Gerontovis: Data Visualization At The Confluence Of Aging, Zack While, R. Jordan Crouser, Ali Sarvghad
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Despite the explosive growth of the aging population worldwide, older adults have been largely overlooked by visualization research. This paper is a critical reflection on the underrepresentation of older adults in visualization research. We discuss why investigating visualization at the intersection of aging matters, why older adults may have been omitted from sample populations in visualization research, how aging may affect visualization use, and how this differs from traditional accessibility research. To encourage further discussion and novel scholarship in this area, we introduce GerontoVis, a term which encapsulates research and practice of data visualization design that primarily focuses on older …

Effects Of Decompressive Craniectomy Combined With Edaravone On Postoperative Neurological Functions And Hemodynamics Of Patients With Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Xinjing Yang
Neurosciences
Objectives: To assess the effects of decompressive craniectomy combined with edaravone on the postoperative neurological functions and hemodynamics of patients with severe traumatic brain injury (STBI). Methods: The subjects included totally 186 STBI patients admitted during January 2018 and January 2021. The random number table method was adopted to set an operation group (n=82) and a combined medication group (n=104) for the subjects. The changes of the clinical indicators were observed. Results: Compared with the operation group, the combined medication group had higher Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination score, Barthel index score, total response rate and heart rate ( p <0.05). Besides, by contrast to those of the operation group, the mean arterial pressure, myocardial zymogram indicators, postoperative neurological function indicators and total incidence rate of complications of the combined medication group were reduced ( p <0.05). In comparison with the operation group, the combined medication group exhibited raised ipsilateral contralateral blood velocities ( p <0.05). Furthermore, the combined medication group had a better postoperative 1-year prognosis than the operation group ( p <0.05). Conclusion: Edaravone in combination with decompressive craniectomy benefits the postoperative improvement of neurological functions of STBI patients, effectively stabilizes the hemodynamics, induces few complications and improves the prognosis.

Position statement: The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) provides an objective and critical review of the use of a ketogenic diet in healthy exercising adults, with a focus on exercise performance and body composition. However, this review does not address the use of exogenous ketone supplements. The following points summarize the position of the ISSN: 1. A ketogenic diet induces a state of nutritional ketosis, which is generally defined as serum ketone levels above 0.5 mM. While many factors can impact what amount of daily carbohydrate intake will result in these levels, a broad guideline is a daily dietary …

Protein supplementation often refers to increasing the intake of this particular macronutrient through dietary supplements in the form of powders, ready-to-drink shakes, and bars. The primary purpose of protein supplementation is to augment dietary protein intake, aiding individuals in meeting their protein requirements, especially when it may be challenging to do so through regular food (i.e. chicken, beef, fish, pork, etc.) sources alone. A large body of evidence shows that protein has an important role in exercising and sedentary individuals. A PubMed search of “protein and exercise performance” reveals thousands of publications. Despite the considerable volume of evidence, it is …

Evaluation Of The Impact Of Urban Stream Syndrome On Macroinvertebrate Functional Feeding Diversity And Organic Matter Processing In Streams, Helena Loucas
Longwood Senior Thesis Proposal
The relationship between macroinvertebrate functional diversity and environmental processes is connected in streams. Aquatic macroinvertebrates are specialized feeders, falling into five functional feeding groups which affect processes such as the decomposition of organic matter. Urbanization causes the degradation of streams in a process is known as the Urban Stream Syndrome, and can result in increased concentrations of contaminants, altered stream morphology, and reduced taxonomic richness. The reduction of taxonomic richness increases the abundance of tolerant species, altering functional feeding groups, which will affect ecosystem processes within the stream. My proposed study seeks to determine the effects of urbanization on ecosystem …

“Medicine and food homology” (MFH) on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a term originated from “Huang Di Nei Jing-Su Wen”, and its theory with a long history in China. Some TCMs as functional food, which have been used for “food therapy”, and “medicine”, either acting as food on an empty stomach or as medication for administering to the patient. These are also known as “functional foods” for curing diseases or modulating human body functions. TCM has not just one, but rather multiple principles or concepts for food, which are based on the nutrition of organs (“Yin and Yang” theory), warm …

