Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) is a secondary metabolic product yielded upon the hydrolysis of gluconasturtiin and it is highly accumulated in the flowers of watercress. The aim of the current study was to assess the role of a naturally derived PEITC-enriched extract in the induction of oxidative stress and to evaluate its anti-melanoma potency through the regulation of its metabolism with the concurrent production of the N-acetyl cysteine conjugated by-product. For this purpose, an in vitro melanoma model was utilized consisting of human primary (A375) cells as well as metastatic (COLO-679) malignant melanoma cells together with non-tumorigenic immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT). …

Propionibacterium acnes is a bacteria which causes acne. This bacteria is hypothesized to be inhibited by Staphylococcus epidermidis. Prebiotics have been shown to enhance the number of S. epidermidis and decrease the growth of P. acnes. The prebiotic action of starch and pectin from diverse plant sources is known in the skin microbiome. The prebiotic activity of Ambon banana peel starch and pectin on skin microbiota has not been researched. This study aims to investigate the prebiotic activity of starch and pectin from Ambon banana peels on skin microbiota, represented by S.epidermidis and P.acnes. The results showed …

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic illnesses identified by elevated blood glucose levels. The glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) test is used to evaluate a person’s control of their blood glucose levels. According to a recent study, mHealth interventions may be particularly helpful for assisting patients with diabetes mellitus to self-monitor their status on their HbA1c level. Therefore, this systematic review aims to provide an overview of how mHealth affects individuals with diabetes mellitus, concentrating on HbA1c evaluation. A systematic review was conducted by reviewing the PubMed, Google Scholar, and Mendeley databases for randomized control trials published between February 2017 …

Skin ailments are a major burden in society. It is thought that Vitamins may help in improving skin health and appearance, but their deficiency may cause disease. The data regarding vitamin usage patterns in dermatologic practice in India is lacking. Therefore, the present study has been planned to analyze the prescribing pattern of vitamins. A cross-sectional, observational study was carried out at the outpatient department of dermatology at GCSMCH and RC, Ahmedabad, for 12 months from October 2019 to September 2020. Prescriptions of 500 patients were analyzed for common skin conditions and prescribing patterns. All the data were compiled into …

The COVID-19 pandemic led to supply chain disruptions causing a severe shortage of infant formula. The shortage impacted parents of infants with cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) who rely on specialized formulas. However, research on parent perspectives during formula shortages is limited. We aimed to understand the factors guiding parents’ decisions when transitioning to alternative amino acid formula (AAF) or extensively hydrolyzed formula (eHF) during the national formula shortage. We conducted a survey using the ZSMoments platform and found that before the shortage, parents valued safety (83%), tolerability (78%), and reputability (78%) as primary factors in selecting eHFs and AAFs. …

Food production and consumption are emblematic of challenges to operate within planetary boundaries, whilst providing minimum access for all. They draw on natural and human resources and are de facto drivers of land-use. Moreover, their recognition in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals has spurred growing awareness of food system fragility reflected in dietary orientation, waste streams and food security. Education is a key lever in transformation for food system resilience. Yet, food sustainability competencies and their signature pedagogies are in their infancy. This paper offers a reflection of their development at TU Dublin’s School of Food Science & Environmental …

Comparison Of Biomedical Science Students’ Perceptions Of Online Versus Paper-Based Examinations, Elizabeth Winters, Kris Jeremy, William G. Mitchell, Mmf Subhan
School of Biomedical Sciences
Introduction: Online examinations are becoming increasingly incorporated into higher education. However, Biomedical Science students’ perspectives on exam format preferences remains unexplored. This study aims to investigate exam format preferences and attitudes of these students. Methods: A self-reported survey of 31 questions on online exam perceptions was utilized and composed of six dimensions: affective factors, validity, practicality, reliability, security, and pedagogy. Scores measured student attitudes around online exams. Additionally, categorical questions examined attitudes around open-book online exams (OBOEs), closed-book online exams (CBOEs), and paper-based exams (PBEs). Qualitative analysis was conducted via the use of open-ended questions and a focus group on five …

To address gaps in understanding the pathophysiology of Gulf War Illness (GWI), the VA Million Veteran Program (MVP) developed and implemented a survey to MVP enrollees who served in the U.S. military during the 1990–1991 Persian Gulf War (GW). Eligible Veterans were invited via mail to complete a survey assessing health conditions as well as GW-specific deployment characteristics and exposures. We evaluated the representativeness of this GW-era cohort relative to the broader population by comparing demographic, military, and health characteristics between respondents and non-respondents, as well as with all GW-era Veterans who have used Veterans Health Administration (VHA) services and …
Home-Based High-Intensity Interval Training For People With Parkinson's: Protocol For The Hiit-Home4parkinson's Randomized, Controlled Feasibility Study, Conrad Harpham, Hilary Gunn, Jonathan Marsden, Raul Bescos Garcia, Luke Connolly
Home-Based High-Intensity Interval Training For People With Parkinson's: Protocol For The Hiit-Home4parkinson's Randomized, Controlled Feasibility Study, Conrad Harpham, Hilary Gunn, Jonathan Marsden, Raul Bescos Garcia, Luke Connolly
School of Health Professions
Background: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is feasible and beneficial for some people with Parkinson's (PwP), although adherence to extended programs may be problematic. PwP face barriers to exercise such as lack of time, expense, and difficulty with travel logistics due to motor symptoms. HIIT based in the home setting if practical, could therefore be apposite for PwP by overcoming these barriers. However, until now, no home-based HIIT program for PwP has been developed. Cocreated by PwP, clinicians, and family members, the HIIT-Home4Parkinson's (HH4P) program is an innovative, 12-week home-based HIIT program for PwP. This protocol describes a feasibility study designed …

Unveiling The Cognitive Impact: An Exploratory Study On Food Insecurity And Value-Driven Attentional Capture, Nichole S. Hogoboom
Master's Theses
Food insecurities have been shown to lead to serious negative health outcomes such as increased risk for diabetes and obesity in adulthood, food-related mental health and behavioral issues, all of which can have a crossover effect in many areas of a person’s life. This experiment explores whether previous history of food insecurity is associated with how people allocate attention to pictures of food; whether they are prioritizing or ignoring food stimuli in their environment. We hypothesized that the severity of food insecurity experienced in childhood would correlate with attentional bias towards food images, and that how hungry or thirsty participants …
