Integrated Healthcare In The U.S. Safety-Net System: Meeting The Needs Of Patients Through Comprehensive Medical And Social Care, Jacqueline Devaney Aug 2023

Integrated Healthcare In The U.S. Safety-Net System: Meeting The Needs Of Patients Through Comprehensive Medical And Social Care, Jacqueline Devaney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This thesis examines how a Patient-Centered Medical Home addresses, implements, and provides medical and social resources and services within the Florida U.S. safety-net system, and how patients and providers perceive health care interactions between each other. The safety-net clinics seek to fill the care gap for millions of uninsured low-income U.S. residents who cannot afford private insurance, are unemployed, self-employed, undocumented, or their low income exceeds the qualification threshold, and they face barriers in accessing expensive medical care in the U.S. I have conducted ethnographic research at Grace Medical Home, a safety-net clinic in Central Florida, which included five months …

In Stable Phase Copd Patients Does Oral Magnesium Supplementation Vs Nothing Decrease The Number Of Copd Related Hospitalizations?, Georgina Garvey Aug 2023

In Stable Phase Copd Patients Does Oral Magnesium Supplementation Vs Nothing Decrease The Number Of Copd Related Hospitalizations?, Georgina Garvey

Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies Capstone Presentations (Center City)

Introduction

- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive respiratory disease that leads to significant morbidity and mortality. Magnesium deficiency is known to lead to increased risk of both respiratory and cardiovascular diseases1. This deficiency can lead to an inflammatory state and increased bronchoconstriction that would exacerbate a disease state like COPD.2 Magnesium deficiency is seen in aging populations and those with chronic diseases3 and has also been seen in the population of patients coming into the emergency room with acute exacerbations of COPD.4

- Treatment with IV magnesium has been shown to be efficacious in …

Examining The Impact Of Covid-19 On Elementary-Aged Minoritized Students, Ashlynn Ramirez Aug 2023

Examining The Impact Of Covid-19 On Elementary-Aged Minoritized Students, Ashlynn Ramirez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The Coronavirus Disease [COVID-19] pandemic was a public health crisis. As of January 2022, there were over 314 million infections and over 5.5 million deaths (Assefa et al., 2022). Unfortunately, COVID-19 disproportionately impacted minoritized populations. This study will investigate the relationship between COVID-19 and the impact on minoritized students attending Title I elementary schools in one urban school district. According to Lopez-Ibor (2006), "disasters are diverse events as a consequence of a danger that affects social groups and produces material and human losses resulting in insufficient resources of the community and insufficient coping through social mechanisms" (p. 22). COVID-19 affected …

Learning Gains Post Covid-19 Disruption: The Predictive Value Of Sense Of Belonging, Teacher Efficacy, And School Fit, Deborah Izzo Aug 2023

Learning Gains Post Covid-19 Disruption: The Predictive Value Of Sense Of Belonging, Teacher Efficacy, And School Fit, Deborah Izzo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The study explores predictive associations between student perceptions of a sense of belonging, teacher perceptions of teaching efficacy, family perceptions of school fit, and academic growth within a post-COVID-19 shutdown landscape. Learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic instructional disruption can have long-lasting impacts, necessitating instructional interventions that aim to close learning gaps and increase learning gains (UNESCO, 2020). Drawing from 5 global datasets, the World Bank simulation conducted in 2021 projected a COVID-19 school closure learning loss range of .3 to 1.1 years, the range attributed to 4 possible scenarios with converse intervals of closure and effectiveness of mitigation …

Assessing The Barriers To Reintegration Among Returnees In Nigeria, Itunu Ilesanmi Aug 2023

Assessing The Barriers To Reintegration Among Returnees In Nigeria, Itunu Ilesanmi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Reintegration for internally displaced returnees in Nigeria needs improvement due to the barrier returnees encounter when returning to their communities of origin. As a path to recovery following the unsettling experiences of generalized violence caused by Boko Haram terrorist attacks in Northeastern Nigeria, there is a need for best practices to mitigate challenges during reintegration for internally displaced returnees. With an estimated 2.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Northeastern Nigeria at the end of 2022, 1.98 million have returned to their prior residence, where they must cope and survive while attempting to reintegrate without effective and efficient support to …

How Plants Cope With Stress, Nabila Riaz Aug 2023

How Plants Cope With Stress, Nabila Riaz

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Iron (Fe) is one of the essential micronutrients required by both plants and animals. In humans, Fe deficiency causes anemia, the most prevalent nutritional disorder in the world today. Most people rely on plant-based foods as their major Fe source, but plants are a poor source of dietary Fe.

