Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Our recent study revealed that the expression of lipoxygenase (LOX) and cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes in the hypothalamus is activated by nesfatin-1, leading to the liberation of leukotrienes and prostaglandins (PG), respectively. Moreover, our prior report explained that intracerebroventricular (ICV) nesfatin-1 treatment triggers cardiovascular responses mediated by central LOX and COX enzymes. Building upon our prior reports, the present investigation sought to clarify the role of cardiovascularly active central COX products, such as thromboxane (TX) A2, PGF2α, PGE, and PGD, in orchestrating nesfatin-1-evoked reactions in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR).Materials and methods: The Sprague Dawley rats, which …

Volumetric data provide unprecedented structural insight to the reproductive tract and add vital anatomical context to the relationships between organs. The morphology of the female reproductive tract in non-avian reptiles varies between species, corresponding to a broad range of reproductive modes and providing valuable insight to comparative investigations of reproductive anatomy. However, reproductive studies in reptilian models, such as the brown anole studied here, have historically relied on histological methods to understand the anatomy. While these methods are highly effective for characterizing the cell types present in each organ, histological methods lose the 3D relationships between images and leave the …

Beauty standards are often influenced by social values and cultural norms. What is considered to be beautiful has evolved over time and varies across cultures. These standards play a significant role in individuals' perceptions and behaviors about beauty. In addition, society places strong pressure on women to follow unrealistic beauty ideals. In today’s society, being slim is the ideal that women should follow. On the other hand, obese women are subjected to frequent judgments based on their weight and appearance. The constant exposure to social judgments and negative comments about their bodies can lead them to have body dissatisfaction, low …

Proper alignment of activity-rest and light-dark patterns allows for healthy bodily functions to occur at optimal times of the day. Disruptions to this alignment may cause poor sleep as well as physical, mental, and cognitive problems. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine if poorer circadian alignment was associated with decreased cognitive functioning among older (> 60 years) participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We utilized actigraphy-based rest-activity and dark-light measurements to calculate phasor magnitude (strength of circadian alignment coupling) and phasor angle (phase difference between activity-rest and light-dark cycles). Multiple linear regression models were …

The RE1 silencing transcription factor (REST) is a driver of sonic hedgehog (SHH) medulloblastoma genesis. Our previous studies showed that REST enhances cell proliferation, metastasis and vascular growth and blocks neuronal differentiation to drive progression of SHH medulloblastoma tumors. Here, we demonstrate that REST promotes autophagy, a pathway that is found to be significantly enriched in human medulloblastoma tumors relative to normal cerebella. In SHH medulloblastoma tumor xenografts, REST elevation is strongly correlated with increased expression of the hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF1α)-a positive regulator of autophagy, and with reduced expression of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor protein - a …

Aim: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. However, while 150+ animal models of AD exist, drug translation from preclinical models to humans for treatment usually fails. One factor contributing to low translation is likely the absence of neurodegenerative models that also encompass the multi-morbidities of human aging. We previously demonstrated that, in comparison to the PigmEnTed (PET) guinea pig strain which models “typical” brain aging, the Hartley strain develops hallmarks of AD like aging humans. Hartleys also exhibit age-related impairments in cartilage and skeletal muscle. Impaired mitochondrial respiration is one driver of both cellular aging and …

Limited Nerve Regeneration Across Acellular Nerve Allografts (Anas) Coincides With Changes In Blood Vessel Morphology And The Development Of A Pro-Inflammatory Microenvironment, Jesús A Acevedo Cintrón, Daniel A Hunter, Lauren Schellhardt, Deng Pan, Susan E Mackinnon, Matthew D Wood

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The use of acellular nerve allografts (ANAs) to reconstruct long nerve gaps (>3 cm) is associated with limited axon regeneration. To understand why ANA length might limit regeneration, we focused on identifying differences in the regenerative and vascular microenvironment that develop within ANAs based on their length. A rat sciatic nerve gap model was repaired with either short (2 cm) or long (4 cm) ANAs, and histomorphometry was used to measure myelinated axon regeneration and blood vessel morphology at various timepoints (2-, 4- and 8-weeks). Both groups demonstrated robust axonal regeneration within the proximal graft region, which continued across …

Ethanolamine (EA) affects the colonization and pathogenicity of certain human bacterial pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract. However, EA can also affect the intracellular survival and replication of host cell invasive bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes (LMO) and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium). The EA utilization (eut) genes can be categorized as regulatory, enzymatic, or structural, and previous work in LMO showed that loss of genes encoding functions for the enzymatic breakdown of EA inhibited LMO intracellular replication. In this work, we sought to further characterize the role of EA utilization during LMO infection of host …
