Stimulants, H. Earl Rath May 1931

Stimulants, H. Earl Rath

Science Bulletin

The state law requires the teaching of the effects of narcotics and stimulants. Most teachers would be glad to comply with the law if they were certain that they could present reliable information. The difficulty in the past has been that most of this information available was merely propaganda and not based on scientific fact. The tobacco companies have always been able to secure statements from people of prominence who were tobacco users to the effect that tobacco not only did them no harm but actually proved of value. Their statements were not based on scientific evidence, and many of …

Utilization Of Proteins By The Growing Chick, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

1. There is a marked difference in the nutritive value of the various protein-contributing concentrates when used to supplement a corn-wheat basal ration which has been made complete for known vitamin and mineral essentials. 2. There is a great difference in the biological value even of animal protein concentrates. 3. Soybean meal produced a better growth rate than any of the other plant concentrates used. Cottonseed meal proved to have a greater growth-promoting value than did linseed oil meal. 4. The supplementing values of protein concentrates, one to another, is not quite as evident as one would expect if the …

Influence Of Clipping On The Yield Of Forage In Certain Pastures At North Logan, Utah, Newel Washburn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

"Pasture is the natural food of all domesticated herbivore, especially the ruminant, and the only single feed upon which it can be maintained in health indefinitely."

Pastures rank next to the alfalfa hay crop in total production of forage far livestock in Utah. For approximately five months each year pastures turnish the cheapest supply of feed available for dairy production. Their improvement and utilization to the best advantage as a source of valuable feed in Utah has been overshadowed by the abundance of alfalfa hay with its rich supply of minerals and high quality protein. There is a potentiality of …

The Value Of Music In The Elementary Grades, Anna M. Fox May 1931

The Value Of Music In The Elementary Grades, Anna M. Fox

Bachelors’ Theses

Why do same people smile and look blank at the mention of the study of art? Why do they look at art teachers as though they were in a class by themselves, as though they must be a queer lot? There 'is nothing unusual, nothing aristocratic about art, because art is life itself. If it is not a live thing it has failed to be art. Think of' the works of art in music, painting, and sculpture that have lived on down through the ages, and will continue to live on and on. A great man once said, "That all …

Emmer (Speltz) For Dairy Cows, T.M. Olson Apr 1931

Emmer (Speltz) For Dairy Cows, T.M. Olson

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The term speltz is commonly used for both emmer and spelt by farmers and seedsmen in this country. However, according to the Agronomy Department of State College the crop grown in South Dakota and commonly called speltz is in reality emmer. Emmer was probably introduced into this country fourty or fifty years ago by German immigrants from southern Russia who settled in the Dakotas. It is still grown largely in the Northwest. Farmers with whom the author has talked have been enthusiastic in their praises of emmer as a feed for all classes of livestock. It yields about the same …

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Part II deals with the location, number, and distribution of health agencies in the state. Part III attempts to describe more intensively the more important health conditions in Brookings county as being typical of the eastern South Dakota situation, together with suggestions for correcting certain rural health inequalities.
