Diversity within the United States continues to increase, making it imperative that health care providers understand the impact of cultural background on health behaviors and perceptions. These practices promote trusting patient-provider relationships, improve outcomes, and increase patient satisfaction. In this article, we discuss the 3 largest ethnic or racial minority groups in the United States, Hispanics, African Americans, and Asians, and the intersection of culture and health care through the lens of these distinct communities. We also offer behavioral recommendations to increase awareness and knowledge regarding vast cultural variations within our communities while embracing cultural humility.

Background and objectives: This study aims to identify patterns of caregiving intensity and assess associations between caregiving intensity and multidimensional physical health indicators and health behaviors among spousal caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia.
Research design and methods: Using data from 152 spousal caregivers aged 65 and older, the intensity of their caregiving experience was measured as the number and frequency of health- and medical-related helping activities for their care recipient. Multidimensional health indicators included self-reported fatigue, sleep disturbance, physical functioning, pain interference, general health, and the number of chronic conditions from the electronic health records. Self-reported …

Effects Of Blood Flow Restriction Resistance Training On Autonomic And Endothelial Function In Persons With Parkinson's Disease, Annie Bane, Lorraine Wilson, Jill Jumper, Lindsay Spindler, Pricilla Wyatt, Darryn Willoughby
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Background: Autonomic dysfunction precedes endothelial dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) and causes blood pressure and circulation abnormalities that are highly disruptive to one's quality of life. While exercise interventions have proven helpful for motor symptoms of PD, improving associated non-motor symptoms is limited. Low-intensity resistance training with blood flow restriction (LIRT-BFR) improves autonomic dysfunction in non-PD patients and high-intensity resistance training (HIRT) is recommended for motor symptom improvements for people with PD (PwPD).
Objective: To determine the effects of LIRT-BFR and HIRT on homocysteine and autonomic and endothelial function in PwPD and to determine the hemodynamic loads during LIRT-BFR and …
Liver Directed Adeno-Associated Viral Vectors To Treat Metabolic Disease, Marcel A Chuecos, William R Lagor
Liver Directed Adeno-Associated Viral Vectors To Treat Metabolic Disease, Marcel A Chuecos, William R Lagor
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
The liver is the metabolic center of the body and an ideal target for gene therapy of inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs). Adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors can deliver transgenes to the liver with high efficiency and specificity and a favorable safety profile. Recombinant AAV vectors contain only the transgene cassette, and their payload is converted to non-integrating circular double-stranded DNA episomes, which can provide stable expression from months to years. Insights from cellular studies and preclinical animal models have provided valuable information about AAV capsid serotypes with a high liver tropism. These vectors have been applied successfully in the clinic, particularly …
Desert Or Mirage? An Examination Of Food Deserts In Iowa Cities, Andrew Creasey
Desert Or Mirage? An Examination Of Food Deserts In Iowa Cities, Andrew Creasey
Graduate Research Papers
Food insecurity affects millions of Americans and has been widely recognized as a significant health and economic issue. Because of this, researchers have sought to develop ways to identify areas that are prone to food insecurity, which have become known as food deserts. Food deserts have been broadly defined through a confluence of three factors: low income, a lack of vehicle access, and a predetermined distance from a healthy food retailer. But research into food deserts in Iowa is limited, and the most prominent source of information on this topic, the Food Access Research Atlas created by the U.S. Department …

Jurnal Civics: Media Kajian Kewarganegaraan
There are weaknesses both from the perspective and effectiveness of Citizenship Education (CE) which are too oriented towards domestic problems in the context of facing global challenges and problems. Today it is necessary to change the orientation of the Civics curriculum which is globally oriented. In other words, it is necessary to engineer the Civics curriculum development. This paper attempts to present theoretical frameworks for engineering the development of a democratic and globally oriented Civics curriculum. There are at least six theoretical frameworks, namely the Birdcage Theory, Crystal Theory, Tree Theory, DNA Theory, Mushroom Theory, and Amoeba Theory. The six …

The development of highly advanced technology has changed the pattern of people's lives in fulfilling information needs. All forms of information obtained will spread very quickly and even difficult to control. We cannot avoid that currently people from all walks of life are increasingly "lulled" by the sophistication of technology such as cellphones to smartphones which are of course equipped with various applications that make it easier for users. However, this convenience is not accompanied by control from various parties, causing a negative impact commonly called Cyberbullying. This paper describes how cyberbullying cases affect school-age children so that the participation …

In the education curriculum in Indonesia, physical education is a medium for developing the potential of student learning outcomes in a comprehensive (cognitive, affective, and psychomotor) and sustainable manner. However, at the same time, teachers have not maximized analytical thinking supplements in learning and mastering student movements to optimize their physical education learning outcomes. This research used quantitative methods to examine the effect of analytical thinking skills on student learning outcomes. The participants were 24 elementary school students (mean age = 10.17+0.38) who were determined using a purposive sampling technique. Data on thinking skills were collected using instruments and rubrics …

Physical literacy has four components, one of which is the physical component. Increasing the physical component requires learning strategies implemented through physical education, one of which is the traditional Lombok game, which is an effective learning process for children. This research aims to test the effectiveness of traditional Lombok games in increasing physical literacy in elementary school students. This study used the Quasi Experimental Design research method (pretest and posttest control group design) involving 66 class IV students. It consists of two groups, namely, the control group and the intervention group. The intervention group (n = 33; 50% boys and …

Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research
Plants have been used in traditional medicine in different parts of the world to treat several diseases. Many studies have confirmed their medicinal values, which have led to the isolation and characterization of various potential drug candidates. This study focuses on the antimicrobial activity of crude fractions of Gossypium barbadense leaves and the isolation of active compound. The pulverized plant leave was soaked in ethanol (98% v/v), and a solvent-based fractionation was carried out using n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. The obtained crude fractions were screened for antimicrobial activity against four (4) clinical isolates: Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas …
