A Dynamic Duo: Investigating The Interactions Between Xanthomonas Citri Pv. Malvacearum And Pseudomonas Syringae, Taylor Harris
A Dynamic Duo: Investigating The Interactions Between Xanthomonas Citri Pv. Malvacearum And Pseudomonas Syringae, Taylor Harris
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Bacterial pathogens threaten crop production worldwide, which highlights the need to understand plant and pathogen interactions. Studies on plant-pathogen interactions typically focus on a single host and pathogen. However, bacteria exist in complex microbial communities, not alone. There are few studies that examine the mechanisms behind multi-pathogen infections which renders a gap in our understanding of the subsequent implications on agriculture. In this dissertation, I use in vitro plate assays with RNA-sequencing and in planta assays to investigate the interactions between two cotton bacterial pathogens, Xanthomonas citri pv. malvaearum (Xcm) and Pseudomonas syringae (Ps). In vitro plate assays demonstrate that …

Just Food? Navigating Collective Visions For Food Justice In Grand Rapids, Mi, Jack Boitel
Masters Projects
This research delves into the multifaceted realm of food justice within Grand Rapids, MI, exploring collective vision-making processes and their intersection with social innovation and systemic change. Grounded in the concepts of "Freedom Dreams" by Robin D.G. Kelley, the study investigates how envisioning change goes beyond goal-setting, encompassing actions and conversations pivotal to transformative processes. The literature review establishes a strong foundation, emphasizing the historical roots of food justice, integration of abolitionist principles, and the imperative of decolonization within broader social justice frameworks. Central to the inquiry is the role of the Michigan Good Food Charter in leading food systems …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Empirical evidence indicates that collaborative interprofessional practice leads to positive health outcomes. Further, there is an abundance of evidence examining student and/or faculty perceptions of learning or satisfaction about the interprofessional education (IPE) learning experience. However, there is a dearth of research linking IPE interventions to patient outcomes. The objective of this scoping review was to describe and summarize the evidence linking IPE interventions to the delivery of effective patient care. A three-step search strategy was utilized for this review with articles that met the following criteria: publications dated 2015–2020 using qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods; the inclusion of healthcare …

The Impact Of Climate Changes On The Surface Water Environment In Muthanna Governorate And Its Development Implications, Haider Khairy Ghadia Al-Budairi
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The impact of climate change is one of the most important causes of water scarcity and drought that Iraq suffers from in general, especially the central and southern regions, which are the most affected, including Al-Muthanna Governorate. The amounts of precipitation led to a decrease in the discharges of the Euphrates River in the study area from (449) m3/sec in 1978 to (111.2) m3/sec in 2022, noting that the rain contributes to feeding the Iraqi rivers by (42-49%) of the total sources. other nutrition, there is no doubt that this huge decrease in the amount of expenditures affected the various …

Strategies To Enhance Effectiveness Of School Boards In Governance, Brian Gersich
Doctorate in Education
School boards and superintendents play an important role, providing oversight of the educational services for students in a community. This study sought to understand how public school boards govern a district with their respective superintendents, including if and how this may be evolving. Through this research, I wanted to contribute to the discussion around effective school district governance and management with modernized challenges including an increased focus on social and community cultural issues and the post-pandemic era.
This qualitative study involved interviews with ten school board members currently serving in districts from the Southwest Twin Cities area. Findings indicate the …

Background; Food insecurity is a risk factor for multiple chronic diseases, including obesity. Importantly, both food insecurity and obesity are more prevalent in African American women than in other groups. Furthermore, food insecurity is considered a cyclic phenomenon, with episodes of food adequacy (ie, enough food to eat) and food shortage (ie, not enough food to eat). More research is needed to better understand why food insecurity is linked to obesity, including acknowledging the episodic nature of food insecurity as a stressor and identifying underlying mechanisms. Objective; The objective of this study is to investigate the episodic nature of food …

Al-Esraa University College Journal for Medical Sciences
This study aims to investigate the impact of sweet taste perception (sweet taste threshold and preference) on dental caries experience in relation to age and gender among a sample of schoolchildren. The research follows a cross-sectional observational design and includes 181 schoolchildren of both genders aged between 6 and 12 years from the Al-Risafa district of Baghdad city. The participants were divided into two age groups (6-8 and 9-12). Dental caries were assessed using the decayed, missing, and filled indices for primary and permanent teeth (dmfs, dmft, DMFS, and DMFT). Additionally, the sweet taste threshold and sweet taste preference were …

Al-Esraa University College Journal for Medical Sciences
Everywhere in the globe, kidney illness is becoming more common, and there is no medication that can stop the progression of chronic kidney disease to end-stage renal disease, which is extremely expensive. Diabetes, kidney stones, accidents, and bleeding are the main contributors to kidney disease. The study was designed as a case control study. The study was involved (80) participants, only (36) were involved in this study and divided into two groups patients with nephropathy (23) and diabetic nephropathy (13) with age (20-65years) and BMI (19 -29 kg/m2). All these patients were diagnosed by nephrologist conducted in nephrology Clinic at …

Storage Protein Activator Controls Grain Protein Accumulation In Bread Wheat In A Nitrogen Dependent Manner, Anne Plessis, Catherine Ravel, Thierry Risacher, Nathalie Duchateau, Mireille Dardevet, Marielle Merlino, François Torney, Pierre Martre
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The expression of cereal grain storage protein (GSP) genes is controlled by a complex network of transcription factors (TFs). Storage protein activator (SPA) is a major TF acting in this network but its specific function in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) remains to be determined. Here we generated an RNAi line in which expression of the three SPA homoeologs was reduced. In this line and its null segregant we analyzed GSP accumulation and expression of GSP and regulatory TF genes under two regimes of nitrogen availability. We show that down regulation of SPA decreases grain protein concentration at maturity under low …

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a worldwide problem with iron deficiency being the most common cause. When anemia occurs in pregnancy, it increases the risk of adverse maternal, fetal, and postnatal outcomes. It induces preterm births and low birth weight (LBW) deliveries, long-term neurodevelopmental sequelae, and an increased risk of earlier onset of postnatal iron deficiency. Anemia rates are among the highest in South Asia, and India's National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) for 2019-2021 indicated that over half of pregnant women, and more than 65% of children, in the country are classified as anemic (Sciences IIfP, National Family Health Survey-5, 2019-21, India …