Fe deficiency has many adverse effects on photosynthesis, which is not surprising given that 95% of foliar Fe is found in chloroplast. The Gueirnot lab had previously showed that the bHLH transcription factors ILR3 and PYE are required for photoprotection during Fe deficiency by preventing ROS damage to photosystem II (PSII). …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

The advances in cancer research achieved in the last 50 years have been remarkable and have provided a deeper knowledge of this disease in many of its conceptual and biochemical aspects. From viewing a tumor as a 'simple' aggregate of mutant cells and focusing on detecting key cell changes leading to the tumorigenesis, the understanding of cancer has broadened to consider it as a complex organ interacting with its close and far surroundings through tumor and non-tumor cells, metabolic mechanisms, and immune processes. Metabolism and the immune system have been linked to tumorigenesis and malignancy progression along with cancer-specific genetic …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of the research was to investigate the effects of different stocking densities on fattening performance, slaughter, carcass, meat quality characteristics, and fatty acid composition in New Zealand rabbits raised in cage conditions and also determine the ideal housing frequency so that yields were not adversely affected. In the study, 36 New Zealand rabbits were used. After weaning, the fattening was started and rabbits were put into cages at different stocking densities as 1 rabbit/cage, 2 rabbits/cage, and 3 rabbits/ cage. The live weight of rabbits and feed consumption data were taken every week. At the end of 8 …

Protein-Energy Malnutrition Is Associated With Worse Outcomes In Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: A Nationwide Analysis, Favour Markson, Emmanuel Akuna, Iriagbonse Asemota, Gabriel Areoye, Anoz Shahi, Praise Nwachukwu, Kenneth Ong Aug 2023

Protein-Energy Malnutrition Is Associated With Worse Outcomes In Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: A Nationwide Analysis, Favour Markson, Emmanuel Akuna, Iriagbonse Asemota, Gabriel Areoye, Anoz Shahi, Praise Nwachukwu, Kenneth Ong

Einstein Health Papers

Protein–energy malnutrition (PEM), which leads to a reduced ability of tissues to regenerate and repair themselves, may exacerbate many chronic diseases, including atrial fibrillation (AF), which occurs as a response of the heart to chronic inflammation. However, population-based studies examining the association between PEM and the prevalence and health care burden of AF are lacking. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to estimate the impact of PEM on the prevalence and clinical outcomes of hospitalization for AF. The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) 2016 and 2017 datasets were searched for data on hospitalized adult patients with AF as a …

Biofilm Detachment As A Passive Method To Survive Bacterial Predation, Alice Wren Goldstein-Plesser Aug 2023

Biofilm Detachment As A Passive Method To Survive Bacterial Predation, Alice Wren Goldstein-Plesser

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Bacterial biofilms are held together by various, often species specific, secreted proteins, polysaccharides, and DNA – collectively termed the biofilm matrix. Although biofilms have many fitness advantages conferred to them, matrix mutants are abundant within natural isolates, implying context-dependent disadvantages inherent to the production of some matrix components. Here we explore how biofilm architecture controls a tradeoff in the context of different predation pressures. The model organism Escherichia coli is used as a prey species, due to its highly characterized protection against bacteriophages, and the motile bacterial predator Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus as the predatory exposure. We use microfluidics paired with confocal …

Induction Of Ploidy Level On Three Patchouli (Pogostemon Cablin Benth) Cultivars By Colchicine In Vitro, Suseno Amien, Nikkita Putri Darmawan, Daniya Fathya

Jurnal Kultivasi

Patchouli plants produce essential oils and are used as a raw material and fixative agent for perfumes. The most widely cultivated patchouli plant in Indonesia is Aceh patchouli. Sexual propagation in Aceh patchouli plants is impossible as it does not flower. Genetic diversity can be elevated through another method, such as polyploidy induction using colchicine. This research aimed to evaluate the state-of-the-art application of polyploidization techniques as a breeding tool for callus-based explants. A completely randomized design with a factorial pattern was used in this experiment consisting of two factors, patchouli cultivars (Sidikalang, Tapak Tuan, and Lhokseumawe) and colchicine concentration …

Jurnal Kultivasi

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) belongs to multipurpose crops. All parts of sorghum can be used both as main products and derivative products; some derivative products produced from the sorghum plant consist of sugar, bioethanol, biomass, handicraft raw materials and starch. This study aims to determine the time required for testing the vigor and viability of sorghum seeds using the electrical conductivity and radicle emergence methods. The study was conducted in two experimental stages using a completely randomized design. The first experiment consisted of two factors: the number of sorghum seeds (40, 70 and 100 grains) and the volume of …
