An Investigation Into How The Intense Nature Of Youth Sport Participation Influences Women’S Collegiate Basketball Player’S Experiences Of Burnout, Hana M. Adent

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

One area of athlete well-being garnering increasing attention is athletes’ experience of burnout (Gould & Whitley, 2009). According to Coakley (1992), burnout is a social phenomenon grounded in a set of social relations through which young athletes become disempowered in their sport participation that can lead to fatigue and dropout. Therefore, efforts to reduce athletes’ likelihood of experiencing burnout are important. Often overlooked in the college athlete literature are the experiences of college athletes in youth sport. Yet almost all college athletes participate in competitive youth sport. Therefore, in seeking to further our understanding of college athletes’ burnout experience, it …

Examining Potential Trade-Offs Between Pest Management And Pollination To Sunflower Production In Nebraska, Luis Ochoa Cadena

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is cultivated for oil and seed production worldwide, and the United States produces 2.5% of the world’s oilseed sunflower primarily grown in the Great Plains. In 2022, oilseed and confectionary U.S. sunflower production increased by 48 and 44%, respectively, compared to last year's records. However, sunflower production can be seriously compromised by insect pests. The red sunflower seed weevil (Smicronyx fulvus LeConte) is considered the most serious pests in North America and causes severe economic damage yearly. On the other hand, native bees contribute substantially to sunflower yield. Currently, insecticide applications are the primary tool to suppress …

Attitudes Towards Public Basic Needs Programs: An Analysis Of Question Order Effect, Period And Cohort Changes, And Differences Across Religious Traditions, Jamy K. Rentschler

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation examines public opinions towards public basic needs programs (PBNPs), focusing specifically on differences in attitudes towards spending on assistance to the poor (ATP) and welfare. To do this, I use two different approaches, one focusing on survey methodology and the other looking at social change across time and religious tradition. The first research question addresses potential survey question order effects based upon which question came first, ATP or welfare, and examines how other federal spending priorities may impact opinions towards welfare. I do find question order effects, some of which vary based on the respondent’s race, but the …

No Strong Evidence Of The Protein Leverage Hypothesis In Pregnant Women With Obesity And Their Infants, Maryam Kebbe, Jasper Most, Abby D. Altazan, Leanne M. Redman

Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Objective: The goal of this study was to investigate the role of dietary protein on macronutrient and energy intake, maternal adiposity during pregnancy, and infant adiposity at birth. Methods: In 41 women with obesity, early-pregnancy (13–16 weeks) protein intake was assessed with food photography and expressed as a ratio of Estimated Average Requirements (EAR) in pregnancy for protein (0.88 g/kg/d), herein “protein balance.” Energy intake was measured by the intake-balance method, gestational weight gain as grams per week, and fat mass by a three-compartment model. Spearman correlations and linear models were computed using R version 4.1.1 (p < 0.05 considered significant). Results: Women had a mean (SD) age of 27.5 (4.8) years and a pregravid BMI of 34.4 (2.9), kg/m2, and the majority were non-White (n = 23, 56.1%). Protein balance in early pregnancy was not significantly associated with energy intake across mid and mid/late pregnancy (β = 328.7, p = 0.30 and β = 286.2, p = 0.26, respectively) or gestational weight gain (β = 117.0, p = 0.41). Protein balance was inversely associated with fat mass in early, mid, and late pregnancy (β = −10.6, p = 0.01, β = −10.4, p = 0.03, β = −10.3, p = 0.03, respectively). Protein balance did not predict infant adiposity at birth (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Low …

Investigating And Characterizing Septin Cellular Regulators During Infection Related Development In M. Oryzae, Rinalda Proko Aug 2023

Investigating And Characterizing Septin Cellular Regulators During Infection Related Development In M. Oryzae, Rinalda Proko

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The fungus Magnaporthe oryzae causes a devastating disease of rice and wheat, called blast, which poses a major threat to food security across the planet. To enter plant tissue, M. oryzae produces a remarkable pressure-generating infection cell called an appressorium, which mechanically ruptures the tough cuticle of host leaves through the application of enormous physical force directed onto a narrow penetration structure emerging from its base. Importantly, appressorium form and functionality depends on the regulated assembly of a toroidal ring-like structure, composed of septins, which forms within its base. Septins are a family of membrane-associated GTP-binding proteins that polymerize into …

