Influence Of Drying Method And Temperature Of Ruminal Degradable Protein Of Switchgrass, D E. Farnham, K J. Moore, J R. George
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The nutritional value of herbage protein fed to ruminant livestock can be influenced greatly by the extent to which it is degraded in the rumen. This study was conducted to determine if drying method and temperature alters measurements of in situ ruminal escape protein (EP) of switchgrass herbage. Switchgrass harvested at the pre-heading stage was either air dried, freeze dried, or oven dried at 38, 49, 60, or 71° C. Samples from each of the six drying treatments were digested in situ in Dacron bags for 4, 8, 12, or 16 h. Drying treatment had a significant impact on EP …

Ensilage For Low Resources Farmers 2. Poultry Litter As Cheap Additive, F.H K. Asiedu, C A. Alexander, G Proverbs
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The effect of poultry litter (15% wet basis) additive on the quality of king grass (Pennisetum purpureum x P. americanum) silage was studied in a randomized block design experiment (8 replications). Compared with grass silage (G), grass + poultry litter (G+P) caused significant (P<0.05) reduction in moisture (G, 716 v G+P, 670 g/ kgDM), pH (5.41 v 4.72) and butyric acid (9.6 v 5.5 g/kgDM). Crude protein (CP, Nx6.25, g/kgDM), in vitro digestibility (IVOMD, g/ kgDM) and metabolizable energy (ME, MJ/kgDM) increased from (G)104, 536 and 8.00 to (G+P) 127, 613 and 9.19. In a feeding trial using St. Elizabeth x Barbados Blackbelly lambs G+P gave significantly (P<0.05) higher daily gain (182 v 149 for G). This was related to significantly (P<0.05) higher intake of CP and ME from G+P (71.9 v 55.1 g/d and 5.20 v 4.24 MJ/d).

Additives As Preservatives For Wrapped Round Bales Silage Made Under Tropic Climate, J M. Paillat, G Mandret
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In tropical highlands it is difficult to conserve harvested forage as silage. Tests with molasses as an additive, or using ammonium tetraformiate (ATF) or inoculants have been conducted to find out more about the fermentation process in these conditions. Sugar additives are not the primary factor in the fermentation process. Nevertheless, they are essential to make up for the small amounts of water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) in the forages, but only if the dry matter (DM) content is high enough (27% for temperate species, 40 % for the kikuyu grass). Even at high rates such as 5 l t-1 of …

Intake, Digestion And Performance Comparisons For Cattle Fed Macerated Vs. Roller-Conditioned Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.) Forage, Suwarno, K M. Wittenberg, W P. Mccaughey
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this study was to determine whether maceration of alfalfa forage at the time of harvest will have a positive impact on intake, digestibility and performance in beef cattle. A performance trial conducted with 24 growing beef calves resulted in a 7% and 10% increase (P<0.05) in dry matter intake (kg/d) and daily gain (kg), respectively, when animals were fed alfalfa silage harvested with a macerator vs. a mower conditioner. Feed efficiency was not affected by treatment. Four steers assigned to alfalfa hay harvested with a macerator vs. mower conditioner showed no differences in dry matter intake, however, dry matter digestibility for the macerated hay was higher.

Evolution Of The Nutritional Quality During Big Bale Ensilage Of Temperate Multispecies Pastures, L M. Gutierrez, E M. Viviani Rossi
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this work was to assess the evolution of the nutritive quality of big bales composed of multispecifies pastures (Phalaris acuática, Festuca arundinacea, Lolium perenne and Medicago sativa). Ten big bales were analysed after 90 and 120 days for the following: dry matter (%DM); crude protein (CP, %DM); pH; neutral detergent fibre (NDF, %DM); digestibility in vitro of DM (IVDMD, %DM); ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N/%TN); soluble protein (SP, %NT) and non structural carbohydrates (WSC, %DM).The results were analyzed through variance of the means and significant differences (p<0.05) were found in percentages of DM (32.9% and 27.8%); CP (12.1% and 8.6%); pH (4.6 and 6.7); IVDMD (61.1% and 53.2%); N-NH3/TN (11.8% and 36.0%); SP (8.6% and 12.6%) and no differences were found in NDF (60.2% and 61.6%) and WSC (2.8% and 1.9%) (p>0.05).
Medicinal Plants As Indicators Of Grassland Biodiversity, G Nagy, I Vinczeffy, K Peto
Medicinal Plants As Indicators Of Grassland Biodiversity, G Nagy, I Vinczeffy, K Peto
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A study has been made to identify the medicinal plants on the existing Hungarian grasslands. Sixty-three plants have been found to possess medicinal effects. Twenty-six, 15 and 22 species are for internal, internal or external and external use, respectively. This result reflects the low management intensity of grasslands in the country, as well as the species richness of semi-natural grasslands. It is suggested that the number of medical plants on the grassland, - in general - can also be used as an indicator of grassland biodiversity.

