Rooted In Meaning: Plant Iconography On Nasca Polychrome Ceramics, Amanda G. Lange

Theses

This thesis explores the Nasca use of plant iconography as part of their polychrome ceramics produced at the end of the Early Horizon around 100 BCE to those produced in the beginning and middle of the Early Intermediate Period circa 1to 450 CE. During this time the religious site of Cahuachi was in use as a pilgrimage center as well as the production center of polychrome pottery. The Nasca created their colorful ceramics here to distribute to visiting pilgrims during times of festival or ritual. The culture’s iconography has been studied extensively, most of which focuses on the forms of …

PURPOSE. Patients deficient in peroxisomal β-oxidation, which is essential for the synthesis of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n-3) and breakdown of very-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLC-PUFAs), both important components of photoreceptor outer segments, develop retinopathy present with retinopathy. The representative mouse model lacking the central enzyme of this pathway, multifunctional protein 2 (Mfp2−/−), also show early-onset retinal decay and cell-autonomous retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) degeneration, accompanied by reduced plasma and retinal DHA levels. In this study, we investigated whether DHA supplementation can rescue the retinal degeneration of Mfp2−/− mice. METHODS. Mfp2+/− breeding pairs and their offspring were fed a 0.12% DHA …

Incorporating Over-The-Counter Hearing Aids Into Private Audiology Practice, Ryan K. Anderson Nov 2023

Incorporating Over-The-Counter Hearing Aids Into Private Audiology Practice, Ryan K. Anderson

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids are a new category of hearing aid devices designed to help adults with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss. This new category of devices was created with the aim to provide increased access to hearing aids for millions of Americans. Their advent has created significant change for hearing healthcare within the United States as they can be purchased without consulting an audiologist or medical professional.

As a result of these changes, private audiology practice owners must choose how they will react. Moving forward they must decide if they will integrate OTC hearing aids into their practices, …

Effects Of Jaw Clenching And Mental Stress On Persistent Inward Currents Estimated By Two Different Methods, Ricardo N. O. Mesquita, Janet L. Taylor, Gabriel S. Trajano, Aleš Holobar, Basílio A. M. Gonçalves, Anthony J. Blazevich

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Spinal motoneuron firing depends greatly on persistent inward currents (PICs), which in turn are facilitated by the neuromodulators serotonin and noradrenaline. The aim of this study was to determine whether jaw clenching (JC) and mental stress (MS), which may increase neuromodulator release, facilitate PICs in human motoneurons. The paired motor unit (MU) technique was used to estimate PIC contribution to motoneuron firing. Surface electromyograms were collected using a 32-channel matrix on gastrocnemius medialis (GM) during voluntary, ramp, plantar flexor contractions. MU discharges were identified, and delta frequency ( F), a measure of recruitment–derecruitment hysteresis, was calculated. Additionally, another technique was …

Tame The Flame: Inflammation Is A Targetable Physiological Mechanism Underlying Poor Outcomes Of Heat Stress In Finishing Sheep, Pablo C. Grijalva

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This research focused on health management through the identification of suitable interventions in stressed livestock. For this investigation, we conducted two experiments. First, we determined whether administration of dexamethasone or fish oil to heat-stressed livestock to reduce systemic inflammation would mitigate metabolic deficits, enhance nutrient utilization, and improve health. We found that these interventions helped to reduce circulating inflammatory cytokines and improve respiration, muscle glucose metabolism, lipid homeostasis, cardiovascular function, and organ pathology in lambs exposed to 30 days of heat stress. In our second experiment, we performed transcriptomic analyses to identify the underlying mechanisms affecting young offspring following prenatal …

Characterization And Evaluation Of Bioactivity Of Dry Edible Bean And Bean Derived Small Peptides, Bikram Prasad Upadhyaya

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Obesity, diabetes, and their metabolic complications continue to be one of the major global public health concerns with a few effective treatment options. Although regular exercise and a well-balanced diet that includes calories from pulses can be recommended, much remains to be elucidated about the health effects of the various bioactive compounds including peptides and polyphenols present in pulses. Most of the previous studies have focused on individual dietary compounds and only a few investigated the synergistic effect of active compounds in modulating human health. Hence this dissertation aimed first, to provide a comparative evaluation of the overall therapeutic value …

RESULTS: Mixed linear regression models showed no association between ferritin and RET-He at both early (β = 0.0016, p = 0.40) and late (β = -0.0001, p = 0.96) time points. Positive associations were observed between RET-He and MCV at …

Improving Yield And Profit In Smallholder Oil Palm Fields Through Better Agronomy, Hendra Sugianto Nov 2023

Improving Yield And Profit In Smallholder Oil Palm Fields Through Better Agronomy, Hendra Sugianto

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Oil palm accounts for 40% of global vegetable oil production and Indonesia contributed 59% of the total production, with total planted area nearly 15 M ha in 2020. About 40% of the planted area is managed and owned by smallholders, and two thirds of them are independent, they are not bounded to a large plantation. Current efforts to increase yield of independent smallholder (ISH) fields focus on replanting programs promoting use of certified planting material, with little attention to improve management practices, in particular, plant nutrition. Here we investigated the degree to which poor nutrition can explain large yield gaps …