Dietary Effects On Cardiac Lipid Composition And Subsequent Phenotype In The American Lobster (Homarus Americanus), Melissa Colette Butler

All Theses And Dissertations

Lipids are fundamental components of many biological structures and compositions of these molecular species can alter with diet. Differences in lipid membrane composition can impact the functioning of membranes and proteins subsequently altering the organism’s ability to respond to stressful conditions. American lobsters (Homarus americanus) are an economically important shellfish in New England and are sometimes kept intermittently in lobster impoundments (pounds) for months where they are often fed herring, which differs from the assumed natural diet of wild-caught lobsters. In this study, we compared the lipid composition of lobsters obtained from the wild and pounds that were …

Effects Of Circadian Rhythm Disruption And Social Jetlag On The Cardiometabolic Adaptations To Exercise, Michael Bevan Dial Aug 2023

Effects Of Circadian Rhythm Disruption And Social Jetlag On The Cardiometabolic Adaptations To Exercise, Michael Bevan Dial

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Circadian rhythms lie within every tissue and cell and regulate cellular and tissue processes and functions based upon the time of day. Disrupting the circadian clock results in impaired tissue and organ activity and higher risk of cardiometabolic diseases. A common form of circadian rhythm disruption is social jetlag (SJL), which represents the misalignment of sleep and wake times on free days and work days (i.e. weekend). The time of day of exercise affects the adaptations that are derived from exercise. Within the heart muscle, disparate levels of exercise-induced hypertrophy, circadian clock gene expression, and mitochondrial content were all dependent …

Exogenous Exposure To Dihydroxyacetone Mimics High Fructose Induced Oxidative Stress And Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Raj Mehta Aug 2023

Exogenous Exposure To Dihydroxyacetone Mimics High Fructose Induced Oxidative Stress And Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Raj Mehta

Honors Theses

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a three-carbon sugar that is the active ingredient in sunless tanning products and a by-product of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) combustion. Increased use of sunless tanning products and e-cigarettes has elevated exposures to DHA through inhalation and absorption. Studies have confirmed that DHA is rapidly absorbed into cells and can enter into metabolic pathways following phosphorylation to dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP), a product of fructose metabolism. Recent reports have suggested metabolic imbalance and cellular stress results from DHA exposures. However, the impact of elevated exposure to DHA on human health is currently under-investigated. We propose that exogenous exposures to …

Functional Analysis Of Two Campoletis Sonorensis Ichnovirus Vinnexins In Drosophila Melanogaster, Peng Zhang Aug 2023

Functional Analysis Of Two Campoletis Sonorensis Ichnovirus Vinnexins In Drosophila Melanogaster, Peng Zhang

All Dissertations

Campoletis sonorensis Ichnovirus (CsIV) is produced by the ichneumonid parasitoid Campoletis sonorensis (the primary host). Female parasitoid wasps restrictedly replicate viruses in their ovaries and inject them into a larval lepidopteran (secondary host) during oviposition. This symbiotic virus of C. sonorensis is essential for successful parasitization. CsIV is characterized by having a large, segmented double-stranded DNA genome with a large number of genes, many of which are associated with one of five multigene families. The CsIV vinnexin gene family is one of them and has four members, including CsIV-vnxD and CsIV-vnxG. Vinnexins are homologues of insect Innexins, which form gap …

Although the vast majority of recognized pediatric upper gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) resolves spontaneously, gastrointestinal hemorrhage is the most common indication for urgent or emergent therapeutic endoscopy in pediatric practice. The application of hemostatic powders, including TC-325 (Hemospray, Cook Medical, Winston-Salem, NC, USA), has shown considerable impact on the control of acute bleeding, with the advantage of potentially covering an extensive area and requiring less technical expertise. We report a case of transient adherence of an esophagogastroduodenoscopy following Hemospray application in a 22-month-old with upper GIB. Our experience does not detract from the significant gains in the management of pediatric GIB …