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The Peoples Republic of China is the center of origin of several species of the section Platycarpae, which could contain genes for drought and cold tolerance that would be of significant benefit to cultivated alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) Of particular interest are Medicago archiducis-nicolai Sirjaev, M. edgeworthii Sirjaev, and M. ruthenica (L.) Ledebour. Of 105 M. ruthenica accessions collected from 15 diverse environments in Inner Mongolia, 50 were evaluated in the field at Beltsville MD (USA) in 1993 and 1994 on an acid soil (pH 6.4) deficient in boron and potassium. Significant variation was noted for stand retention, reaction to …
Assessing The Impact Of Dietary Addition Of Lignin On Growth Performance, Nitrogen Balance And Faecal Microorganisms In Grain-Fed Veal Calves, L E. Phillip, E S. Idziak
Assessing The Impact Of Dietary Addition Of Lignin On Growth Performance, Nitrogen Balance And Faecal Microorganisms In Grain-Fed Veal Calves, L E. Phillip, E S. Idziak
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A study was conducted with ALCELLR - lignin (A-lignin) to evaluate its impact on performance of grain- fed veal calves. Thirty two male calves (avg. initial wt, 190 kg) were fed for 13 weeks grain corn and a protein supplement with added A-lignin to supply 0, 1.25%, 2.5% or 5.0% of diet. Eight other calves were used to study nitrogen balance, and grab samples of faeces were analyzed for anaerobic, aerobic and coliform bacteria. A-lignin at 1.25% of diet increased (p<.01) weight gain by 12%. Addition of A-lignin also decreased (p< 0.01) organic matter digestion, increased (p<.01) faecal N excretion but did not significantly alter N balance. A-lignin reduced (p< 0.01) faecal ammonia concentration but increased (p <.01) DM content of grab samples of faeces; there were no significant effects on populations of faecal microorganisms. The study revealed a beneficial effect of A-lignin on calf growth but the reason for the response was not uncovered.
Seed Proteinase Inhibitors From Annual Medics Active Against Insect Pests, M Odoardi, A Tava, F Ceciliani
Seed Proteinase Inhibitors From Annual Medics Active Against Insect Pests, M Odoardi, A Tava, F Ceciliani
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Several different species of annual medics have been tested for the occurrence and concentration of trypsin inhibitors in the seed. Trypsin Inhibitory Activity (TIA) has been in fact related to the level of resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Wide variation was found for TIA among species, with the highest values shown by the snail medic (Medicago scutellata). After a simple and rapid procedure of chromatographic purification, the Trypsin Inhibitor (TI) from snail medic has been tested towards the trypsin-like proteinases extracted from larvae of different phytophagous insects, showing high levels of Inhibitory Activity. The complete amino acid …

The Effect On Intake Palatability And Digestibility Of Phenolic Compounds In Tagasaste (Chamaecytisus Proliferus), N J. Edwards, J C. Mailey, D M. Mcneill, J B. Lowry, C S. Mcsweeney, D A. Henry, C M. Oldham
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The major secondary metabolites currently identified in tagasaste (Chamaecytisus proliferus) belong to the phenolic group of compounds. The principal phenolic compounds are the flavones, apigenin and luteolin, but low concentrations of condensed tannins, the isoflavonoid daidzein and the alkaloid sparteine have also been detected in some samples. No flavonols have been detected. There is a strong relationship between the concentration of phenolic compounds in tagasaste and its palatability. Furthermore, digestibility of tagasaste is relatively high throughout the year, thereby implicating intake as the major factor influencing the seasonality of liveweight performance of livestock grazing tagasaste. Despite confirmation of …