Music, Mayhem, And A Mississippi: Still Burning-The Hope Of Smothering The Deleterious Effects Of Deliberate Indifference, Angela Dixon
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that the deliberate indifference standard, as applied in Eighth Amendment jurisprudence, fails to adequately address inhumane and unconstitutional prison conditions, particularly in Mississippi. It critiques the standard for prioritizing prison officials' intent over objective conditions, allowing systemic neglect and racial disparities to persist. The analysis advocates for a shift toward an objective standard to better protect human dignity and hold prison administrators accountable.

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare inborn error of metabolism that presents variably in both age of onset and severity. HPP is caused by pathogenic variants in the ALPL gene, resulting in low activity of tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP). Patients with HPP tend have a similar pattern of elevation of natural substrates that can be used to aid in diagnosis. No formal diagnostic guidelines currently exist for the diagnosis of this condition in children, adolescents, or adults. The International HPP Working Group is a comprised of a multidisciplinary team of experts from Europe and North America who have expertise in …

Vegetables are healthy foods with nutritional benefits; however, nearly one-third of the world's vegetables are lost each year, and some of the losses happen due to the imperfect shape of the vegetables. In this study, imperfect vegetables (i.e., broccoli and carrots) were upcycled into freeze-dried powders to improve their shelf-life before they were formed into food inks for 3D printing. The rheology of the food inks, color analysis of the uncooked and cooked designs, and texture analysis of the cooked designs were determined. The inks with 50% and 75% vegetables provided the best printability and shape fidelity. 3D printing at …

Genome-to-phenome research in agriculture aims to improve crops through in silico predictions. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) is potent in identifying genomic loci that underlie important traits. As a statistical method, increasing the sample quantity, data quality, or diversity of the GWAS dataset positively impacts GWAS power. For more precise breeding, concrete candidate genes with exact functional variants must be discovered. Many post-GWAS methods have been developed to narrow down the associated genomic regions and, ideally, to predict candidate genes and causative mutations (CMs). Historical natural selection and breeding-related artificial selection both act to change the frequencies of different alleles of …
The Role Of Primary Care Providers In Maintaining Weight Loss By Preventing Behavioral Relapse, Hayden R. Blanchard
The Role Of Primary Care Providers In Maintaining Weight Loss By Preventing Behavioral Relapse, Hayden R. Blanchard
Capstone Showcase
Supporting patients in optimizing health by treating obesity remains a relevant goal for primary care providers. While weight loss is frequently achieved with behavioral modification, maintaining weight loss by avoiding behavioral relapse is much more difficult. Patient may lose weight by reducing overall energy intake, incorporating intensive behavior change programs, utilizing pharmacotherapy as needed and, in certain cases, undergoing bariatric surgery. With a focus on behavior change and maintenance, primary care providers can support patients by planning more frequent follow up appointments, at least every one to three months. In these visits, PCPs can: focus on reenforcing lifestyle change principles …

Reintegration Of Street-Connected Children In Kenya: Evaluation Of Agape Children's Ministry's Family Strengthening Programme, Johanna K. P. Greeson, John Gyourko, Sarah Wasch, Christopher Page
Department of Social Work - Faculty Scholarship
In Kenya, the number of street-involved children continues to grow each decade, with most recent estimates as high as 250,000 to 300,000. Despite efforts by local government, nongovernmental organizations, and community-based organizations to address this problem, most children who receive services end up returning to the streets. Since 2021, Agape Children's Ministry has provided time-limited, crisis-oriented services to families recently reintegrated through its Family Strengthening Programme (FSP). We conducted an exploratory programme evaluation of Agape's FSP to ascertain whether it is achieving the intended outcomes. Thirty families (n = 30 children; n = 38 caregivers) were enrolled in the …
