Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Postpartum Depression And Suicide Prevention In Asian Women, Emily J. Tan

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Postpartum Depression (PPD) remains a substantial contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality. One in seven women experience PPD, especially among Asian Americans because of the stigma surrounding the discussion of mental health which is often overlooked and misdiagnosed. One significant repercusssion of untreated PPD is the risk for suicidal ideation, which is the second leading contributor of mortality during the postnatal stage (Carlson et al., 2024).

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) consists of relaxation exercises, stress-reduction techniques, pain management strategies and effective problem-solving strategies. CBT takes place in various settings, including mental health clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, and group therapy (National …

Advancing School Nursing Practice: A Novel Approach To Screening For Gastrointestinal Disorders In Children, Ashley Bunting, Isabella Cavlan

Nursing | Student Research Posters

California schools currently only screen for vision and hearing, leaving many other health concerns unaddressed. Among these, gastrointestinal (GI) health is particularly significant, as digestive disorders can lead to severe consequences, like malnutrition and stunted growth. By incorporating routine GI screenings, school nurses can promote the early detection of disease, allowing for timely intervention and improved health outcomes in children.

Based on existing literature, we have developed a novel pediatric GI screening tool for school nurses to use in routine screenings, presented below.

Whole Foods Diet On Cognitive Functions In Children From Low-Income Families With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Jasmine Le

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder that has become increasingly prevalent in adolescents worldwide. This disorder often impairs academic performance, emotional regulation, and ability to navigate daily tasks effectively. It usually persists from childhood to adulthood (Hemamy et al., 2021).

Although conventional treatments such as medication and therapies are used for symptom management, many low-income families do not have the resources or education to access medical help, which may lead them to seek alternative treatments. Emerging research suggests that modifying diet to incorporate whole foods, foods rich in essential nutrients and minutely processed foods, may play a major role …

The Effects Of Seaweed Farming On Local Ecosystems In The United States, Reid Cohen Jan 2024

The Effects Of Seaweed Farming On Local Ecosystems In The United States, Reid Cohen

Pitzer Senior Theses

In my thesis, I explore how seaweed farming contributes to the regeneration of marine ecosystems, supports biodiversity, and assists in harmful nutrient removal. Seaweed farming is a relatively unexplored industry in the United States with huge carbon capturing potential. Seaweed farming poses a significant opportunity for a project that has the potential to sequester carbon, increase biodiversity, protect coastal ecosystems, naturally clean water, provide biofuel capabilities, substitute as livestock fodder which then decreases methane emissions, along with many more benefits. Kelp supports biodiversity in marine ecosystems and provides essential habitats for various species. The seaweed farming industry holds profound potential …

Corporate Influence At Public Universities: Upholding The Conventional Agricultural Paradigm, Michaela Jones Jan 2024

Corporate Influence At Public Universities: Upholding The Conventional Agricultural Paradigm, Michaela Jones

Pitzer Senior Theses

The agriculture sector is responsible for feeding the planet but faces many growing threats as climate change worsens. Conventional agriculture practices, which are widespread, are both contributing to climate change and likely to become less feasible in future years. Regenerative agriculture provides a possible path forward but is not widely studied at public and land grant universities where much agricultural research takes place, in part because of significant corporate influence at these schools. Corporate influence can take many forms, and can include research funding by individual companies or industry groups, philanthropic giving in the form of buildings, research centers, and …

The Ecological Underpinnings Of Famine: Irish Agriculture And Land Use Under British Colonialism, 1534-1852, Wyatt Bandy-Page

Pitzer Senior Theses

Ireland’s Great Hunger (1845-52) cannot be reduced to merely potatoes and blight. This thesis approaches the Great Hunger in the context of agricultural and land use changes under British colonialism (1534-1852). Across seven centuries, successive waves of settlers seized the most productive lands, eventually giving rise to a series of plantation schemes designed to maximize the extraction of Irish human and natural capital. Land use transformations under colonial rule severely restricted Gaelic foodways and kept the Irish laboring classes at bare subsistence levels, while the produce of Irish plantations fueled English economic development. Following the onset of blight in 1845, …

Introduction Sitting on an unstable surface is a common paradigm to investigate trunk postural control among individuals with low back pain (LBP), by minimizing the influence lower extremities on balance control. Outcomes of many small studies are inconsistent (e.g., some find differences between groups while others do not), potentially due to confounding factors such as age, sex, body mass index [BMI], or clinical presentations. We conducted a systematic review with an individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis to investigate whether trunk postural control differs between those with and without LBP, and whether the difference between groups is impacted by vision and …
