Application Of N And P Fertilizers On Pasture Of Southern Italy: Effects On Forage Species, Production And Quality, D Ferri, G Convertini
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The effects of N and P fertilization on the productive and qualitative characteristics of improved pastures in inside Southern Italy areas were investigated. The trial was carried out in two sites characterized by different altitude above sea level and soil properties; also previous fertilization treatments and botanical composition characteristics are significantly different. The N fertilization reduced negative effects of climatic variations (typical of these areas) on botanical composition of “Bella” grassland at lower altitude. On the contrary a more stable botanical composition assured good yields and quality of forage at “Li Foy” field (higher a.s.l.) because more regular weather conditions …

Long-Term Effects Of Co2 Enrichment And Temperate Increase On Forage Quality In A Temperate Grass, J F. Soussana, J M. Besle, I Chabaux, P Loiseau, P C. De Faccio Carvalho
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Perennial ryegrass swards were grown during two years at two N fertilizer supplies in elevated (700 ppm) or ambient atmospheric CO2 concentration at outdoor temperature and at + 3°C in elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 and temperature increase had only minor impacts on the digestibility and on the fiber composition of the cut material. On average, the water soluble carbohydrate concentration of the leaf laminae was doubled in elevated CO2, whereas a 3°C temperature increase reduced this concentration by 25 %.

Co2 Enrichment And Temperature Effects On Productivity Of Field-Grown Phalaris And Subterranean Clover, J M. Lilley, T P. Bolger, R M. Gifford
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Pure and mixed swards of Phalaris aquatica and Trifolium subterraneum were exposed to cool (ambient) and warm (cool +3oC) temperatures, at both 380 and 690 ppm CO2 concentrations in field temperature gradient tunnels for 5 months. In general, clover and the mixture had similar forage productivity in each treatment, while phalaris was less productive. Elevated CO2 increased clover production 40% in the monoculture and the mixture. Higher temperatures reduced clover regrowth at ambient CO2 and reduced the response to elevated CO2 in the monoculture but not in the mixture. In contrast, phalaris regrowth in the monoculture was not increased by …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Long-term effects of elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) and elevated temperature on growth processes of bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) and rhizoma peanut (Arachis glabrata Benth.) were evaluated. Forages were established and grown in 27-m long temperature-gradient greenhouses constructed over a natural field soil. Treatments were two CO2 levels, 350 or 700 vpm CO2, and four temperature sectors (0, 1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 °C above ambient). Shoot emergence, ground cover, leaf and canopy assimilation, rate of leaf appearance, and dry matter accumulation were measured. Increasing temperature accelerated plant establishment and increased early plant dry matter accumulation, leaf area, and leaf appearance rate. …

Degradability And Fermentescibility According To Fiber Content In Low Quality Forages, A Dieng, A Buldgen, Ph Lecomte, K G. Toussaint
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The nylon bag technique and the gas-test method were compared with 6 different roughages representing a wide range of fiber contents in samples collected in the Senegalese Groundnut Basin. The results showed high correlation coefficients and low residual standard errors between the chemical composition of the roughages (mainly the acid detergent fiber fraction) and their degradability or fermentescibility. Reliable relationships between the two methods were also identified.

A Comparison Of Preservation Methods Of Roughages From Grassland In Poland, J Zastawny, B Paluch, H Jankowski-Huglejt
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this study was to determine whether the preservation method has an influence on the nutritive value of roughages obtained from grasslands. The silage made in clamps and in big cylindrical bales were compared. During chemical studies, dry matter, crude protein, crude fiber, crude ash, nitrogen free extracts and fat level were determined. The digestible energy of each feed was calculated. The content of particular acids (lactic, acetic and butyric) in the mass of silage was determined. The silages were tested by feeding to ruminants. The obtained results show that the quality of both silages was good. The …
Nutritive Value Of Guineagrass Cultivars In The Winter As Influenced By Nitrogen Fertilization, N.F G. Rethman, W.A J. Steenekamp
Nutritive Value Of Guineagrass Cultivars In The Winter As Influenced By Nitrogen Fertilization, N.F G. Rethman, W.A J. Steenekamp
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The monitoring of yield, structure and nutritive value of four Panicum maximum (Guineagrass) cultivars, utilized as standing hay in the winter, yielded valuable data on the relative importance of nitrogen fertilization and cultivar. While nitrogen had a strong influence on yield and crude protein content it was the differences between cultivars, with respect to soil adaptation and structure, which played a dominant role. It is recommended that future research place particular emphasis on the adaptation of cultivars and genotype differences in structure.

