Forage And Garden Crops In The James River Valley, R.C. Chilcott, R.S. Roe Jun 1898

Forage And Garden Crops In The James River Valley, R.C. Chilcott, R.S. Roe

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The experiments in the James River Valley during 1898 are a continuation of those conducted in 1896 and 1897, the results of which are recorded in Bulletins 52 and 59. As in former years, these experiments have been conducted in the Hunter-Salzer Farm at Mellette and the seeds have mostly been furnished by the John A. Salzer Seed Co., of Lacrosse, Wis. All of the larger permanent grass-plants that were established in 1896 and which have survived two winters and three summers have been preserved. The Alfalfa and Clovers have also been continued. The results obtained with Brome grass, Alfalfa, …

A Preliminary Report On Experiments With Forage Crops, T. L. Lyon Mar 1898

A Preliminary Report On Experiments With Forage Crops, T. L. Lyon

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A preliminary report on experiments with forage crops. Covers sorghum, cow pea, hairy vetch, Canada field pea, non-saccharine sorghums, soybean, and rye.

Summary

Permanent grass pastures may be successfully substituted by certain annual forage plants.

A quick-growing variety of sorghum affords pasture fully equal to native or cultivated grasses.

Sorghum has the advantage of affording more forage per acre, and in being green and succulent throughout the entire summer. Its disadvantage consists in the necessity of plowing land for each crop.

One acre of sorghum will furnish pasture for ten cows twelve days.

The most profitable time to pasture sorghum …

Forage And Garden Crops In The James River Valley, J.H. Shepard, E.C. Chilcott Mar 1898

Forage And Garden Crops In The James River Valley, J.H. Shepard, E.C. Chilcott

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The experiments in the James River Valley during 1897 are a continuation of the work of 1896, the results of which are recited in Bulletin 52. There was no material change in the methods or aims of the researches. All the leading experiments with forage plants were repeated in order to obtain that certainty and weight which comes from repetition. While the results of a single season may have a significant value, nevertheless, the results of a series of seasons raise the issue above the level of accident and place them on the plane of demonstrated fact. It must be …

S.A.C. Lookout, Volume 2, Number 7, January 1898, Geo. E. Smith

Daily Campus Archives

In 1896, the students of the Storrs Agricultural College established a student newspaper, The Lookout. Published every month, The Lookout had a small, unpaid staff who laid out the pages by hand using tiny metal slugs with embossed letters from a printer's California job case. By 1914, the paper had changed its name to The Connecticut Campus, reflecting the growth of the institution that had become the Connecticut Agricultural College in 1899 and the student newspaper increased its publication schedule to twice a month. The paper continued to grow along with the campus in Storrs, CT, and in 1953 the …

Bulletin No. 52 - The Chemical Composition Of Utah Soils (Cache And Sanpete Counties), John A. Widtsoe Jan 1898

Bulletin No. 52 - The Chemical Composition Of Utah Soils (Cache And Sanpete Counties), John A. Widtsoe

UAES Bulletins

The soils of the State [Utah], as found by the Mormon pioneers of 1847, were virgin in the fullest sense of the word. As far as man knows, only a few patches in Southern Utah had ever been cultivated. For untold centuries the atmospheric forces, unhindered by man's intervention, had been allowed to weather and make fit for agricultural purposes the rock fragments that, washed down into the valleys from the mountain ranges, constitute the soils of the State. For a long period, also, long before human tradition begins, there had not been enough water in the Utah valleys to …
