Considering What Counts: The Fall And Rise Of Maternal Mortality Rates, Joel Best, Keith R. Johnson
Considering What Counts: The Fall And Rise Of Maternal Mortality Rates, Joel Best, Keith R. Johnson
Numeracy
Twentieth-century medical advances reduced the rate of maternal mortality by more than 99 percent. Yet recently we hear that there has been a substantial increase in the maternal mortality rate. This increase has been caused by contemporary researchers adopting much broader definitions for what counts as cases of maternal mortality. This example illustrations the importance of definitions in shaping statistics.

The 'Pendulum Paradigm' - Trends In Nitrogen Fertilizer Use On Temperate Grass/ Clover Pastures, R J. Eckard, F R. Mckenzie, P A. Lane
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Nitrogen fertiliser responses, on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) / white clover (Trifolium repens) dominant pastures, are compared between sub-tropical South Africa and temperate Australia. The data highlight the similarity in inflection point of the response curve, while emphasising the influence of high residual soil N at lower N application rates. The propensity of communities to oscillate between extremes in terms of N fertiliser use on intensive pasture, or the ‘Pendulum Paradigm’ is discussed. Particular reference is made to the dramatic increase in N fertiliser use in dairy pasture of temperate Australia and New Zealand. Emphasis is …

Amino acid metabolism plays a pivotal role in tumor microenvironment, influencing various aspects of cancer progression. The metabolic reprogramming of amino acids in tumor cells is intricately linked to protein synthesis, nucleotide synthesis, modulation of signaling pathways, regulation of tumor cell metabolism, maintenance of oxidative stress homeostasis, and epigenetic modifications. Furthermore, the dysregulation of amino acid metabolism also impacts tumor microenvironment and tumor immunity. Amino acids can act as signaling molecules that modulate immune cell function and immune tolerance within the tumor microenvironment, reshaping the anti-tumor immune response and promoting immune evasion by cancer cells. Moreover, amino acid metabolism can …

Distributing The Ursinus Food Forest Harvest: Considering The Lenape And Questions Of Equity, Elwood Harney
Environment and Sustainability Summer Fellows
Food forests are regenerative agricultural systems designed to support people and wildlife, with Indigenous knowledge and practices often guiding their stewardship. The Ursinus College Food Forest (UCFF) at the Whittaker Environmental Research Station is one such system. As a relatively young “living-learning laboratory”, the UCFF serves to connect student stewards, other students from the College, community visitors, and the Lenape people to many food and material-producing plants. The UCFF also functions to strengthen the College’s reconciliation with the Lenape people, upon whose unceded ancestral land our campus and the site are situated. Honoring Ursinus’s commitment to the Welcome Home Project, …

Introduction: Metallic luster dusts are decorative agents for cakes and other confections. While some powders are labeled “non-edible,” they are also marketed as “non-toxic.” We present a case of a child who developed acute metal pneumonitis after accidental aspiration of metallic luster dust. Case Report: A four-year-old presented to the emergency department (ED) in respiratory distress after attempting to ingest gold decorative metallic luster dust. In the ED she was placed on supplemental oxygen. Her initial chest radiograph (CXR) was unremarkable. Her condition worsened despite high-flow nasal cannula oxygen, and she was intubated. A repeat CXR revealed patchy perihilar and …

Psychology Faculty Research
Purpose
Researchers have theorized that interactions between appetitive and circadian disruptions result in increased eating disorder (ED) symptoms and insomnia. However, it is unclear how specific insomnia symptoms present among people with EDs and if the latent structure of insomnia in this population is similar to that of people with insomnia disorder.
Methods
We conducted a secondary analysis of data collected on ED and insomnia symptoms using a subset of students with probable EDs at a large Midwestern American university. Item response theory (IRT) for polytomous items was performed to identify item difficulty, discrimination, and information parameters for the Insomnia …

Supporting 3rd Grade Reading Proficiency: Utilizing Paraprofessionals To Provide Literacy Intervention, Hayley Jacobs
Masters Projects
Being able to read on grade level by third grade is a standard across the United States for public school systems. With the current educational climate enduring a teacher shortage, the ability to provide consistent reading intervention is affected. Paraprofessionals are increasingly being hired to support these gaps, but are not provided with the necessary resources and professional development to employ quality reading intervention. This project will provide the framework of a professional development schedule with necessary resources for paraprofessionals to refer to and expectations for paraprofessionals and administrators when implementing it.