Black Locust Effects On Forage Yield And Nutritive Quality Produced On Reclaimed Mined Land, D C. Ditsch, M Collins, J H. Grove
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is a rapidly growing, leguminous tree species often used to stabilize disturbed sites. The objectives of this study were to measure the effect of black locust populations on understory forage production and livestock nutritive quality on reclaimed surface mined land. In two out of three years, forage dry matter yields harvested under a population of 1368 trees ha-1 were not different than the clear cut treatment (all trees removed). Forage dry matter production was significantly reduced at populations of 2736 and 4145 trees ha-1 due to slow and limited regrowth following harvest. Forage nutritive …

Rhizobial And Nutritional Responses Of Desmanthus Clay Soils Of Queensland, N J. Brandon, R A. Date, R M. Jones, R L. Clem, G A. Bahnisch, P R. Spies, A Becerra, B A. Robertson, T.W G. Graham
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of these studies was to determine the reasons for chlorosis of desmanthus observed at some sites in southeast Queensland. Inoculation with Rhizobium increased growth of desmanthus in 2 of 4 soils in the field and 4 of 8 soils in pots. Greatest responses occurred in soils with few or no effective native Rhizobium. Most soils however, contained native strains that were effective. Omission of sulphur significantly reduced dry weight of desmanthus grown in pots in 5 of 7 soils by 30-51% relative to plants supplied with all nutrients. Omission of P and Mo resulted in similar yield reductions …

Phosphorus Requirements In Legumes: Calibration Of A Rapid And Simple Tissue Test, A Moron
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this research was to adjust and calibrate a phosphorus (P) tissue test to diagnose in a simple and rapid manner the nutritional status of commonly used legumes in Uruguay. Field experiments conducted during 1993-94 with four legumes, showed a significant yield response to increasing P fertilizer rates. A colorimetric sap analysis was used to determine P status in legumes. A strong relationship was found between P sap analysis and relative yields. A critical level of 90-100 μg P/ml in sap to attain 90% of the maximum yield was obtained.

Evaluation Of Different Nitrogen Sources On The Production And Chemical Properties Of C4-Sub-Tropic Pastures, J F. Reckling, G.H J. Kruger
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Digitaria eriantha fertilised with limestone ammonium nitrate (LAN 28 % N), although not statistically significant, resulted in higher dry matter production in comparison to those plants fertilised with urea (U 46% N). Significant lower (P<0.05) soil calcium levels were found in plots fertilised with LAN. Plants fertilised with urea had double the amount of Aspartic and Glutamic acid, indicating that urea did not convert to NO3 -, but was taken up as ammonium.

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The effect of nitrogen and potash fertilizations on dry matter and protein yields and chemical composition of pangolagrass (D. decumbens Stent.) was studied in a randomized block design with four replications using a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Nitrogen and potash were applied after each cut as an equivalent to 3 and 2% of dry matter (65°C) yield, respectively. There were great increases in dry matter and protein yields when nitrogen alone or combined with potash was used. Potash fertilization alone had no effect on the variables described above. Nitrogen fertilization improved forage pangolagrass composition, being particularly effective on crude …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
With increased interest in sustainable agriculture, attention has focused on the role of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) in the productivity of agricultural systems. AM spores were taken from grassland and grass-arable systems with either a history of high-input, conventional, or low-input, organic management, and used as a source of inoculum in host plants (Allium amelioprasum, Trifolium repens and Lolium perenne). Spores from organic management systems produced a greater yield response than those from conventional systems. Where various spore inoculum produced differences in host growth responses, it was observed that the infected root of these host plants also produced similar …