Feeding Strategies To Optimize Reproductive Performance Of Cattle Grazing High Protein Pastures In Uruguay, H R. Tosi, K M. Wittenberg
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Alternative feeding strategies were investigated for Holstein heifers grazing a vegetative red, Trifolium pratense L., and white clover, Trifolium repens L., pasture. A total of 474 grazing heifers were supplemented varying amounts of corn silage, Zea mays, during the breeding season in an effort to improve reproductive performance. Animal response to supplementation, whether on spring or winter pasture, was similar. Corn silage supplemented at 18.8 or 28.8% DM basis of total diet, for winter and spring pastures, respectively, resulted in animal weight gains similar to that of heifers receiving legume pasture only. Serum urea nitrogen and reproductive performance for heifers …
Strategies For Improving Efficiency Of Beef Cattle In Tall Fescue Pasture Systems, J C. Waller, H A. Fribourg
Strategies For Improving Efficiency Of Beef Cattle In Tall Fescue Pasture Systems, J C. Waller, H A. Fribourg
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A beef (Bos taurusL.) cattle producer must allocate land and forage resources to meet nutrient needs of the entire herd. Using 20 yr of calving and grazing data, templates of herd composition, associated Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) requirements over the whole year, and forage TDN production were developed for a typical herd and land area. The monthly energy needed by the entire herd was relatively constant. Forage productivity varied monthly, indicating the need to plan for efficiently using surplus TDN from some seasons to meet needs at other times. This approach could be expanded to include more definitive …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The effects of cutting height and harvesting times on the forage yield, yield components and quality of Tangoio hybrid willow and Kinuyanagi willow were examined, to evaluate these willows as drought fodder for sheep. Tangoio (3.8 tDM/ha) outyielded Kinuyanagi (3 tDM/ha) in edible forage production and provided reasonable quality fodder (nitrogen content of 2.0 % and digestibility of 65 -69 %). The high edible forage yield of the willows relative to pasture (0.8 tDM/ha) during January and April showed that they provided potentially valuable supplements to pasture production. The willows, especially Tangoio, are recommended for use as maintenance fodder for …

Brachiaria Brizantha Response To Phosphorus Rates In The Nutrient Solution, F A. Monteiro, R A. Martim, W T. Mattos
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Seven phosphorus rates in the nutrient solution were studied in a greenhouse experiment for Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst) Stapf. Plants had 54 days of growth and 49 days of regrowth. Significant responses in forage yield, tiller number and root dry weight were found. Plant tops were divided into four parts and phosphorus concentration in each one significantly changed with phosphorus rates. Sampling of the young leaf blades and analyzing for phosphorus is proposed for diagnostic purposes. A critical phosphorus concentration of 1.2 g kg-1 is suggested as the critical level in the young leaf blades.

Bahiagrass Forage Production And Quality As Effected By Municipal Biosolids, R M. Muchovej, J E. Rechcigl
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Production of biosolids has been increasing consistently in the last few years. Land application of wastes is being regarded as an alternative means of disposal and as a source of inexpensive fertilizer material. Pastures are particularly attractive in this regard since the areas occupied are extensive and large amounts of fertilizer are required for adequate production. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of various rates of biosolids on bahiagrass yield and quality. Forage samples were collected from each plot from April to December. Significant increases in dry matter production, crude protein content and in vitro digestibility …

Effects Of Different Phosphate Fertilizers On Pasture Nutrition And Soil Phosphorus In Canterbury, New Zealand, L M. Condron, K M. Goh
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A field trial was conducted over 6 years to assess the relative performance of three phosphate (P) fertilisers of differing solubility (single superphosphate, ‘longlife’ superphosphate, ‘reactive’ phosphate rock) on a permanent pasture at Methven in Canterbury, New Zealand. Plant P uptake data showed that while the overall relative effectiveness of the fertilisers was closely related to their water-soluble P content (single superphosphate > ‘longlife’ superphosphate > ‘reactive’ phosphate rock), the agronomic efficiency of the sparingly soluble phosphate rock fertiliser improved markedly with time. Soil P analysis demonstrated that significant dissolution of phosphate rock had occurred in the soil, and the findings of …

