Is There A Need For Social Workers In Intercollegiate Athletics? A Conceptual Study, Raymond Waller, Christina L. L. Martin, Samantha Morgan
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Research regarding eating disorders among intercollegiate female athletes is well-documented. Since eating disorders have been categorized as potentially serious mental illnesses by the American Psychiatric Association (APA, 2013), professionals need to be knowledgeable and involved in the overall care of college athletes. However, those closest to the athlete such as athletic trainers and coaches often lack the knowledge to detect symptoms and/or ability to assist those afflicted with eating disorders. To make a difference, a health care professional, such as a clinically trained social worker, should be considered to assist with the well-being of athletes. This conceptual study explores the …

Two questions on the mind of many parents of children with complex congenital heart disease (CHD) are: Will my child survive? And, how will their life be affected? As diagnostic procedures, along with medical and surgical treatments, for these infants have improved over the recent decades, more and more of these children are surviving into adolescence and adulthood. Despite these advances in care, children with complex CHD are at higher risk of neurodevelopmental disability (NDD) and decreased quality of life (QOL) compared to their peers without CHD.1,2

Malnutrition Alters Protein Expression Of Kndy Neuropeptides In The Arcuate Nucleus Of Mature Ewes, Jennifer F. Thorson, Ligia D. Prezotto
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The neuropeptides kisspeptin, neurokinin B, and dynorphin A are imperative for the pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone and luteinizing hormone to ultimately regulate reproductive cyclicity. A population of neurons co-expressing these neuropeptides, KNDy neurons, within the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARC) are positioned to integrate energy status from afferent neuronal and glial cells. We hypothesized that KNDyexpressing neurons in the ARC of mature ewes are influenced by energy balance. To test this hypothesis, ovary-intact, mature ewes were fed to lose, maintain, or gain body weight and hypothalamic tissue harvested during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle. Fluorescent, multiplex …

Background: Head and neck osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the midface requiring free flap (FF) reconstruction is uncommon. This multi-institutional study was designed to review outcomes for this rare patient population. Methods: Retrospective multi-institutional review of FF reconstruction for midface ORN (2005–2022; n = 54). Results: The FF survival rate was 87% (n = 54). Patients were less likely to be tolerating a regular diet at 3 months postoperative if they had a preoperative history of prior head and surgery (80% vs. 95%; p = 0.02), a pathologic fracture (50% vs. 90%; p = 0.04), exposed bone intraorally (43% vs. 94%; p …

Essays On The Determinants Of Women's And Children's Health In Bangladesh, Md Shahjahan
Essays On The Determinants Of Women's And Children's Health In Bangladesh, Md Shahjahan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation is titled "The Determinants of Women's and Children's Health in Bangladesh." The first chapter studies the impact of a Bangladeshi schooling program on child immunization rates. The program provided a stipend and other incentives to attend secondary school, significantly increasing rural girls' education. I hypothesize that this would lead to higher immunization rates in the next generation since better-educated mothers have better knowledge of health practices. The study uses a regression model ("difference-in-differences"), which is based on differential exposure to the 1994 Female Secondary School Stipend Program (FSSSP) by birth cohort and rural residence. I find that the …

BACKGROUND: Although the association between mental disorder and metabolic syndrome as a bidirectional relationship has been demonstrated, there is little knowledge of the cumulative and individual effect of these conditions on peripartum mental health. This study aims to investigate the association between metabolic syndrome conditions (MetS-C) and maternal mental illness in the perinatal period, while exploring time to incident mental disorder diagnosis in postpartum women.
METHODS: This observational study identified perinatal women continuously enrolled 1 year prior to and 1 year post-delivery using Optum's de-identified Clinformatics® Data Mart Database (CDM) from 2014 to 2019 with MetS-C i.e. obesity, diabetes, high …

The Qualitative Report
Data collection is one of the initial steps in almost all research practices. This study describes the challenges and issues faced by a researcher, in a developing country like Pakistan, during the execution of time-use research on nurses and paramedics, working in public sector hospitals of District Bahawalpur. We collected the data from the year 2018 to 2021, in three phases from 364 participants. Obstacles faced included: non-cooperative behavior of health department officials, non-response, reluctance, disinformation and misinterpretation on behalf of participants during working hours or after working hours and limited resources regarding funds and time. This paper also highlights …

Pediatric Obesity In The United States: Age–Period–Cohort Analysis, Ashley W. Kranjac, Dinko Kranjac, Roxanne I. Aguilera
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
The rates of obesity among American children aged 2–5 years has reached a historic high. It is crucial to identify the putative sources of population-level increases in obesity prevalence among preschool-aged children because early childhood is a critical window for obesity prevention and thus reduction of future incidence. We used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data and hierarchical age–period–cohort analysis to examine lifecycle (i.e., age), historical (i.e., period), and generational (i.e., cohort) distribution of age- and sex-specific body mass index z-scores (zBMI) among 2–5-year-olds in the U.S. from 1999 to 2018. Our current findings indicate that period effects, …

Athlete Activism Through A Bioecological Lens: An Asset-Based Approach To Exploring Athletes’ Moral Development, Daniel Springer, Molly Harry, Wayne L. Black, Jonathan E. Howe
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Since the onset of the global pandemic, there has been a sharp rise in Division I college athletes using their platforms to address inequity in college athletics. While it is unclear what factors are shaping this trend, understanding why college athletes engage in activism is imperative to better support them as they lean further into this practice. Accordingly, this manuscript seeks to outline a framework for examining activism in and through college sport over time, space, and context by utilizing Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological Process-Person-Context-Time Model. Examining athlete activism provides a mechanism to consider the way power, privilege, and oppression impact athletes’ …

International Commitment To Regulating Corporate Abuse In Food Systems: A Human Rights Framework Approach, Isabelle Hale
International Commitment To Regulating Corporate Abuse In Food Systems: A Human Rights Framework Approach, Isabelle Hale
Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law
Human access to adequate food is a pressing global challenge marked with significant disparities and systemic barriers. Despite advances in agricultural technology, production, and efforts by private organizations and governments to mitigate food access issues and recognize a legal right to food, millions worldwide continue to lack access. Poverty, political conflict, climate change, and inequitable social structures are just a few of the many complex barriers affecting food systems. However, one particular class of actors dominates the food system and exacerbates access issues: multinational and transnational corporations. By definition, corporations prioritize profit and market control. Mere recognition of the right …

Physiological And Biochemical Responses Of Maize (Zea Mays L.) Cultivars Under Salinity Stress, Nosheen Iftikhar, Shagufta Perveen, Baber Ali, Muhammad Hamzah Saleem, Mohammad Khalid Al-Sadoon
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Salt stress is a serious threatening factor for cereal crops such as maize (Zea mays L.) by affecting their growth and development. In the current era, the requirement for staple crops is increasing, so it is important to screen out salt-tolerant genotypes. For this purpose, a pot experiment was designed within three replications on ten different genotypes of the maize. The plants were planted in plastic pots and salt stress (0, 40, 70, 100 mM) was maintained. The salt stress induced a noticeable reduction in plant growth traits (shoot length, root length, shoot, root fresh and dry weight, and leaf …