Influence Of Drying Method And Temperature On Ruminal Degradable Protein Of Switchgrass, D E. Farnham, K J. Moore, J R. George
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The nutritional value of herbage protein fed to ruminant livestock can be influenced greatly by the extent to which it is degraded in the rumen. This study was conducted to determine if drying method and temperature alters measurements of in situ ruminal escape protein (EP) of switchgrass herbage. Switchgrass harvested at the pre-heading stage was either air dried, freeze dried, or oven dried at 38, 49, 60, or 710 C. Samples from each of the six drying treatments were digested in situ in Dacron bags for 4, 8, 12, or 16 h. Drying treatment had a significant impact on EP …

Submarine performance is not just measured in technical terms, but also in how crews operate over time. As the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) increasingly deploys its submarine force beyond the near seas on long-distance combat readiness and training missions, studying the force’s human components benefits a broader understanding its overall effectiveness. This report explores work and living conditions, crew endurance, service culture, political requirements, and approaches to resolving human issues in the submarine force. An inherently dangerous and challenging profession, the submarine force has gradually developed numerous solutions to address various challenges to prevent non-combat attrition among crews. Life …

Innovate And Create Novel Mycoinsecticide System To Promote Green Development Of Agriculture, Ding Ding, Feng Jiang, Lili Cao, Le Kang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The long-term irrational use of chemical pesticides has led to severe ecological, environmental, and human safety concerns, although chemical pesticides play an important role in increasing crop yields. In response, China has issued a series of policies to reduce the use of chemical pesticides, aiming to ensure food and agricultural safety while promoting high-quality agricultural development. Reducing the usage of chemical pesticides must be complemented by the adoption of biological pesticides. Globally, biological pesticides currently account for approximately 40% of total pesticide usage in many countries. Mycoinsecticide, characterized by their environmental friendliness, sustainability, and low resistance development, represents an important …

The Osteological Neutral Pose Of The Neck Of An Apatosaurine Sauropod Based On Virtual And Physical Models, Colin Don Boisvert
Theses and Dissertations
An array of sauropod taxa coexisted in Late Jurassic North America. How so many giant genera coexisted without competing for food is puzzling considering their potential metabolic requirements. One aspect of this question is neck posture, which has been much contested, both in terms of the intrinsic curvature of the neck and the resultant elevation of the head. Neck curvature is characterized by the Osteological Neutral Pose (ONP), wherein the intervertebral joints are in an undeflected state. This pose is crucial to understanding neck posture. The articulated series of presacral vertebrae 2-19 of an exceptionally well-preserved apatosaurine, BYU 18531, are …

Brace root architecture is a critical determinant of maize's stalk anchorage and nutrition uptake, influencing root lodging resistance, stress tolerance, and plant growth. To identify the key microRNAs (miRNAs) in control of maize brace root growth, we performed small RNA sequencing using brace root samples at emergence and growth stages. We focused on the genetic modulation of brace root development in maize through manipulation of miR390 and its downstream regulated (). In the present study, miR167, miR166, miR172, and miR390 were identified to be involved in maize brace root growth in inbred line B73. Utilizing short tandem target mimic (STTM) …

Peripheral neuropathy is a common and debilitating condition, impacting between 2-7% of the population, with prevalence increasing significantly after the age fifty. While the cause of peripheral neuropathy remains unknown in 25% to 46% of cases (idiopathic), this occurrence is more frequent in older individuals. Peripheral neuropathy encompasses a range of conditions resulting from damage to any part of the peripheral nervous system. Histopathological analysis of nerve biopsies is diagnostically important for certain peripheral neuropathy patients. Suspected peripheral neuropathy requires a comprehensive patient history and physical examination to establish a differential diagnosis.
