Arabidopsis Thaliana Growth More Than Defense Affects Myzus Persicae Populations, Biran S. Falk-Dotan, Mindy Chapman, Nafis Wazed, Chad T. Harvey

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

Aphids and other herbivorous insects are able to travel between plants in their environment. While plants cannot directly choose their consumers, they may stop or mitigate the harmful effects of herbivory using secondary metabolites. A salicylic acid (SA) pathway facilitates defense from biotrophic fungi and some necrotrophic pathogens, while a jasmonic acid (JA) pathway is associated with defense from other necrotrophic pathogens and chewing insects. We investigated the effect of deficiency in SA or JA in Arabidopsis thaliana on plant growth and on herbivory by green peach aphids (Myzus persicae). Three ascensions of A. thaliana were placed in two blocks …

The Geography Of Food Cooperatives In The United States, Seth T. Young

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

For our society to become sustainably viable in the future, the ways in which we obtain our food and the methods used to create that food will be very important. One of the most environmentally friendly methods of food obtainment is membership in a food cooperative. This research delves into the basics of food cooperatives, highlights similar studies of other sustainability indicators, and examines the geographic distribution of food co-ops across the United States.Faculty Sponsor: Dr. George Pomeroy

Pluralism And Foundationalism In The Applied Sciences, David Baker Oct 2023

Pluralism And Foundationalism In The Applied Sciences, David Baker

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

Nancy Cartwright develops her scientific pluralism within The Dappled World and argues for its supremacy over foundationalism. Cartwright believes that the sciences should be applied for humane benefits and not for knowledge’s sake alone. However, Cartwright does not give enough credit to the practical applications produced by foundationalists. Cartwright’s goals are not hindered or detracted from when working with foundationalists. In fact foundationalism and pluralism offer complimentary means of practical application, the outcome of which is a bettered ability to apply our sciences towards practical concerns than either position offers alone. I will use exemplary cases demonstrating these isolated shortcomings …

A Critical Exploration Of The Diets Of Uk Disadvantaged Communities To Inform Food Systems Transformation: A Scoping Review Of Qualitative Literature Using A Social Practice Theory Lens, Louise Hunt, Clare Pettinger, Carol Wagstaff

School of Health Professions

The UK food system affects social, economic and natural environments and features escalating risk of food insecurity. Yet it should provide access to safe, nutritious, affordable food for all citizens. Disadvantaged UK communities [individuals and families at risk of food and housing insecurity, often culturally diverse] have often been conceptualised in terms of individual behaviour which may lead to findings and conclusions based on the need for individual change. Such communities face public health challenges and are often treated as powerless recipients of dietary and health initiatives or as ‘choiceless’ consumers within food supply chains. As transforming the UK food …

Novel Treatments For Pxe: Targeting The Systemic And Local Drivers Of Ectopic Calcification, Ida Joely Jacobs, Qiaoli Li

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a heritable multisystem ectopic calcification disorder. The gene responsible for PXE, ABCC6, encodes ABCC6, a hepatic efflux transporter regulating extracellular inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi), a potent endogenous calcification inhibitor. Recent studies demonstrated that in addition to the deficiency of plasma PPi, the activated DDR/PARP signaling in calcified tissues provides an additional possible mechanism of ectopic calcification in PXE. This study examined the effects of etidronate (ETD), a stable PPi analog, and its combination with minocycline (Mino), a potent inhibitor of DDR/PARP, on ectopic calcification in an Abcc6-/- mouse model of PXE. Abcc6-/- mice, at 4 weeks of …

Developing A Child-Friendly Outdoor Public Playground For Children Aged 4-8, Through Co-Creation Mindset, Neda Batenipour

IASDR Conference Series

Outdoor playgrounds, as part of urban space, with their equipment/settings play an important role in child development. For designing a child-friendly playground, looking at a playground through the eyes of children as end users should be of prime importance for designers. This study presents a new framework and methodology for exploring design parameters based on users’ real needs and wants and finally designs a child-friendly outdoor public playground for children aged 4-8 years old. Existing problems, gaps, and opportunities in Wuppertal’s playgrounds – especially in the Nordbahntrasse and Parkour Park area – provide the rationale and need, as well as …

Food deserts are areas that lack the availability of fresh, affordable, and nutritious foods. Almost half of the food in the United States of America is wasted every year, yet somehow there are thousands of food deserts. This lack of nutritious food for people of all ages negatively impacts health outcomes as chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are rising quickly. Preventive care is a practice in which patients take the initiative to make healthier choices in life to prevent the onset or progression of chronic illness. An example of such initiatives is eating and preparing more nutritious …

Design-Driven Poverty Alleviation: An Approach That Turns Poverty Alleviation From A Cost Perspective To A Resource Perspective, Yuhui Jin, Peng Xu

IASDR Conference Series

[Background & Challenges] Traditional poverty alleviation is a high-cost matter. In many cases, poverty alleviation is regarded as a ‘cost’ that a society needs to pay. However, the existing practices of Design for Poverty Alleviation still focused more on the application of product design and appearance improvement and had not fully tapped the potential of Design. [Objective] This study aims to use Design at a higher level to turn poverty alleviation from a ‘social cost’ to an ‘innovative resource’. [Method & Outcomes] This paper applies the Action Research method to propose and test the Design-driven Poverty Alleviation (DDPA) Framework, which …

Introducing Hope In Design For Health And Well-Being, Arefe Jasbi, Marikken Høiseth

IASDR Conference Series

Health and well-being are fundamental aspects of life, directly impacting the quality of life. Hope is a phenomenon that significantly relates to the quality of life. The purpose of this paper is to introduce hope in the context of design for health and well-being. By exploring the intersection of design, health, and hope, we can create outcomes that are not only functional and address immediate needs but also increase resilience and foster a sense of optimism and empowerment to users and communities. We provide reflections on how this elevation in design can cultivate strengthened communities through improved healthcare interventions.