A Critical Exploration Of Unequal School Funding: Teacher Job Satisfaction Across Underfunded And Well-Funded Schools, David Tomasic Nov 2023

A Critical Exploration Of Unequal School Funding: Teacher Job Satisfaction Across Underfunded And Well-Funded Schools, David Tomasic

Theses & Dissertations

Unequal school funding is a phenomenon that promotes an educational structure where certain public schools receive higher financial support and resources while other schools receive lower levels. An important but overlooked dimension of the phenomenon is its potential effect on teacher job satisfaction in underfunded and well-funded schools. This dimension forms the basis of this study and exploration of the phenomenon of unequal school funding. Using Susan Moore Johnson's framework, this qualitative phenomenological study aimed to understand how unequal school funding affected nine high school teachers across both under and well-funded high schools on Long Island. The study sought to …

Here we develop two new social indices: The ADA PARC Absolute Economic Opportunity Index and the ADA PARC Relative Economic Opportunity Index. These indices allow us novel examinations of economic equity between people with and without disabilities within a U.S. State and between people with disabilities in different states using aggregations of multiple component economic indicators. These represent the first efforts to offer U.S. indices of this focus, an important development given the distinct economic needs of people with disabilities and the value in accounting for distinct national policies. The indices rely on U.S. Census and other data on economic …

Acute Hepatic Porphyrias: Recommendations For Diagnosis And Management With Real-World Examples, Akshata Moghe, Amy Dickey, Angelika Erwin, Rebecca K. Leaf, Alan O'Brien, John G. Quigley, Manish Thapar, Karl E. Anderson

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers

Acute hepatic porphyria (AHP) is a group of four rare inherited diseases, each resulting from a deficiency in a distinct enzyme in the heme biosynthetic pathway. Characterized by acute neurovisceral symptoms that may mimic other medical and psychiatric conditions, lack of recognition of the disease often leads to a delay in diagnosis and initiation of effective treatment. Biochemical testing for pathway intermediates that accumulate when the disease is active forms the basis for screening and establishing a diagnosis. Subsequent genetic analysis identifies the pathogenic variant, supporting screening of family members and genetic counseling. Management of AHP involves avoidance of known …

This paper presents versatile protocols to prepare primary human Schwann cell (hSC) cultures from mature peripheral nervous system tissues, including fascicles from long spinal nerves, nerve roots, and ganglia. This protocol starts with a description of nerve tissue procurement, handling, and dissection to obtain tissue sections suitable for hSC isolation and culturing. A description follows on how to disintegrate the nerve tissue by delayed enzymatic dissociation, plate the initial cell suspensions on a two-dimensional substrate, and culture the primary hSCs. Each section contains detailed procedures, technical notes, and background information to aid investigators in understanding and managing all steps. Some …

Combatting A Crisis Of Global Food Protectionism Sparked By The War In Ukraine, Daniel C.K. Chow, Ian M. Sheldon Nov 2023

Combatting A Crisis Of Global Food Protectionism Sparked By The War In Ukraine, Daniel C.K. Chow, Ian M. Sheldon

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The world is currently gripped in a food crisis of historic proportions that is threatening tens of millions of people in the poorest countries of the world with famine and starvation. Sparked by the war in Ukraine, this crisis is being made worse by nations imposing export restrictions on food in a misguided attempt to curb soaring domestic food prices. Export restrictions are "beggar-thy-neighbor" policies that prevent increases in domestic food prices but at the expense of raising world prices, exacerbating the crisis. Although nations have turned to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for help in removing these export restrictions, …

Construction Of Esg Evaluation Index System Of State-Owned Listed Companies: Analysis Based On The Perspective Of Comprehensive Corporate Value, Yiping Sun

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In this paper, I explore the applicability of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) evaluation systems to Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs). I assess these ESG evaluation systems in terms of the overall value of Chinese SOEs and point out that these enterprises do not have their own evaluation system. Establishing an ESG system for Chinese SOEs can encourage them to disclose quantifiable indicators, thus objectively demonstrating their comprehensive ESG performance and helping to enhance their overall value. I examine the current ESG evaluation systems in detail and find that there are many problems in applying the main international evaluation systems to …

The Health Effects Of Climate Change: Experiences Of Young People In Bangladesh, Guatemala, And Nigeria, Population Council, Women Deliver

Adolescents and Young People

Climate change is affecting the health and well-being of adolescents and young people (AYP) worldwide. This happens through direct exposure pathways but mainly indirectly, by influencing economic and food insecurity, access to health services, and harmful gender norms and social inequalities. According to a recent meta-analysis of 130 studies, climate change disproportionately harms the health of women and girls, especially younger generations. There are intergenerational inequities in exposure to climate extremes. A child born in 2020 will face an up to sevenfold increase in extreme climate events compared to one born in 1960. These events will have cascading harms and …