Field Evaluation Of Soil Acidity Acidity Effects On The Growth Of Annual And Perennial Ryegrasses, N Miles
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Soil acidity limits pasture establishment and productivity in the moister eastern half of South Africa. Sound lime requirement guidelines based on soil test data are required. In the study reported here, lime responses of annual (Lolium multiflorum) and perennial (Lolium perenne) ryegrasses were evaluated in irrigated field trials located on acidic, highly weathered soils. Annual ryegrass (yield response to lime 27 to 32%) was found to be markedly more tolerant of soil acidity than perennial ryegrass (yield response 68%). Acid saturations of up to 20% had little impact on the yield of annual ryegrass, while yield …

Yield And Quality Of Sugarcane As Affected By Phosphate Applied Cation On Soils Of Various Phosphorus Levels, M A. Matin, K Oya, T Shinjo, T Horiguchi
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Effects of phosphate application on the growth, yield and quality of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) were studied on the soils having various phosphorus levels. Superphosphate was applied to bring the available soil P at 5, 15, 25 and 35 mg P2O5 100 g-1 designated as A, B, C and D levels, respectively. Leaf area index (LAI) and dry matter increased on the higher P plots over the lower P plots. The highest cane yield (74 t ha-1) and sugar yield (10.2 t ha- 1) were obtained from the B plot and the lowest cane yield (51 t ha-1) and sugar …

Evaluation Of Different Bradyrhizobium Sp Strains On Nitrogen Fixation Capacity In Four Forage Legumes, F O. Gallardo, E S. Lopes, M C. Diez
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Eleven available strains of Bradyrhizobium sp were used to test four forage legumes, Crotalaria juncea (Crotalaria), Cajanus cajans (Guandu), Styzolobium deeriagianum (Mucuna-Ana) and Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (Guar) for symbiotic N-fixation ability. Greenhouse experiments were conducted for nine weeks in order to evaluate shoot, root, and nodule dry weight, nodule number, and shoot nitrogen content. Four strains presented relative nitrogen efficiency (RNE) over 100% with Crotalaria cultivar, whereas only one strain was more efficient with Guandu and Mucuna cultivars. Strain 633 was the only one which presented a high yield with Crotalaria, Guandu and Mucuna-Ana cultivars.

N-P-S Fertilizer Effects On Herbage Yield And Brute Protein Contents In An Irrigated Perennial Pasture In South Patagonia, L San Martino, H M. Espina, E Cittadini
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Little research has been done to determine the effect of fertilization on irrigated pastures in Santa Cruz (South Patagonia). The objective of the present study was to estimate the effects of NPS fertilizing effects on forage yield and quality. The trial was set up in 1994 on a Borolic Haplargid soil characterized by low N content (0.00875% total N), low P availability (9 ppm Olsen) and medium alcalinity (pH 8.4). Pasture was dominated by tall fescue (95%) with 5% of alfalfa. A Complete Radom Design was used and N-P2O5-S nutrients were applied at rates of 120-100-50 kg.ha-1. Monthly mowing began …

Theses and Graduate Projects
In Alaska, 46 to 91 percent of American Indian and Alaska Native women have experienced physical intimate partner violence (IPV), compared to all women in other states, where the prevalence ranges from seven to 51 percent (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). Experiencing physical IPV has negative consequences on the mother’s physical and mental well-being, and has been associated with increased vulnerability to postpartum depression (PPD). Compared to other populations, American Indian and Alaska Native women are at greater risk for PPD due to less access to resources and less research on treatments (MacDorman, 2011). Additionally, American Indian and Alaska Native women …

A healthy lifestyle has been associated with decreased risk of developing breast cancer. Using untargeted metabolomics profiling, which provides unbiased information regarding lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise, we aim to identify the molecular mechanisms connecting lifestyle and breast cancer through network analysis. A total of 100 postmenopausal women, 50 with breast cancer and 50 cancer-free controls, were selected from the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project (LIBCSP). We measured untargeted plasma metabolomics using liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). Using the "enet" package, we retained highly correlated metabolites representing active molecular network (AMN) clusters for analysis. LASSO was used …