Methadone maintenance treatment for opioid dependent mothers is standard of care. Infants of methadone maintained opioid dependent (MMOD) mothers have better outcomes compared to infants of opioid dependent mothers without treatment. However, when compared to non-exposed infants, infants of MMOD mothers are associated with worse outcomes. We conducted a pilot study to examine genome wide differential DNA methylation using cord blood samples from sixteen term and near-term infants of MMOD and opioid naïve mothers, excluding Infants with chorioamnionitis. A total of 152 differentially methylated loci were identified at a difference > + 2, < - 2 and p-value < 0.05. There were 90 hypermethylated loci (59 annotated genes) and 62 hypomethylated loci (38 annotated genes) observed. The hypermethylated and hypomethylated DNA changes involved multiple genes, pathways and networks that may explain some of the changes seen in infants of MMOD mothers. Top hypermethylated and hypomethylated genes involved areas of cell growth, neurodevelopment, vision and xenobiotic metabolism functions. Our data may explain the role of key pathways and genes relevant to neonatal outcomes seen from methadone exposure in pregnancy. Functional studies on the identified pathways and genes could lead to improved understanding of the mechanisms and identify areas for intervention.

Recruitment of research participants often has not obtained a desired sample size, thereby becoming a major problem inhibiting investigators' ability to adequately test the specified hypotheses. Social marketing with its four Ps, originally developed by the business world to sell products and adapted for public health initiatives, is proposed as a dynamic comprehensive conceptual framework to apply marketing principles and practices to enhance participant recruitment. Applying a social marketing approach to research recruitment would require initial investigation to understand the motivations of the target audience in regard to research participation, and continued research throughout the main project to adapt the …
Intermittent Fasting As An Adjuvant To Standard Drug Therapy For Drug Resistant Epilepsy, Jake Smiech
Intermittent Fasting As An Adjuvant To Standard Drug Therapy For Drug Resistant Epilepsy, Jake Smiech
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Epilepsy affects about 70 million people worldwide, making it the world’s second most common neurological disease. The first line treatment for epilepsy are anti-seizure medications, but only two-thirds of patients respond to the first two medications given. We propose a randomized controlled study utilizing intermittent fasting as a therapeutic lifestyle modification as an adjuvant to standard drug therapy for those that experience drug-resistant epilepsy. We will assess the efficacy and safety of intermittent fasting for a period of six months, and statistically determine if there is a significant reduction in the mean frequency of seizures participants experience compared to a …
Utility Of Serum Uromodulin In Predicting Kidney Injury In Acute Decompensated Heart Failure, Isabel Bautista
Utility Of Serum Uromodulin In Predicting Kidney Injury In Acute Decompensated Heart Failure, Isabel Bautista
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Heart failure is widespread and associated with high mortality and healthcare costs. Patients hospitalized with acute decompensated heart failure are at risk for developing kidney injury, a high-risk complication known as cardiorenal syndrome. Elevated uromodulin has reno-protective effects and is associated with a lower risk of kidney dysfunction. Compelling evidence suggests that elevations in uromodulin levels may help improve clinical outcomes among other kidney disease populations yet, it has not been explored in patients with heart failure. This study aims to investigate the relationship between baseline serum uromodulin levels and risk of incident acute kidney injury among acute decompensated heart …
Cardiovascular Versus Resistance Training In Lgbtq+ Adolescents With Overweight Or Obesity, Cordelia Cluett
Cardiovascular Versus Resistance Training In Lgbtq+ Adolescents With Overweight Or Obesity, Cordelia Cluett
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Obesity prevalence in the U.S. is predicted to reach 50% by 2030, accompanied by negative health consequences. At-risk populations, including LGBTQ+ youth, are disproportionately afflicted by obesity. Exercise is known to help improve obesity and reduce associated comorbidities; however, the research community lacks consensus on the best type of exercise for reducing obesity parameters. We seek to determine whether aerobic training or resistance training results in a greater reduction of adiposity within an adolescent LGBTQ+ population. Our randomized control trial will compare mean change in waist circumference and body fat percentage after a yearlong resistance training intervention compared to an …
