important to find ways to maintain production of critical crops, like rice, to match the demand. Climate change affects crop productivity as it is the reason for extreme warm or cold weather fluctuations. Asian rice (Oryza sativa L.) generally is grown in tropical and subtropical regions and thus, is sensitive to cold temperatures. This study hypothesized two strategies could improve growth and cold tolerance of rice plants: (1) use of plant growth promoting bacteria …

The Effect Of Resource Quality And Species Interactions On Dermestes Maculatus, Sarah Aliahmad
The Effect Of Resource Quality And Species Interactions On Dermestes Maculatus, Sarah Aliahmad
Student Theses
Forensic entomology is the use and application of insect information in legal matters, particularly in death investigations as insects utilize decomposing remains as a food source to complete their life cycle. Dermestes maculatus (DeGeer), larder beetles belonging to the family Dermestidae, are of considerable forensic importance since their larvae are typically found on human corpses during the later stages of decomposition – the advanced and dry/skeletal stages. Dermestes maculatus can be useful in estimating the post-mortem interval (PMI) of a cadaver with advanced decomposition. The purpose of this study was to investigate the colonization (egg-laying) behavior of D. maculatus; …

Eosinophilic Esophagitis, Saad Alkhowaiter
Saudi Medical Journal
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an atopic disease in which eosinophils infiltrate the esophageal mucosa and may result in a variety of upper gastrointestinal symptoms. Chief among these are dysphagia, heartburn, and food bolus obstruction in adults whereas children often present with abdominal pain or vomiting. Eosinophilic esophagitis is a chronic condition that if not detected and left untreated could lead to the development of subepithelial fibrosis and esophageal stenosis. The diagnosis of EoE is confirmed in a patient presenting with characteristic EoE symptoms, classic signs on endoscopy, and biopsy results showing >15 eosinophils/hpf. A number of useful treatments against EoE …
Does Conditioning Cash Transfers On Health Treatment Harm The Health Of Other Families On Low Incomes Who Depend On Public Services? Evidence From Brazil, Marika Csapo
Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works
Motivation: Cash transfers have become popular for relieving poverty in the Global South. Many programmes are conditional on beneficiaries complying with medical check-ups, nutritional assessments, and vaccinations. Such conditions may improve the health of beneficiaries, above all the health of their young children. But often public health provision is strained. Might the increased attention to those getting the transfers reduce health services to non-beneficiaries, and especially those on low incomes who cannot afford private medicine?.
Purpose: What are the impacts of the largest and longest-lived conditional cash transfer programme in the world, Brazil's Bolsa Família (BF), on the health of …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Background
Postnatal growth failure in premature infants is associated with reduced lean mass accretion. Prematurity impairs the feeding-induced stimulation of translation initiation and protein synthesis in the skeletal muscle of neonatal pigs. The objective was to determine whether body weight independently contributes to the blunted postprandial protein synthesis.
Methods
Preterm and term pigs that were either fasted or fed were stratified into quartiles according to birth weight to yield preterm and term groups of similar body weight; first and second quartiles of preterm pigs and third and fourth quartiles of term pigs were compared (preterm-fasted, n = 23; preterm-fed, n …

Nucleus accumbens‐associated protein 1 (NAC1), a transcriptional cofactor, has been found to play important roles in regulating regulatory T cells, CD8 + T cells, and antitumor immunity, but little is known about its effects on T‐cell memory. In this study, we found that NAC1 expression restricts memory formation of CD4 + T cells during viral infection. Analysis of CD4 + T cells from wild‐type (WT) and NAC1‐ deficient (−/−) mice showed that NAC1 is essential for T‐cell metabolism, including glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation, and supports CD4 + T‐cell survival in vitro. We further demonstrated that a deficiency of NAC1 downregulates …

Effects Of Parenting And Self-Efficacy On Diet, Family Mealtime And Weight-Related Outcomes In African American Adolescents, Haylee Michele Loncar
Theses and Dissertations
Despite substantial research and concern, adolescent overweight and obesity continues to be a significant public health problem. Theory based on developmental literature emphasizes the role of adolescent self-regulatory factors, like self-efficacy, in health behavior engagement and weight-related outcomes. There is also extensive literature that highlights parents’ role in promoting self-regulatory development through warm and responsive behaviors and practices. However, few studies have considered longitudinal associations and changes in weight-related outcomes over time, as well as moderated effects by parenting.
