The Impact Of Green Public Procurement In Western Balkan Countries, Ditjona Kule, Irisi Beleraj
UBT International Conference
The sensitivity to environmental preservation toward ethical and sustainable economic growth has been at an all-time high in recent decades. Green public procurement (GPP) is a procedure in which public entities, such as governments or municipalities, purchase goods and services that have a lower environmental effect than conventional alternatives. GPP is gaining popularity in the Western Balkans as a strategy for promoting sustainable development and addressing environmental issues.
The demand for recyclable products, energy-efficient systems, clean technology and fuels, is driving the adoption of ecologically responsible business practices. Private consumers are also encouraged to focus on green purchases. Considering that …

Diversity Operators-Based Artificial Fish Swarm Algorithm To Solve Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem, Alaa Wagih Abdulqader, Sura Mazin Ali
Baghdad Science Journal
Artificial fish swarm algorithm (AFSA) is one of the critical swarm intelligent algorithms. In this paper, the authors decide to enhance AFSA via diversity operators (AFSA-DO). The diversity operators will be producing more diverse solutions for AFSA to obtain reasonable resolutions. AFSA-DO has been used to solve flexible job shop scheduling problems (FJSSP). However, the FJSSP is a significant problem in the domain of optimization and operation research. Several research papers dealt with methods of solving this issue, including forms of intelligence of the swarms. In this paper, a set of FJSSP target samples are tested employing the improved algorithm …

Glucose metabolism is critical for the African trypanosome, Trypanosoma brucei, serving as the lone source of ATP production for the bloodstream form (BSF) parasite in the glucose-rich environment of the host blood. Recently, phosphonate inhibitors of human enolase (ENO), the enzyme responsible for the interconversion of 2-phosphoglycerate (2-PG) to phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) in glycolysis or PEP to 2-PG in gluconeogenesis, have been developed for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Here, we have tested these agents against T. brucei ENO (TbENO) and found the compounds to be potent enzyme inhibitors and trypanocides. For example, (1-hydroxy-2-oxopyrrolidin-3-yl) phosphonic acid (deoxy-SF2312) …

Bidirectional signal transduction between tumor epithelial cells and tumor microenvironment (TME) is important for tumor development. Here we show that Lin28b/let-7 pathway is indispensable for modulating the expression of Wnt5a in tumor epithelium, which could be secreted and then up-regulates Lin28b in cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). Moreover, we demonstrate that Lin28b in CAFs promoted growth of PDAC by inducing cytokine PCSK9's production. Using an orthotopic mouse model of PDAC, we find that depletion of Lin28b in CAFs reduced tumor weight, highlighting the importance of Lin28b in PDAC stroma. Thus, our study shows that the Lin28b-Wnt5a axis plays a critical role in …

Baghdad Science Journal
Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a potent vasoconstrictor hormone that has been identified as an important factor responsible for the development of cardiovascular dysfunctions. ET-1 exerts its vasoconstrictor activity through two pharmacologically distinct receptors, ETA and ETB that are found in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and the vasodilator activity through an ETB receptor located on endothelial cells. This study aimed to show the impact of 1µM L-arginine (LA), 100µM tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), and their combined effect on ET-1 activity in both lead-treated and lead-untreated rat aortic rings. This means, investigating how endothelial dysfunction reverses the role of nitric oxide precursor and cofactor. …

Although the past two decades have produced exciting discoveries in the genetics and pathology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), progress in developing an effective therapy remains slow. This review summarizes the critical discoveries and outlines the advances in disease characterization, diagnosis, imaging, and biomarkers, along with the current status of approaches to ALS care and treatment. Additional knowledge of the factors driving disease progression and heterogeneity will hopefully soon transform the care for patients with ALS into an individualized, multi-prong approach able to prevent disease progression sufficiently to allow for a dignified life with limited disability.

Cancer cachexia (CC) is a multifactorial wasting syndrome characterized by a significant loss in lean and/or fat mass and represents a leading cause of mortality in cancer patients. Nutraceutical treatments have been proposed as a potential treatment strategy to mitigate cachexia-induced muscle wasting. However, contradictory findings warrant further investigation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of leucine supplementation on skeletal muscle in male and female ApcMin/+ mice (APC). APC mice and their wild-type (WT) littermates were given normal drinking water or 1.5% leucine-supplemented water (n = 4–10/group/sex). We measured the gene expression of regulators of …

Physical Decline Rates: Men Versus Women, Ray C. Fair
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper uses world records by age in running, swimming, and rowing to estimate a biological frontier of decline rates for both men and women. Decline rates are assumed to be linear in percent terms up to a certain age and then quadratic after that, where the transition age is estimated. For both men and women decline rates are smallest for rowing, followed by swimming and then running.
Decline rates for women are roughly the same as those for men for the short swimming events. They are slightly larger for the longer swimming events and for the rowing events. They …
