The Influence Of Feed And Sunshine On The Vitamin D Content Of Cow’S Milk, Ben L. Robinson
The Influence Of Feed And Sunshine On The Vitamin D Content Of Cow’S Milk, Ben L. Robinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For the past several years there has been a growing tendency among dairymen, particularity those located near the large cities, to keep their cows in the barn much of the time. Under such a system of management the cows receive but little direct sunshine. In some localities it is also possible to find many cows which are fed the year around on dry feed receiving very little, if any, green food, either as soiling crops or as pasture. From many standpoints such practices are, of course, necessary and desirable, but from the standpoint of the nutritional value of the milk …

The Libriform Fibers In The Roots And Crown Of Medicago And Melilotus, J. N. Martin, Austin O. Simonds
The Libriform Fibers In The Roots And Crown Of Medicago And Melilotus, J. N. Martin, Austin O. Simonds
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The libriform fibers, long known to be especially prominent in many of the Leguminsoae, particularly the papilionaceae, constitute a large part of the xylem and are present in the phloem of the roots and crowns of the alfalfas and sweet clovers. They deserve mentioning in these legumes because the modifications they undergo at different periods in the plant's growth cycle indicate that they function as storage structures, and have an importance relative to the nutrition of the plant.
Contraction Of The Roots And Crowns Medicago And Melilotus, Austin O. Simonds, J. N. Martin
Contraction Of The Roots And Crowns Medicago And Melilotus, Austin O. Simonds, J. N. Martin
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The longitudinal contraction, a natural phenomenon of many plants, which results in lowering the basal portion of the plant deeper in the soil, is apparently accomplished in various ways. In both alfalfa and sweet clover the crowns are pulled vertically downward two to four inches during the first season. This is accomplished chiefly by the contraction vertically and the expansion radially and tangentially of parenchymatous cells that are continuously being formed in isolated groups scattered among the vascular elements. The development and expansion of these intercalated masses of parenchyma separate the vascular elements into tortuous strands, the tortuosity of which …
Studies On Regeneration Of Hemoglobin, H. L. Keil, Victor E. Nelson
Studies On Regeneration Of Hemoglobin, H. L. Keil, Victor E. Nelson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Many investigators in the past few years have been interested in the problem of the relation of iron to anemia. This problem originated in connection with studies involving a comparison of inorganic versus organic iron, which later led to studies on the relation of solubility of iron compounds to regeneration of hemoglobin and the treatment of anemia.
The Carboaryloxy Radical In The Migration Of Acyl From Nitrogen To Oxygen In Ortho Aminophenol Derivatives, L. Chas Raiford, G. O. Inman
The Carboaryloxy Radical In The Migration Of Acyl From Nitrogen To Oxygen In Ortho Aminophenol Derivatives, L. Chas Raiford, G. O. Inman
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
It has been shown, in general, that only one acetyl-benzoyl derivative of ortho aminophenols can be prepared, regardless of the order in which the acyl groups are introduced, and that in this product the benzoyl radical is always found attached to nitrogen. In the recent study of mixed diocyl derivatives of ortho aminophenols in which one of the radicals was the carboaryloxy group, attempts to determine the structure by means of hydrolysis with alkali caused the formation of a carbonylaminophenol.
The Role Of Liver In Growth, Reproduction And Lactation, H. Gregg Smith, Walter H. Seegers
The Role Of Liver In Growth, Reproduction And Lactation, H. Gregg Smith, Walter H. Seegers
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Alcohol-extracted beef liver was fed to albino rats as the only source of protein in a ration adequate in the recognized factors necessary for normal nutrition, the vitamins being supplied by yeast, cod liver oil and hydrogenated cottonseed oil (Crisco) ; the latter furnished the fat of the basal diet. The ration was found to be inadequate for optimum growth, reproduction and lactation. Supplementing the basal diet with 0.5 g. of raw liver or replacing the extracted-liver of the basal diet with whole dried liver greatly increased the growth rate and improved lactation.
Autobiography Of Proteins In Nutrients, Marguerite Jones
Autobiography Of Proteins In Nutrients, Marguerite Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in 1933, surveys the chemical classification of proteins and their role in human nutrition, with the stated aim of preparing home economics students to understand protein's function in the diet. Jones organizes proteins into three major classes: simple proteins, including albumins, globulins, glutelins, protamins, and histones; conjugated proteins, including nucleo-proteins, glyco-proteins, phospho-proteins, and hemoglobins; and derived proteins, including albumoses, peptones, and peptids, describing the chemical composition, solubility properties, and sources of each.
The thesis then examines amino acids as the end products of protein digestion, identifying those essential for growth and maintenance, including tryptophane, …
